Hi all --
I am trying to trace the parents of Alice Sarah (sometimes Sarah A.)
SCHULTZ who mother was a CLAUSEN. Alice was my GGGma.
Alice Sarah SCHULTZ (b. 6 Aug 1860 North Carolina) m. Eli F. MAY (b.
Sep 1857, Rutledge, Grainger, TN) on 2 Apr 1875 Knox Co., TN. Knox Co.
is a neighboring county to Grainger. In the early years of their
marriage they lived in Grainger (in 1880 they appear on the census
with their two young children, James N. b. 1876 and my GGma Lucille
Sarah b. 1878).
According to her death certificate, Alice's parents were William
"SCHUPPE" (SCHULTZ is more likely correct as it is on Alice & Eli's
marriage license) and Callie CLAUSEN. According to several census
documents William was b. Germany and Callie b. North Carolina. The
only source for the names -- other than Alice & Eli's marriage license
-- is Alice's death certificate, so I'm not at all sure of these names
or of the CLAUSEN spelling. (The informant on Alice's death
certificate was one of her younger daughters, and the whole family had
moved around quite a lot through several states, so I'm not sure they
ever met).
Eli's parents were James G. MAYES (the MAYES family is a long-
entrenched Graigner Co., TN clan) and Martha McDANIEL (also old
Grainger family).
In 1870 Eli was living with his family in Grainger Co. and was
enumerated with them on the census. The neighboring family on the
census is that of "J CLOSSON" with his wife Christine and their
children John A., Francis, Hamilton, Virginnia, Sarah F., and Mantha
J. My research suggests that this is John CLAWSON who was the son of
Asa CLAWSON and Elizabeth HODGES of Watauga Co., NC. (I believe that
John and his family later moved to Arkansas.)
I thought that perhaps the Callie I was looking for would be a
relative of these CLAWSONs. It doesn't appear that any of Asa and
Elizabeth's 3 daughters married anyone named SCHULTZ. I'm still trying
to piece together descendants and other possible spouses for Polly and
Diana, but Charlotty m. John HOLMAN and they had several children both
older and younger than my Alice, so I've ruled out another possible
spouse as the link here. And, while I need a bit more to rule them out
absolutely, Polly and Diana don't look like good candidates. (I'm sure
their descendants might have names & birthdates of their children).
So it doesn't appear that Alice SCHULTZ was a first cousin of the
CLOSSON/CLAWSON family living next door. But there aren't a lot of
CLAWSONs in Grainger Co. and it's very rural -- so not a lot of
families coming and going. It's the type of place where the same 8 to
10 surnames show up over and over and over in every family -- and
CLAWSON isn't one of them.
Therefore, I feel that there's a very strong chance that there's some
connection of Alice and her mother Callie to the CLAWSONs of Watauga
Co., NC, but I have no idea what. Nor I am even sure that I'm looking
for a "Callie".
If anyone knows of a connection, knows of a CLAWSON who married a
SCHULTZ, or even has some good solid places to research the Watauga
Co. CLAWSONS, I'd appreciate the assistance! The John CLAWSON family
also lived in neighboring Jefferson Co., TN before moving to Grainger,
so there might be a connection there.
Thanks, and glad to meet all of you!

I believe John R. Clawson is my 3rd great grandfather through his daughter Rachel. I have also made contact with ancestors of daughter Lydia. I have yet verified what information I have obtained from other data bases. I do know that my Rachel married Samuel Hale and lived in Shelby Co Ohio. They had daughters they named, Lydia, Martha, Naomi, and a son Linus Virgil, besides others. Later Linus, went by Virgil. To many names match to be random. Would be interested on your views, and help verify these as fact.
