Dave,
Thanks for the information on the family of Thomas and Sarah. It has convinced me that Sarah is indeed the daughter of Garrabrant and sister of Abraham. My ancestor was Sarah's brother Garret. I'm pretty sure Sarah was born in Virginia, unless her birth occured on some sort of visit back to NJ.
According to a DAR application from from Annie Irons, the wife of desecendant Schuyler Clawson, Garrabrant was born 16 May 1739 in Piscataway, NJ. I do not know if that is true one way or the other.
In the Tax Rolls of Berkeley Co, WV, in the late 1700's we find John Clawson and Brant Clawson.
This is most likely the Garabrant Clawson that appears in the land records there. On 24 Apr 1795, 195 acres on Back Creek is sold by Solomon Chalfin to Gerard Brant Clawson. 5 years later, on 10 Apr 1800, Garebrant Clawson and his wife Elenor sell this same tract to James Campbell.
We have a record of a Richard Clawson of Cranberry (Perth Amboy, NJ) who appears to be the Richard Clawson of Berkeley Co, who had a wife named Rachel. There is a Richard Clawson of Perth Amboy that married a Rachel Buckalew in Perth Amboy 5 Apr 1764. This Richard’s farm was sold at auction in Dec of 1764.
Mary Ellen Porter, a cousin who provided much of the Berkeley Co information, reports that this Brant died about 1810 in Fayette, Seneca Co, NY. His letters of adm. were granted to Eleanor Clawson in 1812. She also thinks he purchased 50 acres of land in Fayette, Seneca Co, in 1803. Sounds very reasonable since he apparently died there.
So he apparently removed from Berkeley Co to Fayette, NY between 1800 and 1803.
In 'The Berkeley Journal' which is put out by the Berkeley Co., WV Historical Society. Issue 24, 1998 p. 122 titled 'Campbellton' about a house which is still standing which was built by Revolutionary soldier James Campbell. It is located on Union Corner Rd. between Arden and Gerrardstown.
'Thomas Rothwell was the stone mason who built one of the large chimineys. He was paid (pound sign) 4/10.10 in November 1799 for his work. Lime for the mortar between the stones was made by William Dennison at the kiln. Garret Clawson and Thomas Russel were also stonemasons who helped build the stone house.'
Regarding Sarah's brother Abraham:
Birth: ca 1781 VA
Death: 1848 Ypsilanti, Washtenaw Co, MI
Abraham Clawson, born Shenandoah Valley, VA, moved to Seneca Co. NY, with his parents in his 19th year. He married Eleanor Brown, Sept 1, 1825. He came to Michigan and bought of the government 165 acres, section 25, Belleville, district of Detroit, now Wayne Co. The following year he returned and bought 200 acres adjoining the first. In 1827 he came again and purchased 80 acres, section 10, township of Ypsilanti. During these years he did not reside in MI. In the Spring of 1830 he brought his family- wife and five children. Sarah, m John Robison. They did not emigrate west until 1838. Magdalene and I l Easton, Mathias Easton and wife, Susan, and two younger sones, Thomas B and Abraham occupied a log home of two rooms until Aug 27, 1831, when he bought of ? Spencer 160 acres in section 3 and 110 acres on the plains east of Ypsilanti, where he moved his wife and youngest son, Thomas B having died 1831. No burying ground then and he is buried on his farm until death of Abraham !
in 1848. He was them removed to what is now called Spencer Burying Ground. From the
"History of Washtenaw County, Michigan", page 1198, Ypsilanti Township.

