Josiah and Phoebe Woodward Clawson came to Henry County ca 1821 from
Preble County, Ohio. Their children A.J., Asa, and James were there,
among
others. James' son, John Mortimer Clawson, is the subject of a biography
in the
1884 Henry County history. Josiah and Phoebe's daughter Fidelia Clawson
married William Wayman in Henry Co. I'm doing Clawson research and would
be interested in anyone working on any of these families.

Jill,
I've done some research on the origins of the Clawson family in the
early Dutch settlements in NJ, and I "think" I know who her father was.
There is, however, not much that is proven. There is clear evidence that
there was a Jan Claesen that settled in Woodbridge, NJ, as early as
1671. There was also a Willian Claesen that settled in Piscataway, NJ,
who "appears" to be his brother. It makes sense that these two would
have been the sons of a Dutch immigrant names Nicholas, and the the
Claesen surname was a Dutch patronymic that became Clawson, as can be
seen in the records of the time. This Jan Claesen appears to have had a
son, since a Jan Claesen appears in the militia rolls of Woodbridge in
1715. That would be too late to be the first Jan Claesen, but fits the
one we see later as listed below:
Name: John CLAESEN
Birth: ca 1675
Death: ca 1744
Father: Jan CLAESEN (<1650-)
Research:
According to his will dated 1744, he was 69, his wife was Mary and he
had four daughters and one son, John, at that time.
Listed in the Milita Regiment of Col. Thomas Farmer in 1715 from
Woodbridge. 1
Listed in 1740 as a Freeholder in Woodbridge. Could be him or his son
John. The John Clawson listed as a Freeholder in Elizabethtown in 1750
and 1755 is probably his son. 1
Possible Martin family connection. Two of his daughters married Martin
brothers.
Spouse: Mary
Children
1 M: John CLAWSON
Birth: 22 Jan 1715 2
Death: 5 May 1781 Elizabeth, NJ
Spouse: Unknown
Marriage: ca 1735
2 F: Anna CLAESEN
Spouse: Nathaniel HARNED
Marriage: 24 Apr 1742 Woodbridge, Middlesex Co, NJ
3 F: Rachel CLAESEN
Spouse: Joseph MARTIN
4 F: Sankey CLAESEN
Birth: ca 1702 Woodbridge, NJ
Spouse: Eliakim MARTIN
5 F: Phebe CLAESEN

Jan's children were listed in his will. I haven't worked on that
material for some time, so I'm not sure offhand how I know that, meaning
whether I have a copy of that will, or if that was mentioned in
Monnette's book listed in the sources above.
I believe that this Jan, who had a son named Jan, who had a son named
Jan, all sometimes called John in the records, was my ancestor.
Just as a point of information, when you see the spelling Closson, it
"usually" refers to descendants of Stephen Closson of Stamford, CT, as
opposed to the Clawson line that originated in NJ. There also seem to be
other lines not related to either of these two as well.

Bruce

Cliff -- I got your e-mail on this Delilah and would like to contact whomever
on the McCain list posted it to try to tie it in. Given Garret Clawson
marrying Delilah Shroyer in the early 1800's, there are many Delilahs who are
descendants in this line, and I can't seem to fit this one in from my notes.
I'd like to try, but there's no contact. Do you have one?
