Hi Mary Ann,
Thanks for your lengthy response and for explaining. Your help is appreciated !
You stated, ". . . the fact that there are two males MISSING from Solomon in 1840 and two males ADDITIONAL in the Hobby household . . "
But, I am wondering where is the evidence that 2 males are "missing" from Solomon's household in 1840? Neither Wilson nor Alexander appeared in ANY household in 1830 because they were born after 1830. Absent a Bible record or baptism records or a marriage record for Solomon to Alexander Hobby's daughter, there does not appear to be sufficient evidence to conclude that Wilson & Alexander were sons of Solomon merely because Solomon lived next door to their grandfather, Alexander Hobby, especially where there are other Claxton families in the area and their alleged older brother James was not mentioned in Hobby's will.
There are 5 other Claxton households in Bedford Co in 1830. Lincoln county TN was created from Bedford Co TN so these families lived reasonably close to each other. Have all the people in the 1830 census who appear in the Bedford county Claxton households been accounted for? Perhaps Alexander Hobby's daughter was married to one of those other Claxtons?
Also, James C Claxton would have also been the son of Alexander Hobby's daughter because James was older than Wilson & Alexander and James would not therefore be the son of alleged 2nd wife Clarissa Lisenby. Nevertheless, James is not mentioned in Alexander's will -- the explanation being that James received his inheritance before the death of Alexander. However, usually a will stated that a legal heir had already received a share of the estate before the death of the testator. This prevented the omitted heir from challenging the will for failure to receive a fair share.
It is also mentioned that an older daughter stayed with father Solomon along with James C after the presumed death of wife Unknown Hobby. I am assuming that the older daughter is the female who appears in Solomon's household in 1840 age 10-15? If the female age 10-15 is the a daughter of Solomon, why doesn't she appear in Solomon's household in 1830 when she would be 1 to 5?
It's well known that families often raised each other's children after the death of a parent or during the time after a parent died and before the surviving spouse remarried, and this is likely the explanation for the presence and/or absence of children in certain households during census years. But it sure makes it difficult to attach children to biological parents!
All kinds of situations arose on the frontier. Even Daniel Boone's wife had a daughter by his brother. Daniel was gone for almost 2 years on one of his 'long hunts' (usually only a few months) during which he was captured by Indians. Assuming Daniel was dead, wife Rebecca did not marry, but did have a relationship with Daniels brother. When Daniel reappeared, his wife had a young daughter of an age that Daniel could not have been the father. Although he knew the child was his brother's biological child, Daniel raised her as his own.
Anyway, I am not saying that Wilson and Alexander were not the sons of Solomon Claxton, but it seems that more evidence is needed before it is concluded that they are his sons. It's too bad the courthouse burned and we don't have records or that a family Bible hasn't turned up. I love a mystery but it's frustrating not to be able to solve it!
I knew the daughter-in-law of James C. Claxton and I wish I'd known about this mystery before she died ! She is the one who told me that "C" stands for Campbell -the middle name of Solomon's son, James Campbell Claxton. She did not, however, mention Solomon or Clarissa so she may not have known who were the parents of James C. Claxton.
If there is more evidence that Wilson and Alexander are the sons of Solomon, please pass it on to me and I will do the same if I run across anything. OK?
Hopefully, someone out there knows more about these people or has an old deed or probate record or family Bible.
Thanks again!
Sarah