Regarding her brother Garret:
Birth: 15 Feb 1767 VA (1)
Death: 9 Jun 1841 Valois, NY (1,2)
Burial: Old Clawson Burying Ground, Hector Twp, NY (2)
>From the History of Tioga, Chemung, Tompkins and Schuyler Counties, NY:
Garret Clawson settled on the north town line and raised a large family of children, who are living mostly in Lodi. Many of the family are buried on the old homestead. The family came from Seneca Co, Lodi Township, NY, around 1799.
In a biography of his grandson, Dr Charles DeLand Clawson, we find:
"His birth occured in the town of Lodi, Seneca County, this state, May 17, 1838, his parents being Isaac A. and Abigail Neal Clawson. The father, a native of Virginia, was born in 1800 and when a young man removed to New York, settling in the town of Hector, Schuyler County, about 1820. He was a son of Garry Brant Clawson, a native of Holland, who on crossing the Atlantic took up his abode in Virginia, where he engaged in farming, and after his marriage he removed to Schuyler County, New York, in 1820. Here, he purchased a farm, upon which he lived until his death in 1842. In his family were six sons and one daughter, all of whom reached years of maturity, Isaac Clawson being the fourth in order of birth. When this country became for the second time engaged in hostilities with England Garry Brant Clawson entered the army as a soldier of the War of 1812. 3
How accurate is the information in the Biography? I can find no evidence so far of a Garrabrant Clawson serving in the war of 1812. Isaac was in fact born in 1802, and from the other census evidence we have know he was born in NY. Garret did settle on the north town line and he and others in the early family are buried on the old homestead, in the Old Clawson Burying Ground, before the Seneca Union Cemetery was created in North Hector. The earliest burial there was in 1824. We suspect that Garret moved to North Hector ca 1800, with the move from VA, with his father Garrabrant settling in Fayette at the same time. So neither account of the family appears to be entirely accurate. But this is all conjecture, and new information may change all that. As far as Garrabrant being a native of Holland and coming directly from there to VA, there is no evidence whatever for that.
Interesting note: In 1866, Garret B Clawson, while crossing a recently harvested field of several varieties of wheat grown together, observed among the stubble some uncommonly fine growing heads. Saving and sowing them, he grew 2 varieties. One of these was the Clawson, having red chaff, being beardless, free from rust, hardy, early to mature, and heavy to yield. In a fair test, side by side, of Diehl wheat and the Clawson, the advantage was evidentially with the latter. (4)
In the 1820 census records for Tompkins Co is listed the following heads of households:
Garrebrant Clawson
Garret Clawson
Jacob Clawson
Peter Clawson
In the 1830 census records for Tompkins Co is listed the following heads of households:
Garabrant Clawson
Gerit Clawson
Isaac Clawson
Jacob Clawson
John Clawson
Peter Clawson

Dear Bruce,
Thank you very much, I would be very grateful for any information you could provide about Garrabrant Clawson.
Sarah Clawson was born, according to the 1850 Fayette, Seneca, NY census, about 1784 in Virginia. In the 1860 census she 13 years older, putting her date of birth as about 1781, a little more likely, and her place of birth is New Jersey.

David,
Yes, I do have Sarah in my records. I'm pretty sure her father was Garrabrant Clawson, who was the surator at her wedding to Thomas Rothwell on 10 Oct 1797 in Berkeley Co. I have the same notation on Thomas and Brant being stonemasons together building a house for James Campbell. James Campbell also bought Garrabrant's land in Berkeley Co when he moved to Fayette in Seneca Co, NY. I did not know Sarah and/or Thomas Rothwell moved with Garrabrant to NY, and did not have any additional info on them. If you do have more on Sarah, I would love to know more. I have more on Garrabrant I can send you if you want it.

From the 1983 History of Fountain County, Indiana is the following section on
Bill Clawson, which mentions his son Archie, who married Della Potter:
"William "Bill" Clawson was the village blacksmith and worked in his shop
until he was ninety-five years old. His first blacksmith shop was located in
Rob Roy on the west side of the railroad track north of the grain elevator.
Later he built a shop on the east side of the railroad track on the Attica
Newtown road. His motto was 'it is far better to wear out than to rust out.'
He was always looking to the future, never the past. He was twenty years
ahead of time as a mechanical genius inventing the first demountable rim for
an automobile, one of the first acetylene welders in the country, made his
own oxygen and acetylene and was welding aluminum in the early 1900's. He
also invented a machine to make the wooden rim of a wagon wheel and he also
made one of the first steel mould boards for the horse-drawn plow.
He attended school in a log cabin located between Little and Big Shawnee
Creek in Old Rob Roy. He was a lifetime Democrat and the first time he voted
was for Grover Cleveland for president of the United States. His hobbies were
gardening in the summer and playing his banjo in the winter months. He taught
the blacksmith trade to his brother-in-law, Millard A. Watts and also his
youngest son, Charles Clawson. His son Archie, employed at Harrison Steel
castings for fifty years, married Della Potter. They had two children, Mary
Clawson Purviance and Archie Clawson Jr."

