Gary C. Murphree
Houston, MS
Houston—Gary Carter Murphree, 57, died early Friday evening, March 11,
2011 at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo after a long illness. He
was born September 25, 1953 in Houston, the son of Maxine Linn Murphree
and the late John Alan Murphree. He was the grandson of Emma Boyce Linn
and William James "Willie Jim" Linn of Trebloc (Houston) and Bessie
Carter Murphree and Roy C. Murphree of Big Creek(Calhoun City). He grew
up in Trebloc, graduated from Houston High School, and received his
Bachelor of Science degree in general agriculture from Mississippi State
University in 1976. Gary was a member of the Farm House Fraternity.
He returned to Trebloc where, following in the tradition of his
grandfather, Willie Jim and his father, Johnny, he learned the family's
farming and cattle business. He eventually created his own operation,
and became active in the Mississippi Farm Bureau, the Mississippi
Cattleman's Association as well as the Chickasaw County Cattleman's
Association where he served as either President or Vice-President for 9
years. He was an active member of the Mississippi State University
Extension Service, serving both on the Agriculture Advisory Committee
and on the Producer Advisory Council. Twice he was a voting delegate
representing Mississippi at the American Soybean Association National
Convention.
He pursued an interest in farming and farm real estate eventually owning
and becoming President of U.S. South, Inc., a farm and commercial real
estate company. He quickly rose to leadership positions at the state
level in the real estate business. In 2004, Governor Haley Barber
appointed Gary as one of 5 real estate commissioners for the State of
Mississippi. He served as Vice-President of that Commission and
eventually had to decline the Presidency ( that was held for him)
because of his illness. Other Leadership positions included serving on
the National Association of Realtor's 2005 Commercial Alliance
Committee. He was a member of the Executive Committee of both the
regional and state Association of Realtors. He was active in the
Realtors Land Institute of Mississippi serving in different years as the
group's Secretary, Vice-President and President.
Gary will be remembered most for his love of people, many talents, and
great sense of humor. He knew everyone and everyone knew him. He was
often encouraged to enter politics because of his innate people skills
but resisted offering himself for elected office. In spite of resisting
the urging to enter politics, he was very active in the Republican Party
in Mississippi. In 2004 he received a National Republican Congressional
Committee Leadership Award as Honorary Co-Chairman of the Business
Advisory Council and traveled to Washington regularly to meet with the
State Congressional delegation in his leadership roles in farming,
ranching, and real estate.
He was a member of the McCondy Methodist Church and a lay speaker in the
Methodist Church for 28 years. At many of the services where he spoke,
his solo tenor was a regular part of the worship. He was active in
community services serving as a board member of Crime-Stoppers and as a
member of the Houston Exchange Club. He was a Mason.
He is survived by his mother , Maxine L. Murphree; a brother, A. Linn
Murphree, MD of Los Angeles, CA; a sister, Gayle Lindsey (John) of
