I am a cousin of Mrs. Granville Vaughan and do have a lot of the same
Claxton information. My father was a grandson to the James A you are discussing.
Kay Claxton Summers
The name that comes to my mind is Mrs. Granville Vaughn of MO, but I could be
confused.

That James A. Claxton may be the one who is a brother to Hiram Madison
Claxton. I have a family group sheet here somewhere regarding the James A.
Claxton who married Elsworth Nelson.
Carolyn
How interesting. Thank you.

This was found in Bluegrass Roots, Summer 1998, page 61. This is not my line, but I hope this helps someone. There is more info that I am transcribing, but I am giving enough to identify the family. Gloria Kay Inman, who follows this list, is the submitter, so contact her for further info.
In the article, she says that she believes this family was a Clark but changed the name to Clarkson/Clarkston. The parents of the two brothers are not known due to the confusion, but it is known that the father was born in Tn and the mother in Va.
Samuel Clark/Clarkston/Clarkson b 1811-12 in Va died 1881-82 in Leslie Co., Ky married abt 1831 to Nancy Jane Reynolds who was born in 1815 in NC. They resided in Clay, Harlan and Perry Counties in Ky, and Leslie which was formed from Perry in 1878 where they both died.
John Clark/Clarkston/Clarkson b 1808 in Va married Sally "Sarah" McKinney about 1828-29 and the first 5 children were born in Va. The rest were born in Harlan Co., Ky where the parents resided the rest of their lives.
She stated that a manuscript was in preparation of their descendants.

Found in the Watauga Assn. Vol 21#1 published in 1992.
Sharp Co.,Arkansas, affidavid as to family record. In the matter of the claim for pension of Elsworth Claxton as widow of James A. Claxton, Sgt. C 2nd Ark Vols.
Personally came before me, a JP, Mrs. Elsworth Claxton, the claimant whose age is 41 years and address is Polk Bayou, Sharp Co., Arkansas states that the following is a true copy of the names, dates of the children of the late James A. Claxton as the same appears in the Bible record in my posession and I believe the same to be correct and I know the same is correct as to her own children.
By first marriage:
Winifred Scott Claxton Oct 28 1852, living
Mary Ann Claxton Sept 2 1854, living
Eliza Francis Claxton Nov 14 1856, living
James William Claxton April 101859, living
John A. Claxton July 16, 1861, died Oct 24 1865
By second marriage:
Marion A. G. Claxton Dec 14 1866, died Dec 18 1869
Margaret Legendre Claxton Oct 22 1868, living
Charles Jordan Claxton Mar 17 1870, died Mar 22 1878
George Riley Claxton July 13 1873, d Sept 7 1876
Robert Henry Walton Claxton, Dec 14 1876, d Aug 15 1877
Caroll Phillips Claxton, Dec 18 1878, living
Melley Ellsworth Claxton, Oct 30 1881, living
Joseph Mordecai Claxton Feb 22 1884, living
Martha Medora Claxton Sept 2 1886, living
James A. Claxton and Elsworth Nelson were married Oct 5 1865. I was not married prior to my marriage to the said James A. Claxton. Signed Elsworth Claxton.
Affidavit:
In the matter of the pension claim of Elsworth Claxton, widow of James A. Claxton, personally came before me Mrs. Caroline Shirley aged 55 years and Mrs. Mary A. Gifford, aged 54 years whose post offices are Polk Bayou, Sharp Co., Arkansas.
Both of them knew the said James A. Claxtona nd his first sife Mrs. E.A.E. Claxton here in Arkansas before the Rebellion and that during the war we all had to leave our homes and move to Missouri for safety. We were present at the last sickness and death and burial ofthe said Mrs. Claxton at Rolle, Missouri on or about June 8 1863. Her husband was there as a soldier and was present at her death and burial. We have seen the family Bible records and know it to be correct as it corresponds with our recollection of the time of her death. We were neighbors her of James A. Claxton and his said first wife whose maiden name was E.A.E. Bass and also neighbors of him and his second wife, now his widow. We knew them all intimately. We know his first wife is dead, that he died March 27 1890 here at his home and that his second wife, now his widow, is living her with her children and that James A. Claxton never married again after hte death of the said wife until he married Elswort!
h Calxton. They further declare that they have no interest in the said case.
Marriage license issued in Fayette Co., Arkansas Oct 4 1865 and they were married Oct 5 1865.
This is not my line. I hope this info helps someone. If anyone knows about his ancestry and how it might tie back into the colonial states, in particular, Va. or NC, I would be very interested.

I recently visited the Washington Co., Va. genealogy society. They have a wonderful indexing system. I extracted all things Claxton that they had. Here is one of the entries.
This is a query.
Searching for any relatives of John? Barnabas "Barney" Waggoner d Feb 1808 St. Clair Co., Ill, lived in SW Va, NW NC, Sullivan and Hawkins Co., but moved to St. Clair Co., Ill by April 1 1807. He lived in the Holston area 1781-1807, first on the headwaters of Beach creek and the waters of the Holston River and second on the waters of Reedy Creek, both sides, a north branch of the Holston river. Married Dorothea "Dolley" unknown. Children are listed buy the one of interest to us is Daniel b circa 1798 who married Frankey Claxton in Illinois.
Does anyone know where this Claxton family came from? Did they also come from the Holston area? Who were her parents?
This is not my line (that I know of), and I don't have any more info.