Joan,
Thanks for your reply. OK, lot of different topics to address. My experience with trading info with Clawson cousins has been the opposite. I have received a boxful of terrific documents such as wills, deeds, group sheets, Bible records, etc, from a number of different cousins. I started out much like you in trying to place a single person, in my case it was my GG grandfather John R Clawson. I was swimming in bits of data gleaned from the cemeteries and local records of Valois, Hector, and Seneca County. Lot of jigsaw puzzle pieces, but how did they all fit together? I made educated guesses on who belonged where based on age groups and burial locations. As I connected with more cousins with knowledge of their branch, huge chucks came together into focus. Probably about two thirds of my guesses were correct. Sometimes they just fooled me outright, like marrying his brother's widow. But now I have that Seneca Lake group pretty well figured out. As this group produced new crops !
of offspring, many of them picked up on moved on into the Mid-West. Since my clan did not, I have not turned my attention much on the 1800's migration families, which appears to be the bulk of the data you have accumulated. I have focused instead on going backwards into what is now Berkeley Co, West Virginia, where my clan stopped off for about 30-40 years after leaving Northeastern NJ. Some family groups stayed in that area, and there are still lot of Clawson's mentioned in the records there that I cannot place. My ancestor, Garrabrant Clawson, started out in NJ, and appears to be a son of Thomas Clawson, who was the son of William Clawson.
Now, you mentioned several things that got my attention. You said William came from Holland. Did you mean that literally? Perhaps you are thinking about the William Clawson born about 1750 in NJ that migrated to North Carolina. He had a son named Asa that had a daughter Susannah, born in 1819, but supposedly she died as an infant. This is internet data that I haven't checked at all, so I can't vouch for it.
My William Clawson's father was very likely Claus Cornelison van Schouw, who came from The Netherlands, but I'm "pretty" sure (there's that word again) William was born in Brooklyn about 1657. You also said many of his children were born in Holland. Again, tell me more. It's possible, but I had always assumed they were born in the "wilds" of NJ, when baptising them as they were born was not possible, and then, when a new church was established in the area, had the first group all baptised together.
But you want to place Mercy, and I totally understand. She may be part of a different Clawson family entirely. There was a whole other Clawson clan in Bucks Co, PA, that was not from my family line.
Some thoughts about finding Mercy. How did she spell her name? While not proof, those using Closson have never, o far as I have seen, been part of my line. Is it possible her name was Massey? John Clawson, my 5G Uncle, who settled in Berkeley Co, WV, married a woman named Massey (Marcie), perhaps Harris, some others say her surname was Marsh. I do not have info on a lot of John's grandchildren, but at least one of his sons, Isaac, had a daughter named Massey. I do not know her year of birth. I could easily see her or another descendant with the family name being called Mercy, and hiding from you because her birth record says Massey. If you want more info on John Clawson, I'll be glad to send it.

I am looking for information on a Mary J. Clawson born in Westmoreland Co. She married Samuel E. McAuley of Armstrong Co. One (or only) of her children was Catherine M. McAuley b: 9-10-1886.
Hi Joan,
My name is David Clawson and I am 36 years old. I am also trying
to research Clawson's is the same area of Ohio. I know that most of them were
settled in Morgan County mainly the McConnelsville area. I have me line back
to the Civil War but ran into some DEAD ends. I do this in the winter time or
in the summer if we have a bunch of rainy days. The one I am stuck on is a
John Clawson who married an Elizabeth Weimer/Weymer. I know that there is two
Clawson families still living in McConnelsville and Malta which is across the
Muskingum River. They say that there is no relation between the two families
which could be true but I'm not convinced. In your travels did you run across
any info on any of this families. I live in Ohio about 2 hr. north of Morgan
County. Any help you can be or if you need any lookups needed let me know and
when I get down there I will do what I can

