I'm descended from the "old James" Clarkson/Claxton from Claiborne County. I can tell something about him. He is first found in Russell Co., Va. about 1795. He married Sarah Cook, the daughter of Joel Cook who lived on the Clinch River in Russell County. By about 1800, they had moved down to the area where Claiborne County (now Hancock) borders with Lee County, Va. They lived on 4 Mile Creek there were it empties into the Powell River. This is on the extreme northern part of the county, about as far away from Grainger as you can get in this county. He died in 1814 in the War of 1812. I have found no evidence that he was realted to any other Clarkson/Claxton people in the area - but of course that doesn't mean that he wasn't. It's only though DNA testing what we know which of our Clarkson families fall into which group, and of course, without a male line to test, we can't determine whether Mary was from the "Old James" line or not. Sad, I know. Ironically, I'm also!
an Estes. I do know who this John Estes is, but it's irrelevant relative to discovering the history of Mary.
There is a small Clarkson research group trying to piece together these early Tn families. If you'll write me offlist, I'll give you the e-mail address of the primary researcher. Maybe the two of you can exchange info. He's amazing when it comes to looking at allied lines and figuring out connections.

Looking to connect with anyone researching Claxton/Clackston/Clarkson in Greene, Grainger or Jefferson counties in Tennessee.
My Mary Clackston married Josiah Kidwell in Greene County in 1795. In 1800, Josiah Kidwell was bondsman for the marriage of Anny Clackston and David Evans. After Josiah's death, Mary Clackston Kidwell married John Estes. Mary was widowed again in 1840, and she is enumerated on the Grainger county census on the same page as a James Clackson.
Other marriages of interest in surrounding counties include Jenny Claxton to Jesse Doggett, 17 February 1803 Jefferson County, Tennessee; and Sarah Claxton to John Archey, 16 January 1806, Grainger County, Tennessee.
I think it's worth noting that Claiborne county where "old" James Claxton lived was created from Grainger county.
Trying to find the parents of Mary Clackston Kidwell Estes.

Hi, Karen. Unfortunately, I've found nothing further on Mary Claxton/Clackston/Clarkson in the past five years. After Mary's first husband (Josiah Kidwell) died, she remarried to widower John Estes. He died in 1840, and Mary is on the 1840 census in Grainger County, Tennessee on the same page as a James Clarkson. I've not been able to determine if James and Mary were related, or how they might relate to Ann Claxton Evans. It appears all three of them just dropped into Grainger county as full-grown adults, as none of the Claxton (all spellings) families in Tennessee had them in earlier enumerations. I still have my fingers crossed that one of these days we'll find their parents.
