Subject: Re: David Clouser - Ohio>Illinois
Christine,
Margaret Clouser who married John Caldwell 27 Aug 1835 in Ross is not a
sister to David Clouser, who was born in 1825. She is one of 3 Ross Co.
Clousers that Richard Flinn was unable to identify when he compiled his
genealogy "The Clouser and Cripps Families of Ross Co., Ohio."
He speculated that Margaret might be a daughter of Simon Clouser and Mary
Noecker of Ross Co. Simon was probably, but not proved to be, a brother to
John Clouser, the grandfather of David Clouser. John Clouser's mother name
was Margaret Wagner, wife of Simon Clouser. (And of course, **if** Simon is
a brother, Margaret would also be Simon's mother.) David's father was
George Clouser.
At the time he compiled the genealogy (1987), Flinn had no record of
descendants of Margaret (Clouser) and John Caldwell. The given names you
list are very suggestive of this family. According to his son, William's
Bible, Simon Clouser and Mary Noecker were married 17 May 1810 by a Rev.
"Hellenstein Shellenstein Fellenstein" This appears to be an attempt by
the transcriber to decipher the minister's name. A Jonathan Helffenstein
was pastor of the First Reformed Church of Carlisle, PA 1805-1811, then was
succeeded by his brother Albert.
The children of Simon Clouser/Clauser and Margaret Wagner were (all born PA):
John, b. between 1771 and 1775, mar. Christina Cripps
Elizabeth, b. abt 1873, mar. John Henry
Margaret, b. abt 1775, mar. Wendel Michael
Catherine, b. abt 1777, mar. Robert Stewart
Simon, b. abt 1779 (believed but not proven to be the Simon who married
Mary Noecker)
Mary, b. March-Apr 1787, m. Henry Cripps.
Mary was in utero when her father, Simon, died. Margaret was expecting,
according to Simon's will.
Hope this helps.

To clarify this name origination is not easy and there is background on
the name at
http://www/swiss-surnames.org/home.mv
Here you will find the surnames researched by Julius Billeter, a Swiss
Genealogist, and it is suggested to verify his work by reading the
Parish films at www.familysearch.org; as some of the Parishes are now
available on LDSfilm at your Family History Library. Billeter has the
name originating in the 1600's as GLAUSER.
Second source for many different spellings, such as, Kleisli & Chlaisli
or Chlaeisli; Klausli & Choeisli; Klauser & Chlauser; Klaus & Chlaus;
Klaeui; and that source is ZURCHER Familiennamen, Complete
An umlaut adds an e to the name which equals ZUERCHER for ZURCHER and
all the above names I did add the e for an umlaut.
An "a" after the Swiss town indicates an old family.
The Swiss Surnames do appear in Picton Press books and are available in
libraries which reveals that KLAUSNER is also suppose to be Klauser.
Please collect all names so that we can someday connect all the
families; religions can be different as during the 1700's there was a
lot of religious change in Europe. The Alexander Mack group probably
left Germany because there were only 3 accepted religions there and
Brethren (Dunkard) was not one of them. Encyclopedia Britannica is good
for the history.

CLAUSER , Children - DIED December 1888 in Allentown. Three children of

Died of scarlet fever.
Hans and Susanna are my 4xs grandparents.
Here is what I have:
Susannah Kolb, b.1732, married Hans Jurg(George) Klauser October 25,1753 at
Schwartswald Reformed Church, Alsace, Berks County. Her date of death is
unknown.
Susannah was formerly a Pietist(or a menber of the Brethren)but was baptised
into the Lutheran faith September 24, 1758 at the Augustus Evangelical
Lutheran Church, Trappe, Montgomery County, PA. Her sponsor was Anna Maria
Muhlenberg, the wife of the Reverend Melchior Muhlenberg. Hans also forsake
his Brethren faith and
joined the same Lutheran Chuch sometime before Susannah.
I have no information regarding Susannah's parents
They had 8 children. (will provide info if needed)
Hans Jurg was born about 1727 in Germany, died September 1812 in Earl, Berks
County, PA His parents were Hans Jarick(Yarick) Klauser b.1699(or 1700) and
Anna Marie Weiser b. 1703. They had 4 sons, all born in Germany, Michael b.
1723, Johannes, b. abt. 1725, Jacob, b. abt. 1725(twin of Johannes?) and Hans
Jurg. There was a daughter, Anna Margaretha, b. about 1721. Little is known
about what happened to Michael and Anna Margaretha, but it is certain that
Jacob, Johannes and Hans Jurg came to America with their parents
The Klausers were Palatines from a province called the Palatinate which was
part of the Holy Roman Empire, now part of Germany. There is some unverified
data that indicates Hans Jarick's birth place as Bern, Switzerland, but even
if that is so, it is also certain that they were Palatines from the
Palatinate.
After the Reformation they became followers of Alexander Mack, the founder of
The Brethren religious sect(Dunkers) and accompanied him and 57 other
Dunkers to America on the Ship Allen from Rotterdam, to Cowes on the Isle of
Wight, then on to America They sailed from Cowes on July 7, 1729 arriving in
Phila. September 11, 1729.
I have more data, too much to detail now. I will be happy to provide what I
have if you will provide specific questions.
Hope this helps. dutchmi(a)aol.com

My dear second cousin once removed, Carolyn Johnson, sent me copies of the
obituaries for Joseph William Clauser and his wife Rosa Heberly Clauser
that were printed in the Allentown Morning Call early in the 1900's. Since
they are lengthy, I am debating whether to post them here. If you are
interested in obtaining a copy, please respond via this mailing list. Thanks!

someone finds a connection. Manetta, you have a Rev. Daniel Clauser--does
