What I have is a list of names from a Bible page I believe. It was sent to
me by a descendant of Amos Smith, whose daughter Sarah, married Daniel Brewer
States. Daniel States' parents were Archibald States and Sarah Brewer.
Sarah was the daughter of Daniel Brewer and ?. Archibald States was the son
of Samuel States and probably Hannah Hanna (daughter of Archibald Hanna and
Margaret Brady) of Westmoreland, CO. PA. Samuel States and Daniel Brewer
were in Indiana Co., PA in 1816 when they were the appraisers of am estate of
Cornelius Clawson.
Samuel States is the son of Matthias States and Jane (we think Clawson).
Matthias died in Westmoreland Co., PA after January 8, 1817. We think
children of this marriage were Samuel, Matthias, Elizabeth and Catherine,
based on his will. There is a Mary States that might be a daughter or a
sister. We don't know but she signed witnessed the sale of land after his
demise. In the will his wife's name is spelled Jean, but later documents say
Jane.
We also wonder if Cornelius Clawson was married to one of Matthias daughters.
The Cornelius you have must be another one than ours as there wouldn't be an
estate settlement for him in 1816 so we are working on an earlier generation.
Interesting that you are dealing with a Matthias Clawson who supposedly was
married to Elizabeth States.
We have Matthias States, son of Adam and Elizabeth Geldener, with a sister
Elizabeth, born in 1754, but she married a Reynolds so not the same one, but
there were other States/Staats in both Huntingdon Co., PA and Bucks Co.,PA at
the time. Supposedly our Archibald was born in Hundington Co., PA or perhaps
they meant Huntingdon Co., or perhaps Huntington Township, Westmoreland Co.,
PA. I am inclined to believe in Westmoreland Co., as that is where Matthias
was and that would also be where he would meet Archibald Hanna's daughter.
There is a William States family in Huntingdon Co., PA at that time also.
Lots of questions.
There are no dates in this Bible page. I don't know if some are parents and
some are children.
I picked up the States information some 25 years ago, but didn't know about
the Clawson information and when I go back east this fall I will be stopping
there again and trying to find all Clawson deeds, etc., to hopefully
straighten some of this out.
I have tried to contact descendants of this Matthias States through the
Internet but I get no answers. We are working on Samuel States, but he has a
third wife with children Sarah and Elizabeth that seemed to also have
vanished off the face of the earth.
I don't know if Daniel Brewer was in Westmoreland Co., at all, but thought he
might have been before moving north with Samuel States family as we find
several families all seemed to have gone there. Perhaps they really didn't
move and the boundaries just changed. I haven't had time to follow this
either as chasing many lines at this time. I do know that Matthias States
land was in Fairfield Township.
I was told by the owners of Clossen Press that they thought my names belonged
with the Richard Clawson family (I think that is what they said). Anyway a
different branch than theirs and that there had been a book written about
him, but I haven't been to a big library to check it out since I was back
east in October.
I hope this helps. I am sending this to several county pages that are
involved and will be eager to hear from anyone who knows anything about these
people.
(Jane Clawson, Ruth Clawson, Catharine Clawson, Charles Clawson, Matthias
Clawson, William Clawson, Samuel Clawson, Cornelious Clawson - these on the
names on the list, no other information about them)
Thanks, Jerilyn

Hi I have in my possession some pages that were handed down from ancestors
and although I know there is a concoction, I am unable to find it out. All
the following names were found together along with other pages that had
listings of birth and death dates of families so I think they might have all
been siblings, but don't know. Possibly in Indiana Co., PA (Cornelius for

Does anyone have this group of Clawsons in their family.
Jane Clawson, Ruth Clawson, Catharine Clawson, Charles Clawson, Matthias
Clawson, William Clawson, Samuel Clawson & Cornelious Clawson. Would have
been late 1700's through mid 1800's I believe.
Thanks for any help you can give.

John,
I could use some of the information you have on Garret's descendants. My
Clawson's are from Shelby County, Illinois. My information ends with a James
Woodward Clawson who was married to Jane Larimer on 12 Jan. 1804, and their
son John Larimore Sr., which I have being born on 17 Aug. 1811 in Virginia.
Can you connect my Clawsons to your Garret Clawson?
Does anyone else have information about James Woodward Clawson and his
ancestry?
Thanks,
Karen Tout

Hi Clawson Listers - thought I'd add some of the CLAWSONs I have in my
line. William Frank Clawson b. about 1860 married Margaret Ellen (Ellen)
Stern by 1883. At least 2 children are known - Ralph (real name unknown)
& Nancy. There are 5 children listed in IGI records: William Henry b.
1884, Nancy Jane b. 1886, Cora Agnes b. 1887, Walter Herman b. 1889,
Vernie E. b. 1892. After Ellen died, W.F. Clawson married her sister -
Martha Jane (she had married a Wilt & was divorced). My g-mother was
Martha Jane & Joe Wilt's daughter. So her 1st cousins became her
half-siblings. (She called them "double-cousins")!! All children were
born in Hamilton County, Indiana. Any one with any connections - please
let me know.
I also know Ralph married & had a son - Robert Franklin.
Thanks,
Wendy

