I am trying to locate the parents or siblins of my great great grandfather, Michael Clauss.
Michael was born 11 JAN 1800 somewhere in the Alsace area. He immigrated to America sometime about 1830 (alone or with his family unknown) and settled in Butler County, PA. Michael married Marie Eva Schmidt who was born 3 APR 1811 in Bensheim, Germany. Michael and a handful of Marie's cousins helped to found the St. Joseph German Catholic Church in Butler County, PA. Michael, Marie and several of their children are buried in the church cemetery.
But my 'brick wall' is Michael's heritage. I have found no trace of him in any passenger lists. His immigration records are very vague with no good detail included. Marriage records in PA at the time were held by the churches only, and all the early churches in the area have had fires where the records were lost.
Michael spelled his surname CLAUSS on his naturalization papers, but church records recorded it as KLAUS, and the children of Michael and Marie used either the CLAUSE or CLOUSE (used currently in PA) spellings.
If you have a stray brother/uncle in your tree, I'd appreciate the help. Thanks!
Joyce
