Carolyn, It seems we may be talking about different Jeremiah Claxtons. I'm pretty sure my Jeremiah was in Illinois by 1838. The will book record about Jeremiah Clackson and Ellen Clackson looks interesting. If I had a date for that which matches Jeremiah's age it would look a lot more interesting. Perhaps I will try to order it from the County.
I have ordered more marriage records for Jeremiah Claxton from the Illinois archives. I hope they will clear up confusion about Jeremiah's father's name.

Montgomery County, TN Will Book D, p 531-532. Samuel H. Clary takes Jeremiah Clackson, son of Ellen Clackson, aged nine years, as an apprentice farmer (I don't seem to have a date with this).
Marshall County, TN Marriage Records: Jeremiah Claxton and Emaline Donal, license issued Feb 7, 1844 (I think this should be 1846), married Feb 12, 1846 by W. Hunter, Justice of the Peace
Jeremiah Claxton is listed in the 1836 tax list of Bedford Co, TN, district 17, which is Farmington, TN. This district went to Marshall County when it was formed later in 1836.
Camp Ground Cemetery, near Farmington: Mary, wife of Jeremiah Claxton, Oct 5, 1805 - Oct 6, 1836.

Carolyn, Can you elaborate on your earlier message you said "There is a record in Montgomery Co, TN where Ellen's son Jeremiah is bound out." What do you mean by that? Can you e-mail me a copy of the record you refer to or tell me how to get it?
You also said "Then there is a Jeremiah Claxton in Marshall Co, TN, around Farmington, on the Bedford Co, TN border."
Do you have dates for these events?
The Jeremiah Claxton I am looking for was born in Tennessee about 1816. I have a marriage record from Williamson County, Illinois (his 5th marriage!) where he lists his place of birth as "Tenn" His father's name is listed simply as "William Boyt" although it might say "William Bayt" it is hard to read. He definitely lists his mother's name as "Ellen Sanders" Jeremiah Claxton shows up in 1850 and 1860 census records in Illinois and in Illinois Civil war records. He always lists his place of birth as Tennessee and the birthplace of both of his parents as Tennessee. On the civil war muster roll, he lists place of birth as Robertson County, Tennessee. He may have had a brother, as the family he heads on the 1860 census show up again on the 1870 census headed by a "James Claxton" with an age about 2 years older than what Jeremiah would have been at that time. I'm wondering how Jeremiah got the Claxton surname if his father was named William Boyt?
