The following is from the Bedford County, TN Family History book, pp. 246-247. This history was supplied by Anne Mathews Hatcher.
To summarize a paragraph from the article, David Claxton made a statement to officials in Nashville, TN on Dec. 12, 1831 that he was "raised in Smith and Bedford counties, that he had six brothers and one sister, as well as his mother and father, living in Bedford County, TN." This statement can be found in the TN State Library and Archives. The article then continues:
"Without this document it would be impossible to establish the relationship of men named Claxton living in Bedford County, TN before 1850. This statement leads to the conclusion that John Claxton of the 1812 tax list, the 1830 census and the 1836 tax list (owned 59 acres) is the father of David Claxton, his six brothers, and one sister.
"Other sons of John Claxton must be James and John Jr. Descendants of these men remained in Bedford County and called each other cousin. Isaac Claxton is also likely a son; he lived in Giles County and is mentioned regarding the estate of John Claxton. Other Claxtons on the Bedford County census of 1830 and or the 1836 tax list include Jonathan H. (or T. or F.), Wesley, Jeremiah and Solomon.
"John Claxton is not on the 1840 census and in May 1843 Thomas S. Parsons, as administrator of John Claxton, deceased, of Giles County, TN, filed a lawsuit (Chancery Court Records of Bedford County, TN by Tim and Helen Marsh). The sister mentioned by David Claxton may have been the wife of Thomas Parsons.
"Summarizing the various records, we have John Claxton (b. 1770/1775), had children born in Virginia, Tennessee and possibly North Carolina; was in Bedford County not later than 1812. He married, say 1792/1796, wife's name unknown (Isaac and John Jr. each named a first daughter Sophia), but still lliviing in 1831, and he died 1836/1840 in Bedford or Giles County, TN."
There follows a paragraph on Isaac and family and two on David and family and then the following:
"John Claxton Jr. was born Jan. 12, 1804 Tennessee and died Aug. 10, 1869, Bedford County, TN. John and his wife, Sallie, had one son and two daughters by 1830 when he is enumerated as John Claxton Jr. By 1840 the census listing indicates that the wife and son are gone and he is left with three daughters. IN 1850 John is living in the household of Arthur Doulton, age 81 (b. North Carolina) and has Elizabeth E. Claxton, age 18, with him.
"John Claxton Jr. apparently married again after 1850. Cannon Claxton is in the 1880 census of Bedford County living with Granville Tucker, listed as borther-in-law. The death certificate of Cannon Claxton, informant Marlin Stephens, with whom he was living at the time, gives his parents as Jno. Claxton, born in Bedford County and Margaret Oakny, birthplace not known. The list of the children of John Claxton Jr. seems to be: Sophie Jane Claxton (b. 1825, d. 1872) md. Jonathan Holden; John Kimbro Claxton (b. 1829, d. 1830); Matilda Claxton (b. 1827, d. 1886) md. Granville T. Tucker; Elizabeth E. Claxton (b. abt. 1832); and Cannon L. Claxton (b. 1850, d. 1920). Matilda Frances Holden, daughter of Sophie Jane and Jonathan, married Elijah Andrew Jackson Mathews."
So this gives you the parents of Matilda Claxton and puts you right in the middle of "The Bedford County Claxton Mystery." There are several Claxtons in Bedford County, all about the right age - close to the age of your John - to be related, but with two courthouse fires, the records are gone. We are currently engaged in a DNA project, trying to get descendants of the various Claxton lines from Bedford County to participate and see if we can discern relationships or at least find how many different families we are looking at.
Hope this is what you were looking for.

Hello Amanda,
My Leonard George Claxton had two brothers, Percy and Harry so I don't think there is any connection.
I am aware of another Leonard George Claxton but he is no connection with my line. His wife's name was Muriel and he had two daughters whoes names I don't know. He was born in Wells, Norfolk, on 31 August 1910 and died 12 June 2001 in Tittleshall, Norfolk.
Regards
Andy

Hi Andy
I dont know whether you can help me - I am researching my maternal line and I appear to have a Great Uncle Leonard Claxton. I dont know much about him, except his siblings were called Dorothy, Edie and Reginald. I dont suppose that they are related to your Leonard?
