Confirmed my DNA match. My DNA only shows that 5 out of the 12 of the first group of markers match the VanSchouw line. This means that I am more closely related to over 1% of the population of India than I am to any of the paternal male lineage of the VanSchouw line.

Here is the latest I have on the Clawsons and will be updating this on my site at www.clawsonfamily.com. First I did confirm the records in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. A Josiah Clawson is listed for the 1763 tax records. In 1781, there is a listing for a widow Clawson along with Peter and Richard. From this, I deduce that Josiah has died. Arlene Rainelli sent me a lot of her information on the early Clawson in Huntingdon County.
As for us being related to the VanSchouw family and the Clawson lines that came from that, I can say that this has been proved to be not true. I submitted a DNA test to be compared with members who are from that line. To be in the same ancestral area (common ancestors within about 20 generations), you pretty much need to have a 12 out of 12 match. My comparison was 5 (or 7) out of 12 match with confirmed members from this line (Don't have this data handy). So we are not even remotely related unless you go way back.
This leads to my latest research. My DNA results point out that my ancestors (and the same for other Clawsons from the Josiah Clawson line) are from Russia, Latvia, Norway, Poland, and other countries including India and Pakistan. You need to read up on R1a1 Haplogroup to understand more of this. This probably means that our ancestors were part of the Viking migration.
If the Clawsons were from the Scotland, I am making a educated guess on their history there. They probably entered Scotland on one of the Viking expeditions to Scotland in the timeframe of 1000 to 1400 AD, give or take a few years. As you know, Closson is a variation in spelling for the Clawson name. In looking at some internet information, Closson in Scotland can be a variation of the name Clouston. The Clouston family has a well documented lineage in the Orkney Islands. The Orkney Islands were settled and controlled by the Norwegians until the 1400's where control was given to Scotland. Unfortunately at this time, it appears that noone from the Clouston line has submitted to DNA testing.

In a seventy-five year old article from the Filson Quarterly, the then Meade County (Kentucky) Historical Society indicated that they had identified eleven Revolutionary War veterans buried in Meade County (KY) and that they were taking care of the graves. One of the eleven was John Clawson. I have research interest in him, and I have his pension file (which indicated he had been from New Jersey and lived in Berkeley County, VIrginia) and an extract from his file that was included in those of he and other Meade County rev war vets that is on film at the Salt Lake library. I cannot find John Clawson in any Meade County cemetery records, and I was wondering if any researcher had tombstone information for him. I suspect it might be in an old transcription of cemeteries for Meade County that just isn't on file everywhere, and that other Clawsons might be buried in the same place. I'd appreciate any help or advice.
