Hello, sorry I can't help you. How a message with my email got posted to Quartermouse i have no idea. I have no family with that name at all in my family line or my husbands. But happy hunting and hope you find your fam. Cheryl
Danny, saw your post on the Claxton query --
My husband is the grandson of Daisy Jewel Claxton (Rackley). She was a
daughter of Charlie and Mollie. Would love to hear from you. Have some
information but you may already know it.

Hi Danny
My family name is Clarkson, but was Claxton in @1850. Prior to that, the
name was Claxon. So you see, tracing the family can be quite difficult. I
doubt that we are on the same family link, but if you can trace back to the
first immigrant, then you have a chance. Most Claxton's come from one of
three towns called Claxton in England.
The name means " Wise speaker", which comes from the Norse/ Viking settlers.
" Clacks Tun" Town of the speaker. The name is also interchangeable with
Clarkson.
I am an Englishman by birth, and we come from North of the Thames, in an
area called Thundersley, Basildon Hall, Wickam and Laindon. These towns are
all within a mile or two of one another.
If you have family names and birth dates, and they are from the area I
mentioned, we have a chance. There is also a womwan ( a relative) who is in
charge of the mailing list for "Claxton" in Essex England, but you must have
some names , dates and places.
Good luck
Rich

No this isn't the same book. Everything in this book has been documented one way or another. All the usual stuff needed. The rest of the stuff was filled in by descendants of each child of Hiram's. It only goes back to our first Claxton relative that we can ACTUALLY tie into. This is Hiram Madison Claxton that married Temperance Mathis daughter of Ford and Sarah Mathis. This book does have assumptions as to who Hiram's father is but there is no proof so we did not claim to have proof. Hiram never said anything in any records that we can find as to who his parents were. Hiram did have a brother James A. Claxton.

I was in Dowell's Chapel Cemetery, Jackson Co., outside of Tuckerman, Arkansas this afternoon looking for my Bowden ancestors. Buried right behind them is a row of Claxton's with other Claxton's scattered around. I am a decendant of James & Temperence Claxton but this group doesn't ring a bell. These are the tombstones I found:
Claxton, F.M. d. 7 Oct 1918
Claxton, Ruth A. b.4 Feb. 1847 d. 13 Mar 1912
Claxton, Helen b. 23 June 1911 d. 20 Oct 1911
Claxton, J.T. b. 10 Sept 1872 d. 1 June 1956
Claxton, Jessie b. 26 Feb 1881 d. 18 Aug 1956
Claxton, Mark 8 b.Oct 1907 d. 4 Jan 1950
Claxton, Pearl b. 18 April 1909 d. 23 Nov. 1909
Claxton, Thomas Homer b. 19 Dec 1900 d. 29 Jul 1905
Who are they and are the related to the James and Temperance Claxton of Wright Co., MO line of Claxton's or another line?
Cheryl, I looked and there were several Alices but could not connect to
your names. Why not drop Wanda a line. They have Claxton Reunions in
Broken Arrow, Ok. in June. She may have some info on the line you are
looking for. She hears from a lot of Claxtons. I am sorry I dont know
the Claxton lines well enough to help you. Barbara
Do you still have Wanda's book? I have been trying for years to trace down
an Alice Claxton
who lived in Tennessee. She had a son Micheal Everett Claxton (b:April 16,
1896) and a daughter
Ettie who married Vester McDaniels and last residence was in Toledo OH.
Alice later married,
and I haven't any idea who she married or what her married name was.
Claxton was her maiden
name and she never married my great-grandfather. Would you have anything at
all on Alice
Claxton in either Wanda's book or your husband's ancestors James and
Temperance?
Cheryl (claxton) Hudson

The book was done by Wanda Claxton Warehime 1520 East 19th Street
Tulsa Ok. the front of the book says to direct orders and correspondence
to her. My husband Bill got one of her books but it was not the line he
came from. He descended from James and Temperance Claxton who went to
Wright Co, Mo 1855. I am sorry to report Bill passed away with bone
cancer in Sept. We played the song Wabash Cannon Ball [Daddy Claxton[ at
his grave side. This song was written for my husbands gdpas 1st cousin
P. P. Claxton who became our 1st Education Sec under Pres Taft and
Wilson. Bill was researching this line for 20 years. Hope this helps
you. The book we think was written about a bro Hiram to our old James.

That is the question that I asked Roy Acuff. He did not answer directly. He
just said nobody knew who wrote the song. I also have searched the net, and
found an interview with June Carter Cash who says that the Wabash Cannon
Ball by Roy Acuff was originally an A.P.Carter song . She also is quoted as
saying that nobody knows who wrote the song. I have a tape of A.P. Carter's
recording of 1926, and it has the Claxton verse....clearly Claxton. Acuff's
version was popular in the 40's. Thelma
In 1984 I wrote to Roy Acuff, and asked him who "Daddy Claxton" was and who
wrote that verse. He answered me and said "Nobody knows who wrote the Wabash
Cannon Ball". His middle name is Claxton, but he did not comment on that to
me except to say that he was not related to the Claxtons. He said "many
people have asked me this question"......
In a letter from Billy Max Claxton he told me that he had also written to Roy
Acuff, but got no answer. He had asked specifically about the middle name.
He said that he got his answer one night from watching TV...He said that Roy
Acuff was being interveiwed and they asked about his middle name. He said he
was not related to the Claxtons.....that his father and P.P Claxton were
friends, and that his father admired P.P. so much that he was named for him.
P.P. Claxton was commissioner of Education under three presidents and
Provost at the U. of Alabama among other things, but he is most admired as
the father of public education in Tennessee.
Just for the record, Wabash Cannon Ball is a hobo song. "wabash" being a term
used for storing train cars very close together in train yards. Hoboes slept
in them and dreamed of travelling to far away places. Many verses are
memorials to hoboes who died while boarding moving trains. "The Wabash
Cannon Ball" is taking them to the places of their dreams.....Thelma Phillips

Thelma, thank you for the input. I think it was some of the older
cousins who visited in Tn, told Bill about the song. My son put Wabash
Cannonball in and searched for the song on my webtv. There are lots of
info there. When the Carters sang the song they have the name as
Cleaton. Wonder who and when the Claxton name was put in the song. We
enjoy it. The words on the site said the name was Claxton. When we
burried Bill you could hear a train going through the town in the
distance. We bought some Claxton chicken the other day came from Claxton
,Geo. Also the tv said something about Claxton fruitcakes for
Christmas. We tried them in years past and were very good. We even had
a Claxton gal from England stop to see us. Interesting. Bill would have
enjoyed this as he was pretty proud of his name. Barbara
John, I may be wrong on the song. Sons looked it up and said A.P.Carter
may have written it but always seemed to be Roy Acuff song. Acuffs
middle name was Claxton and he told Ralph Emory on tv that his Dad
admired Claxton who was great educator and this P.P.Claxton had a book
written about him. So I correct myself on the song.
What is this? Is this Larry C. @ the OCC?
