I agree that Leonidas seems to be an unusual name. As an adult my ancestor
dropped the Leonidas and went by John Bowden Polk. As far as tying into the
General's line I can't find any information that would lead me in that direction.
Surely someone out there has a Clay family that lived in Madison Co., Tennessee
about the time Martha got married and could help me.

Lots of discussion recently about the different Clay families. My John
Jake Clay was supposedly born in North Carolina. I find him first in the
1850 Washington County, Tenn, census records. He is a blacksmith and is
married ( Abigale Padgett) and no children. By 1857 they are in McDowell
County, NC where he dies in July 1860. I have no leads as to his family
background. Does he fit in with any of the lines you all are researching.
Thanks for any help. Lois

>From Prodigy in 1993: 'I have it from two correspondants that the
Martha who married William Mitchell Clay was Martha Ann Lewis, d/o
William Lewis.' No proof is offered but this may give someone a
starting point.
Martha Green married Charles Clay, younger brother of William Mitchell.
Her sister Lucy married another brother Henry and Martha and Lucy's
uncle, William Green, married Amey Clay, sister of Charles, Wm. M. and
Henry. Martha and Lucy were the daughters of Thomas and Elizabeth
(Marston) Green. This Green line goes back to Thomas 'Seagull' Green.

William Mitchell Clay was married 3 times but no mention to Martha Green,
His wives were
Martha Ann Lewis
Agnes ?
Martha Runyan
Martha Green was married to Rev. Charles Green
Darrell Hucks
Fran,
You are right. Rev. John was son of John. My mistake. Too early in the morning
and had just got off from work. Looked at my book wrong.

William Mitchell Clay married Martha Runyan
Henry Clay II married Lucy Green
Amey Clay married William Green
Charles Clay married Martha Green
William Mitchell, Henry II, Amey and Charles Clay were sisters and brothers,
all children of Henry Clay and Mary Mitchell.
Lucy and Martha Green were sisters and daughters of Thomas Green and Elizabeth
Marstone and William Green was the son Thomas Green and Martha Filmer and
brother to Thomas Green who married who married Elizabeth Marstone. Confused
yet?

Happy Thanksgiving all! If someone could help me out with this line I
would truly have something to be thankful for. <GRIN>
I have a Martha Jane Clay born abt 1826 in Tennessee. She married
Ezekiel W. Polk on 23 June 1840 in Madison Co., Tennessee. They had
five children:
1. Martha A. Polk born abt 1826 in Tennessee
2. James Knox Polk (not the president) born abt 1844 in Tennessee,
died 26 May 1865 in Mobile, Alabama.
3. George A.W. Dallas Polk born abt 1848 in Tennessee, died 1 Nov
1863.
4. Leonidas John Bowden Polk born 29 June 1851 in Tennessee, died 30
May 1924 in Riverside, California.
5. Lecius Lafayette Polk born 28 Dec 1855 in Tennessee.
Ezekiel died 7 Sept 1858 in Jefferson Co., Illinois. Martha married
Joseph Duncan on 23 Dec 1860 in Centralia, Marion, Illinois. They had
one child, Ella Jane Duncan. Joseph deserted Martha Jane. In the late
1880's her sons, John Bowden and Lucius sent for Martha and Ella and
they came by train to Avoca, Benton Co., Arkansas. Martha died there on
4 August 1896.
Who are Martha's parents? Family folklore has it that her husband
Ezekiel was a cousin to President Polk but that has yet to be proved.
Was Martha related to the famous orator? Did she have any siblings.
Why did they move to Illinois? I have not been able to find this family
anywhere on the 1850 census.
Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. I am stuck on
this line.

(The information for William "Mitchell" CLAY's Wives is not known at the
present - only that she was a Martha. This information comes from Robert Clay,
Archivist at the LVA in Richmond. Tim Spradling)

One more bit of information that may help one of you help me. The CLAY
sisters are Hannah and Jane or Janey. Hannah was married to John Tyre
and in 1783 they may have been living in Henry County Va. which, part
of Henry county, became Franklin county.
Does this ring a bell with anyone?
Many thanks,
Judi
Sorry - I misspoke earlier. John Claye's wife's maiden name MAY have
been FRAME and if so she was the daughter of John Frame. No proof
exists, just educated guesses. John Frame had a daughter, Elizabeth,
and they were close friends and neighbors of John Claye.

Darrell, I also have Mitchell Jr in my lineage, from his son Charles L who
married Ora Stewart. Could you E-mail me your family group sheet and I'll
send you mine thanks.

There is a book on the Alabama Clay's which is primarily on Clement Clay
and his family. I'm not sure of the title. Ran across it in the libary
and thought I had hit pay dirt on my AL Clay's.
Ned:
The Burrell et al research was apparently published privately. What I
have is a typewritten copy - whether a Xerox copy of the original or
retyped I don't know. It was on legal size paper which plays royal heck
with my filing system so cut it up and had a Xerox made on 8 1/2 x 11.
I can try to scan it into my computer and forward it to you. It may
take several messages to get it all over as my carrier hates long
messages! The last time I tried this little stunt everything went
wrong. I think it's called 'read the instruction manuel, stupid.'
I've seen some research that refutes Sir John Claye's kinship to John
Claye. I was making a statement on the lack of one name in all those
generations! :) Guess I should have said from Adline back to John
Claye and wife Elizabeth.
Here's how it goes:
John Claye m Elizabeth Innes?
Charles Clay m Hannah Wilson
Henry Clay m Mary Mitchell
Henry Clay m Lucy Green
Samuel Green Clay m Martha Wall
Samuel Mitchell Clay m ?
Martha Adline Clay m Thomas Redus
Octavia Clay Redus m John Pitt Grigsby
Thomas Redus Grigsby m Cora Legg
Mary Elizabeth Grigsby m George Angelo Cunningham
Mary Anne Cunningham m Winfield Lawrence Rick

Hello--I am a lurker of long standing. Time to get busy, finally.
Does anyone have any information of the Benjamin Clay family of Niles Ohio in
the early part of this century?
My great aunt Melissa Skeen married Benjamin Clay and moved from Dassel,
Minnesota TO Niles, Ohio. My great grandfather Thomas Skeen went to visit
them in approximately 1916, or thereabouts. One day he laid down to take a
nap and never awoke. We do not have any other information. I have been unable
to obtain any death records from Ohio. Did they bury him there in Niles? Did
they transport him back to Dassel? .
Are there any descendents of Melissa and Benjamin Clay out there? I hope to
make contact.
Thank you all.
