I don't know if will help or cause more confusion, but it is my belief that I come from the van Schouw line of Clawsons. I was puzzled about van Schouw becoming Clawson until I looked up New Amsterdam in Wikipedia and found that in the 1664-1674 era there were 3 Anglo-Dutch wars and at one time 4 British frigates arrived at New Amsterdam. After the British took over it may not have been wise to be so obviously Dutch, hence the name change.
Since you mentioned Josiah Clawson,
The following is from Rootsweb:
I agree that the Buckelew and van Barkelo/Barkuloo are not the same
family.
Some researchers have stated that William Buckelew was the father of
Peter Buckelew c:1644-1696 who married Annetje Fredericx. Annetje was
the daughter of Frederick Jansen and Grietje van Groningen. This
William Buckelew was supposed to be with a regiment from Scotland in
Amsterdam. This may account for his son Peter marrying a Dutch woman.
Peter Barteljoen (Buckelew) and Annetje fredericx had two children
baptized at the DRC in New York. Frederick was baptised in 1676 and
Annetje was baptised in 1678. Records also show that they had a son
named Peter and a daughter named Grietje (named after her grandmother
Grietje jans). They may have had a son named Francis who married Martha
and a daughter Mary who was supposed to be the wife of Francis Letts.
Records that I have, show that the Letts family and Buckelew family
were neighbors in New Jersey.
Four of the children of Frederick Buckelew the son of Frederick
Buckelew (1676-1754) married into the Clawson family. Margaret Buckelew
married Josiah Clawson, Rachel married Richard Clawson, Abraham married
Eliza Clawson and according the Frank Crosswhite, Mary Buckelew married
John Clawson. Mary and John Clawson had a son named Garret. Garret had
a son named Lott W. Clawson. When Frederick Buckelew died in 1776, the
inventory of his estate was taken by Richard Lott. Frank Crosswhite
believes that the first wife of Frederick Buckelew was a descendent of
the Lott family.
As you may know, Frank Crosswhite passed away on Dec. 12, 2008. In our
correspondence over the years, he sent me considerable research
material that he had done on the Clawson family, including information
concerning the van Schouw DNA studies.
Willem Klass/Clawson married Elsje Kroesen the daughter of Neeltje and
Garret Dircksen Kroesen. Neeltje Krosen was the daughter of Jan
Pietersen and Elsje. When Elsje was killed by Indians in 1651, Jan
Pietersen married Grietje Jans, the widow of Frederick Jansen in 1652.
Grietje and Frederick Jansen were the parents of Annetje fredericx who
married my relative Peter Buckelew. Annetje would be the half-sister of
Neeltje Kroesen.
Since I have considerable research material from Frank Crosswhite on
the Clawson and van Schouw lines that he sent directly to me, I do not
know what information he posted on Dutch Colonies.
Douglas C. Buckelew