Hello All
On a recent trip to Indiana during a quick stop at Beulah cemetery one and one half miles east of Rob Roy in Shawnee Township, Fountain County, Indiana. I photographed the following stones. If anyone needs a copy of these photos , let me know at

Hello All, I have a copy of the book GREEN HILL and MEDINA TOWNSHIP of
Warren County, Indiana. by Vanda Wilson pub. 1986 . There are a lot of
CLAWSONs mentioned in the book. I would be glad to do lookups for anyone
in this book.

To: <CLAWSON-L(a)rootsweb.com>
I do know that my "Bunch" ancestors went to Preble & Darke Co Ohio
around
1800, before heading to Indiana. I still haven't found "Delilah Ann
Clawson" but she married a Bunch who resided in Jay Co, IN on 1850
census.
Candy Clawson Spence WENT to Jay Co (!) and found a record of Delilah's
marriage to Robert Charles Bunch...it was very strange. From what Candy
said, it sounds someone applied for a marriage license & probably
discovered
that they needed a witness since the bride was underage (which would
make
sense, as my family's records show she was born in 1841 and groom in
1826).
They weren't married on the date they applied for the license, they were
married some time later--and HER last name on the license was shown as
GARNER. I forgot to ask Candy if the application showed her as old
enough
to marry without a witness).
Do you have info on the Preble Co Clawsons speficically? As chances are
these two families may have known each other BEFORE moving to Jay Co.
Have
you run across any "Garners" in your research (Candy Clawson-Spence said
there was a Garner Clawson also-could he have been related to Delilah's
parents in Jay Co IN?) I know this is grasping at straws but I am STILL
looking.....and waiting for some OTHER Clawson descendant to get online
who
has all the missing pieces to this puzzle. While it is true that my
Bunch
ancestor could actually have married a "Garner," it seems unlikely as
two
different (earlier than me) descendants have shown her in their research
(and they were completely isolated from each other) as "Delilah Ann
Clawson."
Cliff -- Thanks for your note. Unfortunately, the place we're all stuck is
with Garret's ancestors. We don't have them and it's stumped researchers for
years. Candy Clawson Spence has come up with a recent theory, but there's
basically nothing. I do have a 384k document on Garret and his descendants
for three or four generations, but can't help you (yet!?) on the ancestors.
Good luck in your research and the work you do on the Clawson list.
John
John,
I am interested in seeing a couple generations of Garret's ancestors, if
you have that. I'm looking for the ancestors and family of Ann Clawson
(abt 1756 - aft 1810) who married James Morford. They were in Fayette
and then Mercer Counties near the end of the 18th and beginning of the
19th century.

I haven't seen activity on this Clawson list in quite awhile, so I thought I'd re-energize it with a query to connect with anyone doing work on related Clawsons. I've put together extensive text notes on the Clawsons who descend from Garret of Pennsylvania, who died there between 1777-1781 in the Greene/Fayette County area. Garret and his wife Mary had at least six children -- one, Garret Jr. remained in Fayette Co., and the other five -- Thomas, Josiah, John, Peter, and Mary (Shanks) -- went to frontier Ohio -- Montgomery and also Shelby and Preble Counties. Still other Clawsons went west to Fountain and Warren Counties in Indiana, although related branches were in Henry Co IN and Delaware IN. Intermarried pioneer names were Covalt, Buckles, Garrison, and Goodwine. Clawsons went to Vermilion and Champaign Cos. in IL, Davis and Van Buren Cos. in Iowa, and Ephraim Clawson took the Oregon trail ca 1852. There were Clawsons who went to Monroe, Wisconsin, and Wood Co VA (lat!
!
!
er West VA). Would love to exchange info with anyone who might be connected to these Clawsons.

You have probably noticed that many GenConnect boards have been
gatewayed to their respective RootsWeb email lists. I have not done this
for any of the surname resources that I administer.
It has always been possible to subscribe and be notified of new posts
made to one or many boards--and, most importantly, unsubscribe from the
notification service.
With gatewayed resources, all list subscribers will automatically
receive board posts. The only way to stop the mail from GenConnect is
to unsubscribe from the RootsWeb email list.
I have made the process of subscribing to (or unsubscribing from) the
notification service for any or all of *my* boards even easier. To
subscribe, go to:

and click on 'Post Notification Subscription Service'.
I hope this meets your needs.