Hello,
Does anyone know Sarah CLAWSON who was born abt. 1780 in Berkeley Co., VA (what is now Jefferson, Berkeley and Morgan Co.'s in West Virginia)?
She married a Thomas ROTHWELL abt. 1797 in Berkeley Co., VA and then moved to Fayette, Seneca County, NY about 1800.
A recent issue of the Berkeley Co. Historical Society's magazine had an article which indicated that Thomas Rothwell and Garret CLAWSON were stonemasons and worked on ' Campbellton ', a house built in 1799.
There may have been a Brant CLAWSON who fits into this picture.
Would surely appreciate any leads.
Thank you!
Yours truly,
David, on the central coast, California, USA

First... Hello,
I'm not being catty, but I have found very few Clawson's forthcoming. I can name about 5 researcher's that "walk the walk", and are very good researchers, but most take... and that's that. That's what drove me to take a month off and just go through Ohio, all along the mid to far western counties digging through dozens of old papers. I lost my voice twice because of the old paper mites and fell asleep twice in restaurants because of exhaustion. I had been working on Mercy Clawson/Closson/Clausen for years and seem to get no where. I had only one choice. I had to collect the Clawson's I could find and place them firmly in families. Those are the 1300+ that I have now. I am trying to nail down one woman. MERCY, BORN 1819, "Mother Of Foreign birth". This is my great grand-mother. All the other Clawson's I have are used for working through the process of elimination. I stopped collecting person's at the latter part of the century. The Josiah's that you see me talking about are l!
ose fits, as are Andrew, Frederick, Rachael, Mercy, and possibly one more that I can't think of at the present time. I am now concentrating on just these people and their possible parents. I don't take kindly to joining these people and saying, "Gee whiz, these must be a family." When I read, "I Think, could be, probably, seems like, etc.," I run like crazy and discount all material except to use as part of the investigation. I have William and Cornelious Clawson Wills and Smalley's, and the baptism's. I do not have anything about Williams sister Pieterje. Since William came from Holland to New Jersey and many of his children were born in Holland, I wasn't moved to going through that until I place MERCY. I'd be glad to share it all with you if you can help me with family information in Penn. Virginia (W.Va.) to Ohio. My worst nightmare is that Mercy was once married to a Clawson and then married James Kiggins. Her mother being "foreign" born sets my teeth on edge. She coul!
d be the Closson's that came into Ohio from Germany. It is possible she is daughter of Asa Clawson because he had a daughter born in 1819. I was so hoping for a Will with her name in it. No Soap. Thomas Clawson that left Caroline in JAMES KIGGINS care, not Mercy's did not mention her at all, and I placed him with his family. ...... It's to late for this now. It's almost 2:30 AM. I'm a tired old lady. Let me know how we can group some things.

Joan and Bonnie,
Several things popped out at me regarding your recent exchange on Josiah Clawson Sr and Jr. One was your statement Joan that you have 1300 Clawsons listed your data, and the detailed information you had on the two Josiah's. I have been researching the Clawson family for some years now as my "pet" project, and I have exchanged lots of information with various cousins who have been been very helpful. My group started out in New Jersey, and in answer to Bonnie's question about William Clawson and his children, I do have the dates of their baptism's, and info on them from William's will, if you still need that data. What struck me was your statement about Pieterje being William's sister. While I agree with you on that, that seems to be a controversal area, and I was hoping you would share with me your source of information or the background on your including William in the van Schouw family, assuming that was what you meant. And Joan, I would love to know more about the scope of!
your Clawson data, and how we might share information. I assume Josiah Jr and Sr were your ancestors. Do they trace back to William Clawson in NJ? My group started in NJ, went to West Virginia, and then to Hector, NY. There is some evidence they are descendants of William's son Thomas Clawson, but I'm not entirely sold on that yet.

Hi,
You mentioned having some Clawson marriage records;I am trying to trace the parentage of one Rosana Clawson ;Born circa 1800,who married in 1821in Carter County Tennesse,to George Willson.I have tried to substantiate that her family was from Va.,her father possibly being a William Clawson, formerly in the military.Do you show any Clawson intermarrying with anyone named Rosana? Possibly she was named after her mother.Any help would be appreciated. You can email me at abg418(a)aol.com Amy Goldman
