As the DNA project surname administrator, I am trying to find references to earlier Clarkson/Clarkston/Claxton families in the records. It seems to be that we are all stuck in the 1800s, early or late, and if we can find some folks working on these earlier lines, and perhaps DNA project participants, we will be able to connect ourselves together.
Therefore over the next few days/weeks, I am going to be posting things I find. I would ask anyone else who has early records in the Tennessee/Kentucky feeder states to please post them too.
John – 1647 – York Co. Va
John – 1680 – Barbados
David – 1699, 1702, 1704, 1717 – New Kent Co., Va. – associated with Butts family
His son John b 1710
His dau Frances d 1710
Peter’s wife Johanna died Feb 1711/12 – New Kent
David Jr’s dau christened – 1715 –New Kent
David marries Elizabeth Jackson 1715 – New Kent
William – 1716 – Lancaster Co.
Robert – 1719 – New Kent
Elizabeth died 1719 – New Kent
David died 1720- New Kent
Elizabeth died 1710 – 2 days after David – New Kent
Dick born to Susannah 1726 – New Kent
John – 1726 – New Kent
James – 1728 – New Kent
Note – Julius Clarkson seems to be related to this Butts family as the name Butts resurrects in the Julius Clarkson descendants.
Julius if found in Louisa and Albemarle Co. Va and then migrated to Bourbon Co Ky. We find he and other Clarksons, including another David, in Bourbon Co. before 1800.
This information was extracted from a much larger and more robust article at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~greenwolf/clarkson/ky-clarksons.htm.

Betty,
Welcome to The Great Bedford Co., TN Claxton Mystery. There are many of us who trace our Claxton lines back to Bedford Co., but none are really able to trace them out of Bedford Co. back to where they came from. There is a THEORY that David is the son of John Claxton, Sr. (but we don't know anything more about John) and a brother of James Claxton who married Temperance Ratliffe (Rackley) and moved to Wright Co., MO. Looking at the DNA evidence for a descendant of David and a descendant of James, however, leaves us with questions. You can see that comparison at Betty,
Welcome to The Great Bedford Co., TN Claxton Mystery. There are many of us who trace our Claxton lines back to Bedford County, but we can't seem to get them back beyond Bedford - they all stop there since the records have been destroyed in courthouse fires. There is a THEORY that David is a son of John Claxton, Sr., but we can't get John back to his state of origin either. If he is a son of John, he may also be a brother of James Claxton who married Temperance Ratliffe (Rackley) and moved to Wright Co., MO - but the DNA evidence of a descendant of James and a descendant of David doesn't seem to support this theory; we are still working on the DNA interpretation. You can see the results at the following site:

I will be glad to share with you what information I have on David if you are interested. Contact me at my e-mail as indicated on this message.

I've received a couple of messages since I posted about my own Clarkson/Claxton family line a few days ago asking about the status of the Clarkson/Claxton/Clarkston DNA surname project. I wanted to give a brief update and encourage anyone who would like to test to do so.
Today we received two gift certificates to pay for part of the test for male y-line testing and one for a female's mtdna test. If you are interested, contact me about this and I will explain.
Now for the update. So far, we seem to be falling into 4 mail groups. These are shown on the web page
http://home.att.net/~bokay1/index.html with a description of the groups and a short pedigree, but it hasn’t been updated recently, so it’s not completely current. (My fault, not the web mistress.) We have two more results back that are not shown, one if for a descendant of Thomas Clarkson of Sampson Co. NC in the early 1800s, and a couple more results whose owners need to provide genealogical information. Just two days ago, a new participant from the James Lee Clarkson line from Hancock Co., Tn. joined. (To me this is the best Christmas present I could ever receive. Not only did he join, but we had a wonderful visit on the phone. I love meeting my genealogy cousins.)
So if you don't know who you connect to, consider testing. If you represent a line that is proven a ways back in time, consider testing so others can connect. Besides, it's fun to see where your ancestors were from.
One real success story we've had is when that the results of the Thomas Clarkston of Lee Co., Va. descendant matched a line who tested who represented an earlier line in Virginia. The Thomas line had been genealogically stuck for many years. You might remember this is the line we believe may be descended from George Middleton Clarkson who was hung in the state of Franklin. Well, the line they connected back to does in fact have the Middleton name in the line. Now this isn't proof, but it certainly gives this line the opportunity to now work down the line from Va. to try to get to the State of Franklin. The time gap between the lines isn't great - and this information is far more than we would ever have gotten without DNA testing. For details, see the web page.
As for the families whose names were consistently spelled Claxton, so far, we only find them descended from the Bedford Co. Tn. group - but they had to come from somplace. If you are a Claxton and from a family someplace in Virginia or NC or someplace on the Eastern seaboard, feeder states for Tennessee in 1812 where we first find our Claxtons, please consider testing so we can tie our family together in a nice Christmas bow:)