First, James C. is not mentioned in Alexander Hobby's will. A possible reason for this is that he may have gotten his inheritance from Hobby when he married, or just the fact that Wilson and Alexander lived with the Hobby family and were closer to them than James C. Also not mentioned in the will are the daughters (one born 1832-1835 and Frances C. born ca. 1837) who are probably children of Clarissa Lisenby and thus not grandchildren of Alexander Hobby.
As for Wilson and Alexander in the 1840 census, they are not in Solomon's household, but if you look at Alexander Hobby's household there are two males listed who are the right age to be Wilson and Alexander; they are not there in the 1830 census. We think that the two young boys went to live with their grandparents when their mother died, with James C. staying on the farm to help his father and the older daughter staying to take over the household duties; in the 1850 census Wilson CLAITON (Claxton) is living next door to Alexander Hobby and Alexander C. Claxton is living 3 households away from Alexander Hobby (and without seeing the route the census taker took, that could put them across the road from each other, but certainly very close).
We believe that these facts are strong evidence of familial relationship:
(1) that Solomon Claxton is living next to Alexander Hobby in 1830 in Lincoln County, TN
(2) that the two grandsons are apparently living in the Hobby household in 1840 and close to the Hobby household in 1850
(3) that Wilson and Alexander Claxton are mentioned as grandsons in the Hobby will
(4) the naming of one child Alexander (not a common name in the Claxton families prior to this).
We have not found wills for Wilson or Alexander C. Claxton.
I think the question to ask is SINCE Alexander Hobby mentioned his grandsons Wilson and Alexander C. Claxton in his will, who could their Claxton father be? The fact that Solomon Claxton and Alexander Hobby are next door to each other in 1830 and the fact that there are two males MISSING from Solomon in 1840 and two males ADDITIONAL in the Hobby household would make it fair to conclude that Solomon was married to Alexander Hobby's daughter, that the daughter died and the young children went to live with her parents while the older children stayed with Solomon to help with the farm and household.
Mary Ann

Hi,
Does anyone have any info about the likely location of the cemeteries or family burial grounds where the following are buried?
SOLOMON CLAXTON b. abt. 1800 and died between 1870 & 1880 most likely in Bedford Co., TN.
His wife, CLARISSA (LISENBY)CLAXTON who was b. abt. 1805 and died after 1880 most likely in Bedford Co., TN.
Their daughter FRANCES CLAXTON b. abt. 1832 and died sometime after 1880 most likely in Bedford Co. TN. She is in her 40s, single, and living with her mother in 1880 and I don't know if she ever married or not. Does anyone know whether she married or when she died and where she is buried?
Their son JAMES C CLAXTON, b. abt. 1828 and died between 1885 and 1900 probably in Bedford Co., TN.
The 2 wives of James C. Claxton:
NANCY (SMITH) CLAXTON b. in 1832 and died between 1868 and 1870 in Bedford Co., TN.
SARAH ANN (COOPER) CLAXTON b. Nov 1842 and died after 1900 in Bedford Co., TN
Any and all help is greatly appreciated !
Sarah

Hi. Thanks for the link. I have a couple of questions tho.
I'm curious about where the info comes from that Solomon Claxton was married to "Unknown Hobby" before he married Clarissa Lisenby. Is it from the will of Alexander Hobby? This is the 1st I've seen about a marriage to anyone other than Clarissa Lisenby or any connection between Solomon Claxton & Alexander Hobby.
Does anyone have a TRANSCRIPTION of the will of Alexander Hobby or a CITATION to PROBATE records in Marshall Co TN?
The website implies that Solomon's 1st wife, Unk. Hobby, was the mother of James C. Claxton who is older than both Wilson & Alexander. Correct?
Was James C. mentioned in the will of his alleged grandfather, Alexander Hobby?
What I cannot reconcile is -- how can Wilson Claxton, b. abt 1830 and Alexander Claxton b. 1832 be the sons of Solomon Claxton when they do not appear with him in the 1840 census? Each son would be young enough to still be at home in 1840 but there are no males in the household of the correct ages to be Wilson or Alexander.
Does anyone have an explanation for this?
There does not appear to be sufficient evidence that either Wilson Claxton or Alexander C. Claxton are the sons of Solomon Claxton. What am I missing? Is there additional evidence -- church records, marriage records, wills, etc. that establish a link between Wilson, Alexander and Solomon or James C. Claxton?
Did either Wilson or Alexander C. leave wills?
Thanks for all your help!
Sarah

I have fairly well documented that the James (Temperance)of MO was the son of John Claxton who was the son of James Claxton of Granville County, NC and later Sumner County, TN. Mary Claxton who married William Ohomoundro was a brother to John and Dau. of the James of Grandville.

David,
I am a Claxton researcher. Currently we believe that your Mary Claxton Omohundro is the daughter of James Claxton of 1756 Granville Co., NC. We believe her siblings to be John Rebecca, Joshua and James. John basically lived in Bedford and Giles County, Rebecca married Shaver and lived Sumner County, TN and then AK. Joshua lived in Sumner County and Dickson County, TN. James lived in Sumner, Weakley, Gibson, and Fayette Counties in TN.
We have not been able to document a connection of this family to the William and Mary Ann Claxton.
