My great great grandfather was Joseph Clauss. I do not have a birth date or definate place of birth for him. He took out papers for declaration of Intention for citizenship on Aug 20 1852 in Knox Co., IN. The papers state he was 38 years old. )This would mean he was born ca. 1814). He stated that he arrived at New Orleans Dec 26, 1845 and was a native of France. As you may be aware Alsace Lorraine has been a part of both France and Germany at various times.
Joseph Clauss settled in Vincennes, Knox Co., IN. He had at least 5 children, including, Andrew, Anton, John, Nicholas and a Michael b. 1867. While searching census records recently, I came across a 1900 census that stated the # of children born to a mother who was also listed. This said Joseph and his wife had 11 children, 5 of whom were living.
As you stated in your information the surname of my gg grandfather has also been spelled various ways in various records, including some of the spellings you give for your ancestors surname, among others.
I have absolutely no idea when Joseph Clauss died, but I believe it was before the 1880 census as he is not listed in that. There was a family cemetery on his farm and apparently that is where he was buried. I am assuming the 6 children who died were also buried there. Unfortunately, no records of their deaths exist and the cemetery has been gone for I don't know how many years.
I would be happy to correspond with you regarding our common Clauss surname regardless of whether we are related or not. Perhaps between the two of us we can accomplish something that may be beneficial to at least one of us, if not both.
Mary Thibaut.