Johnson Claxton married Emma Jane Shipley on 12 December 1841 in Boone Co, Missouri. It is possible that this was his second marriage. There was an earlier marriage of a Johnson Claxton to an Ann Garney (or Gurney) about 1829 in England. I'm not sure when Johnson left England or where Ann died. I'm also findiing it difficult to find Johnson in the census records although he may have only been in the US between cesus: arriving after the 1840 and moving on before the 1850 one.
There was at least one child born to Johnson and Ann: Frederick Moses born about 1833. Frederick Moses died in Victoria Australia in 1888 aged 55. Moses married Elizabeth Dalton in 1854 in Victoria, Australia and they had 2 children (at least): Frederick Johnson b. 1856, d. 1856 aged 10 months; and Frederick William b. 1860.
Has anyone any information about Johnson and any children he produced?

For those of you interested in this saga, I have finally found t least circumstantial evidence linking the familys of Thomas Clarkston of Lee Co. Va. (b circa 1787) and James Clarkson (also spelled Claxton) of Claiborne/Hancock Co. Tn. b circa 1775. While this may not sound like much, I have hunted for nearly 3 decades for anything at all.
Thomas Clarkston had 2 sons of interest for this discussion, David Clarkston and James R. Clarkston. We find both of these men in Claiborne County records associated with the Yeary family, once in 1839 and once is 1842 as follows:
Nov. 1839 - Amount of rents of the lands of Serelda King and Henry C King, heirs of John W. King decd for the year 1839 sold to the highest bidder on Nov 1 1839, Viz, To Henry Yeary, corn, oats and sugar, to James R. Clarkston 105 doz oats $13.18.75 and James R. Clarkston by private contract in rent $4.00 - Henry Yeary guardian. (Note - this James R. Clarkston is from Lee County and is the son of Thomas Clarkston and Nellie Feathers. He married Margaret Yeary. Yeary’s are neighbors of James Clarkson of Claiborne, specifically, Henry Yeary. Is this a coincidence?)
1842 - page 249 - Settlement with Henry Yeary guardian to Serilda and Henry C. King minor heirs of John W. King decd up to January 4 1842, paid Jos. R. Claxton for making rails and repairing fence - $13.44.
There are also deeds that involve these men:
1833 - David Clarkson to Gray Garrett, 1833, I-532, for $242.
1835 - David J. Clarkson to J.M. Brabson, 1835, K-473 - for $416
1833 - David Clarkson to Gray Garrett, 1833, K-45 for $1.00
1833 - David J. Clarkson, 1833, K-80, for 1.00
1834 - David C. Clarkson to Hugh Graham, 1834, K-363, for $83.00
1834 - David C. Clarkson to Hugh Graham 1834, K 367 for $1.00
James Clarkson of Claiborne/Hancock does not have sons named David nor James M.
Further research shows that David Clarkson married Margaret Yeary. I found info on the Yeary family and they came to the Powell River Valley very early. I cannot specifically connect Henry to Margaret, but he would appear to be either a brother or an uncle. I think putting James R. Clarkson next door to our James would certainly be evidence to connect the two Clarkson familys.
While this may not yet be much, it's more than we've had in 30 years. If anyone can piece this Yeary family together and connect these two men, please let me know.
We have evidence that the Thomas Clarkston line connects back to England, using DNA testing to connect lines. We don't have a male Clarkson participant for the James line out of Claiborne/Hancock Co., but if we could find one, we could put this question to rest forever. If you are a male Clarkson from this line, please, please consider participating. There would be no cost to you and we would all be able to know for sure if we connect to this line.
