With the advent of pretty spring weather or pretty autumn weather, depending on which hemisphere you're located, lots of family reunions are bound to be taking place in the upcoming months. I'd encourage you to post info about
such functions related to the Claxton surname. One thing to remember, however, is that you may not refer to any costs or price of attending. Let us know where, when, and any activities that may be planned, and then give us an
e-mail address for more information, or if there is a website set up for the reunion, include the URL so we can find out more, plan to attend and meet up with long-lost cousins and share information!
I do not research this family, but needed some information because this James
is frequently confused with James Claxton (1798-1871) of Bedford Co, TN and
Wright Co, MO. The following information was sent to me by the Claiborne Co,
TN list.
James M. CLARKSON. Born abt 1775 in VA Before 1830 Came To Powell River, TN.
James M. died in Ft. Decatur on 20 Feb 1815; he was 40. Education: From P.G.
Fulkerson's Papers.
Some information from "Reflections" historical society for Claiborne Co., TN
Some information from Service Record & Pension files of the National Archives.
James Clarkson was born ca 1775 - 1780, if he was about the same age as
his wife Sarah, who was age 75 in 1850. According to a deposition she made
for a bounty land warrant her name before her marriage was Sarah Cook. They
were married in 1799 ( she later made a deposition in her eighties saying she was
married in October of 1805) in Russell County, Virginia by John Tate, a
justice of the peace. The earlier date seems to be the most likely as Fairwix
Clarkson, her oldest son, says in the census that he was born in 1800 in
Virginia. By 1804 the family was living in what is now Hancock County, Tennessee.
In a deposition filed by Sarah Clarkson, she states that James Clarkson
served as a private in the war with Great Britain declared by the United
States on the 18th of June, 1812 for a term of six months. She further declares
that James died at Fort Decature on or about the 20th of February 1815 due to
illness. The files show that he died on the 11th of February, 1815 ( death
witnessed by Tandy Welch and Foster Jones ). Sarah filed for and received, in
1816, a widow’s allowance of $4.00 per month, a soldier’s half pay, to
continue for a period of 5 years.
In the 1850’s Congress passed several acts benefiting military survivors
and widows. An act passed on September 28, 1850 provided for the granting of
bounty land warrants. It was during this period that Sarah Clarkson obtained
a grant of 40 acres. She filed a deposition in March of 1854, however,
claiming she was entitled to 80 acres. The 40 acre grant was canceled ( a copy of
the canceled certificate is in the pension file) and the 80 acre grant
approved. Sarah also received a widows pension of $3.50 per month, however, under
the Act of Congress of February 4, 1862 her pension was suspended due to the war
with the Confederate States of America. As Tennessee was in the Confederacy
all pensions payments in the state were stopped.
After the war had ended, Fairwix Clarkson applied for a restoration and
arrears of payment on September 25, 1866. He filed as the administrator of
the estate of Sarah Clarkson, who had died on December 21, 1863, at his home
on the Jonesville Road.
On March 14, 1868, another deposition attested to the loyalty of Sarah
Clarkson
and her heirs to wit : Fairwix Clarkson, of Hancock County, Mahala Hurst,
of Claiborne County, Polly Welch of Hancock County, Patsy Parks, of Claiborne
County, Rebecca Collingsworth , of Union County, Sukey Parks, who removed to
Iowa some twenty years ago, the children of Henry Clarkson , who died some
twenty years ago; named Edward H. and Flora A. Clarkson. and the heirs of
Elizabeth Plank, who died some twenty years ago. Rebecca Collingsworth is
reported to be disloyal, but that can not be proven from personal
knowledge. Fairwix was required to take an oath of loyalty, even though he
had three sons who served in the Union Army.
James and Sarah ( Cook ) Clarkson had the following children :
Fairwix, born ca. 1800, died February 11, 1874, married Agnes Muncy, born
1800, died after 1880.
Mahala, born December 7, 1801 married Andrew Hurst ( died 1830 ).
Elizabeth, born ca 1800 - 1810, died ca. 1840 - 50, married John Plank, born
1801
Mary Polly , born 1804, died June 22, 1887, married Tandy Welch, born 1793
(Virginia), died November 24, 1864 ( Hancock County, Tennessee ).
Susanna, born October 11, 1808, died May 22, 1895, married Levi Parks in
1824.
Rebecca, born ca. 1810, married John Collingsworth, born 1810.
Martha Patsy, born October 10, 1811, died December 23, 1898, married Jacob
J. Parks.
Henry Clarkson, born ca. 1813 - 1815, died August 1838, married Martha Patsy
Walker, born 1816.
Research: James lived with his family on the Powell River near the Alanthus
Hill community in present-day Hancock Co., TN.
Military: James was a soldier in the War of 1812. He was in the Co.
commanded by John Brock, 4th Regiment of the E. TN Militia. He served as a private

On 10 Oct 1799 when James M. was 24, he married Sarah Hitson Cook, daughter
of Alexander HITSON & Mackey ROYAL, in Russell Co., VA. Sarah died on 21 Dec
1863; she was 88. Born abt 1775. Education: From P.G. Fulkerson's Papers.
Some information from "Reflections" historical society for Claiborne Co., TN
Medical: Sarah filed and received a pension in 1816 which was a widow's
allowance of $4.00 per month, a soldier's half pay, to continue for a period of 5
yrs.
Research: Sarah, as a widow, received a granting of bounty land warrant for
40 acres. She refiled a depositon in March of 1854 claimning she was entitled
to 80 acres. The 40 acres grant was canceled and the 80 acres grant approved.

Message Board Post:
I am searching for the parents of James Claxton (Clarkson, Clarkston) of Claiborne County Tennessee, born about 1775, died in 1815 in Alabama during the war of 1812. He married Sarah Cook, daughter of Joel Cook in 1799 in Russell Co Va.
Who were his parents? Where did he come from? The Claiborne families swear the spelling was Claxton, but I've seen it also as Clarkson and Clarkston, but mostly as Claxton.
At one time, James was believed to be the son of George Middleton Clarkson, but that is now believed to be incorrect.
I know nothing more of Sarah than what is above.
James and Sarah's children were:
Fairwick who married Agnes Muncy
Mahala who married Andrew Hurst
Elizabeth who married John Plank
Susannah who married Levi Parks
Rebecca who married John Collingsworth
Martha who married Jacob J. Parks
Mary Polly who was born in 1795 and we know nothing about
Any help on this family is greatly appreciated.

I am a gg granddaughter of Sarah Ann Claxton, daughter of John Claxton and Mary Hudson Claxton. The grandson Peter Claxton listed in this family is the son of Sarah Ann Claxton and her lover William Pendleton. She had a daughter Mattie Pendleton in 1884 with William after they were married in 1883 in Rockcastle Co, KY. I am looking for any information about William Pendleton if you or any of your Claxton correspondants knows anything about him. He was believed to have immigrated from Berlin, GER, born abt. 1840. Peter Claxton did not take the surname of his father because he was actually raised by his grandparents since both parents died while he was still very young.
