Several messages back, I just responded to someone who posted a query on the
list about a John Clay, b. in Frederick Maryland, who went to Summit/Seneca
Counties in Ohio and who lived there about the same period of time as my
Clay/Klee ancestors resided there. Perhaps there is some connection between
Adam Klee of Frederick, Maryland and this John Clay????

The Seneca/Summit County Clays you are referring to are from my line. They
descended from John Nicholas Klee and Lisa Margaretha Staudt, who came from
Germany and who settled in Bern Tp, Berks County, PA.
There was an Isaac Clay who lived in Summit County about the same period of
time as my ancestors were there. Several years ago, I wrote researchers who
claimed descent from some of these people. I remember contacting a
descendant of the Isaac Clay in Summit County. The man wrote me back,
explaining that his Isaac was of English origin, not German. So I know there
was an English line of Clays in the area at the same time as my German
Clay/Klees.

FIrst: Thanks for getting this list back!
Second, in my humble opinion on the Clay Family line: Everyone older than
John the Immigrant is suspect. I've seen many claims over the years, but
never any documentation. As for Mary Rogers Clay, she is honest &
generally reliable, but made some mistakes.

Good to hear from you. Look forward to more info if you have it.
Yes, this is the one. Nancy Jane CLAY m. James Nathaniel HARDIN
in Wayne Co TN. They were both very young. They had two sons
(1) William Franklin HARDIN, my lost soul...I've looked for him
for twelve years with no luck
and
(2) Lewis Albert HARDIN, my grandfather
before James Nathaniel, who was called "the stoutest man in Wayne Co.," went
off to fight for the Union in the
Civil War. He died nine days after returning home of measles sequelae.
He is buried in Wayne Co TN with his parents, Lewis Hardin and Margaret
Harper Hardin.
Nancy Jane got a pension.
When Nancy Jane Clay Hardin was 27 she married Steve BEDFORD, who had
been her
uncle by marriage. His first wife, Nancy Jane's aunt, was named, I think,
Mariah Clay. Steve Bedford and Mariah Clay Bedford had several children.
Steve was in his early 50's when he and Nancy Jane married. They had
his kids, her kids and they then had a family of their own.
They farmed in Wayne Co. Nancy Jane Clay Hardin's first son was
listed on the census as a farm laborer. Family story is that he
left as soon as possible and "went to Texas."
Her second son, Lewis Albert, my grandfather, went to law school
at Valparaiso University, returned to Wayne Co. and was elected to
a ten year term as county judge. He moved his family to OK when
it was still Indian Territory.....my mother, his daughter, is the
oldest living grad of Shawnee OK High School.
Because of the difference in their ages, Steve Bedford died before
Nancy Jane Clay Hardin Bedford
did.
She lived with one of her children after Steve's death.
A daughter.
After Steve died, she began getting the pension resulting from her
first husband, James
Nathaniel's death in the Civil War, and she continued to get it until
she died in 1917.
I am trying to trace HER line back....and perhaps find my long lost
great uncle.

Robert CLAY 1688-1716 immigrated from England to Philadelphia. Does anyone
have this person's genealogy? I don't have a connection to this person, but
am drawing at straws.
Looking for the lineage of Adam Clay, who lived in Frederick Co., MD in the
late 1700s and early 1800s. Listed on 1800 Census. He supposedly took flax
or flax seed to Philadelphia to sell. Had a daughter Susannah b. 1768
approximately.

Thanks for getting this group going again! This is my CLAY line. There is
all sorts of confusion on the first two generations shown here. Does anybody
have any of these names in their lines. The 3rd - 7th generation are
documented and known to the immediate family. Any help would be appreciated.
If you find any of this wrong, please let me know. PLEASE! Also, any
direction to reference material or places to go for reference as I may be
getting a trip to the KY area this summer.
Specifically looking for Generation No. 1 and 2 information and connection.

