The Claxton's are part of my brother-in-law's family. I don't show any of these folks in his tree, but they are likely related. I have a couple of suggestions: First, question whether Julia was really born in Ireland. The 1880 census says so, but the 1860, 1870 & 1910 censuses all say she was born in NY. Further, the 1910 census does not indicate any immigration or naturalization data for her, confirming (at least for that census) that she was US-born.
Second, see the website www.fultonhistory.com. It's a strange website with a strange name for what you can find there, but it's the contents that count. It contains boatloads of old newspapers from NY state, mostly from central NY which is where the Claxtons settled. I did a quick search & several references to Richard Claxton appear. Once a page comes up (they load slowly), search the page for Claxton to get to the exact spot where the name appears. If nothing else, all the gossipy little bits in these local newspapers give a great idea of how people lived.
Good luck!

I just began doing research on my family and traced my family to Sarah Claxton b. 1858. She was the daughter of Richard and Julia Claxton. The 1880 and 1910 censuses state they lived in Oswego county. I know Richard was born in New York State and Julia was born in Ireland. I'm trying to find out when Julia came over from Ireland and more about their lives in New York as farmers. I would appreciate any information you may have come across that relates to this family.
