I am searching for information on what became of Mary J. Norton, who married Emil Clauss in 1900 in Manhattan. Emil was the son of John Clauss and Emily Smyth. He had brothers Adolph and Joseph that I know of. Mary J. Norton (sometimes called "May") was the daughter of John Henry Norton, Jr., and Margaret McHugh. She was born in New York City in 1878, and had brothers Haywood F. Norton and William S. Norton. Emil Clauss died (1903) shortly after he and Mary were married in 1900. A few years later, Mary married again to or had a relationship with someone else by the surname Clauss. She had a child named Henry N "Harry" Clauss with this man. Harry was born in October of 1908, and died at the age of 14 in 1923 (of endocarditis secondary to a tonsil infection-- so sad!). Meanwhile, As far as I know, Mary never again married. The last record I have of her is on the 1930 census. She is living in Queens, NY, is single (widowed) and living alone at the age of 51.
My question is, what became of this woman? I am trying to answer questions about the mystery of the Norton family fall-out. Evidentally, the descendants of William S. Norton never knew that he had a sister, Mary. Why?