<bigger>Here's some news that will be of interest to both Weisiger
Family researchers and Clay Family researchers. And if anyone is, like
me, descended from both families, well, you can double your pleasure.
On the Weisiger Web site maintained by Dick Weisiger
(url: http://dickw.uscf.edu ) I learned that:
Joseph Weisiger, MD, 2/20/1794 - 9/14/1873 married as his third wife
Isabella Reed Clay 9/13/1809 - 3/16/1852. They married on 7/13/1837.
This Joseph was the son of Captain Daniel Weisiger (d. 1829) and his
wife Lucy Price, early settlers of Frankfort, KY. Joseph is said to
have been the first white male child born in that city ("A Corner in
Celebrities" by Alice Elizabeth Trabue).
But who was this Isabella Clay? She was the daughter of W.J. Reed and
Margaret Rogers, Dick's Web page records.
And her Clay connection? According to "The Clay Family" by Mary Clay
Rogers, Isabella was the second wife of Sidney Payne Clay (1800-1834).
Sidney was the brother of Cassius Marcellus Clay (1810-1903), the
renowned abolitionist, politician, diplomat, and roughneck known as the
Lion of White Hall. The marriage of Isabella and Sidney is confirmed by
the booklet, "White Hall Kentucky State Shrine," by David C. Greene.
Green lists their children as:
Sidney R.G. Clay
Isabella Edwards Clay (1830-1832)
Elias Davidson Clay (1831-1851)
Green Clay m. Lizzie M. Goodman
Neither Rogers nor Greene mention a second marriage of Isabella -- and
Greene indicates that she was buried beside Sidney Clay at his estate,
"Escondida."
However, she apparently did re-marry and bore Joseph Weisiger:
Reed Nelson Weisiger (1838-1908)
Samuel Price Weisiger (1839-1909)
Robert Weisiger (1841-1866)
As an added bonus, Mary Clay Rogers gives a little more data on
Margaret Rogers:
She died 8/18/1835 and was the daughter of John & Sarah (Daughtery)
Rogers.
John Rogers was the son of William Rogers and Margaret Caldwell.
Margaret was the daughter of John Caldwell and Margaret Philips.
Apparently, these people were Scotch-Irish.
Caveat: I've seen actual documentation for none of the above, so make
of it what you will.

Hi Mary Jo...
I don't know whether to send this directly to you or to the list so
others might see it too...so I'll choose the list.
I have Nancy Jane in my BEDFORD information...I even have a drawing of

She was the daughter of: Albert Gallatin CLAY and Sarah "Sally" Allen.
Is this the right one? Don't have time to copy the info now but will
later this afternoon.

Virginia as listed below:

Charles CLAY (b.1638) m. Hannah Wilson
Henry CLAY (b.1672) m. Mary Mitchell
Henry CLAY m. Lucy Green
Dr. Henry CLAY (b. 1736) m. Rachel Povall
Mattie CLAY b. 1772 m. Littleberry BEDFORD
I am going to Paris KY, Bourbon Cty. at the end of June to try to find
the CLAY family cemetary...does anyone have any information about this?
Its on Escondida Rd. south of Paris....I have maps but not a specific
place yet? Anyone been there? I also have a list of who is buried
there....

Thanks for reviving the CLAY list!!!
I have an Adam CLAY in Frederick Co., MD in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
He was supposedly the father of Susannah CLAY. Susannah was born approx.
1768. Susannah married Edward STEWART.
A family history which is supposed to have been from Susannah CLAYs
granddaughter said that Adam CLAY was related to Henry CLAY, the famous
statesman. It said that Edward STEWART was chums with Henry CLAY and would
visit him when Henry was visiting in Adam CLAYs home.
I have also found a biographical sketch on a Grafton CLAY from Frederick Co.,
MD that said they were related to Henry Clay, the statesman.
I am trying to determine if this is all wishful thinking or if there is
someone with documentation showing the relationship.
Does anyone have information of CLAYs in Frederick Co., MD during this time?
Thanks.

It should have said I only found my Clay line a couple of months ago so NO
claim that all information below is verified. Sorry for the mistake.
Thank you Angela and Christy for your notes. Christy, I descend from
Martha, a daughter of William Thaxton & Lucy Green Clay. And Angela to
respond to your suggestion that posting a descendancy of Virginia Clay's
would be useful even though your line is different - here's my start through
the generation for William Thaxton & Lucy Green Clay - I had to limit it to
these six generations due to size.
I've more generations in my direct line that I will post. Any corrections,

Thanks.
