Subject: Emeline Savilla STRAUB b 1829 Columbia Co., PA, parents?
John/Jonathan
Hi Garry,
There is are several records for Emeline/Emmaline STRAUB in
familysearch.com, IGI records.
Several for her birth indicating she was born Nov 16 1824 or Nov 16 1829
and also for her
marriage to Jacob Peter STECKER in 1841 or 1842 in Columbia, PA.
One record in particular indicates Emmaline STRAUB was born Nov 16 1824
to parents
John P. STRAUB & Harriot. This record is all I have had to go on in my
13 year search.
(Later census records indicate Emeline STRAUB was born in 1829.)
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=ancestorsear
chresults.asp
Another familysearch.org IGI records indicates Emeline STRAUB was born
Nov 16 1829 to
parents Adam STRAUB and Mary GRUBER. (Can't remember if I have discussed
this possibility
with anyone on the list.)
Yes, there is an 1830 census for Jonathan STRAUB, as follows (nothing
earlier or later in Columbia Co., PA)--
1830 US Census, Mahoning, Columbia Co., PA
STRAUB, Jonathan
Males
1-(5-10) (I have never found the name of a male sibling for Emeline STRAUB)
1-(20-30) (this would correspond with birth year of 1798 for
John/Jonathan Peter STRAUB--Diana)
Females
1-(under 5) (possibly Emeline--later census records correspond with 1829
as her birth year)
1-(20-30) (possibly Harriot? born 1802)
Also on this 1830 Mahoning, Columbia Co., PA census are-
Adam STRAUB
Barbara STRAUB
On the 1850 Census for Chapman, Union co., PA there lists a Jonathan
STRAUB, who would be
the right age for a brothor of Emeline STRAUB (per 1830 Mahoning
Columbia PA census),
named after his father--
1850 US Census, Chapman Union Co., PA
STRAUB, Jonathan, 27, Laborer, b PA
STRAUB, Catherine, 26, b PA (probably CLAUSER-per rootsweb family trees)
STRAUB, Augustas
Any of your wise thoughts, ideas, opinions or suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.
I would love to know how my John/Jonathan Peter STRAUB fits into a
documented
line of ancestry.

Just a quickie and I'm off to bed...
As you know, it's easy to make a mistake with the pre-1850 censuses, so with
that caveat... I had pegged the Jonathan STRAUB in Columbia [now Montour]
County as the Jonathan STRAUB who married Catharine CLAUSER:
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/Census/StraubEtc/PA/Str-PA-1830.shtml
I may be mistaken, of course. And there's always the possibility that
Jonathan
married Harriet first and Catharine second. I haven't looked into it. I
have,
at this point, extracted all STRAUB/STROUP/etc. census records in PA from
1790
through 1880, so unless someone was very badly mis-indexed, what you see is
what
there is. And in that vein, any time anyone finds a STRAUB/STROUP/etc.
census
record for PA that I do not have, please share as it will be a service to
all of
us.
Yi! I had not hear of J.J. Peter STECKER's murder. What a tale to have in
your
family.
Night y'all,
Diana

Subject: Jonathan STRAUB b abt 1823 (+ Catharine CLAUSER), possible sister
Hi Diana M.
As always, thank you so much for your information.
I may be mistaken, but isn't the Jonathan STRAUB b abt 1823,
who married Catharine CLAUSER b abt 1826, the one on the
1850 census in Chapman, Union, PA, with a son Augustas STRAUB b abt 1845.
If this is correct, this Jonathan would be too young to be
the Jonathan STRAUB on the 1830 census as he would
only have been 6 yrs old.
The Jonathan STRAUB on the 1830 census for Mahoning,
Columbia Co., PA, per census, would have been born
between 1800-1810. All the tick marks fit for this record
to be Jonathan STRAUB b abt 1798, m Harriot b 1802,
daughter Emeline STRAUB b 1829 ( and unknown male b 1820-1825).
Is it possible the Jonathan STRAUB who married Catharine
CLAUSER is the brother of Emeline STRAUB ?? His age
would fit perfectly for the unknown male son b 1820-1825 on the 1830
census record.
In looking at your website, I noticed your DURFEE ancestry.
My husband Larry OWEN is also descended from Thomas Durfee b 1643,
Portsmouth, Newport RI (his 7th Gr Grandfather--you two are related :-)
Regarding the murder of Emeline STRAUB STECKER's husband John/Jacob
Peter STECKER, here is
an excerpt from a 1962 family letter describing the a sad incident--
"Our Grandpa Stecker was murdered at the (Lake House) on the east end of
Cannon Lake (Warsaw, Faribault Co., MN), it was used for a saloon and
tough men hung out there, and Grandpa had gone that day to Fairibult
with a load of stock to sell. And he came back there and disappeared.
(they the murders) Killed and robbed him and stuck him under the ice.
(this lake house is still standing where it was when that fatal time
happened. When he shot a duck it fell close in the rushes where Grandpa
Stecker layed.) And the next
spring your father was hunting ducks and found him. Sticking out of the
ice. Not too far I guess from the Lake House. Our Mother said they
looked all winter for him. And she said they found shavings in the lake
house basement where the club had been shittled out there with long
nails drove in it. And hit him over the head driving the nails in his
skull. I guess your Dad, Uncle Jake even found the club lying on the
ice. Granpa John Peter Stecker is buried in the Warsaw Cemetary close by
where he was killed when Uncle Henry Morris and Aunt Minnie were back on
a visit one time we went down to the Warsaw Cemetery. Aunt Minn showed
about where he was buried. He has not tombstone."
Sweet dreams,
Diana Chapman Owen

Message Board Post:
I have a John probably Johannas Kelchner that died in 1801 in Upper Bern,
Berks county. He names his brother, Jacob as the one who will look after
his family. His sons names are of course the same ones handed down.
Heinrich born abt. 1773, married a Susannah, Jacob born abt. 1775, married
Elizabeth Windbiegler and Daniel born about 1785, married Catharina
Clauser, daughter of Philip and Anna Althouse Clauser. All three sons
baptised their children at St. Michael's church in Upper Bern. They also
had a sister, Catharine, suprise surprise. I think John could be a son of
Hans George Kelchner. John's wife in 1801 as mentioned in his will was
Margaret. Hopefully someone is out there with some of these same names.
