hi there,
i could not find any town called "tiling" or "tilling". could it be "toenning" ?
after 1864 schleswig came under german (prussian) government.and later around 1900 the region was renamed "schleswig-holstein".
my family also comes from schleswig, from the area around garding. in this region "clausen" is not a rare family name and can be compared with the frequency of names like "miller" or "brown".
do you see a chance to scan the page with the name of the town and send it to me to my e-mail account "office(a)genero.com" ? regards
peter

Hello Peter,
I am not sure of the town Tiling. It is written in a family bible and my father thought he remembered it as Tellings or Tillings or Tilings and is the only clue I have. In the census records her place of origin is given as: schleswig Holstein (1920), "German" (1910), Germany (1900). She spoke "high" german according to my father. He was raised by her as a small boy and spoke flawless high german all his life. I did find a town called Tellingstad? in Schleswig. I understand this has been a region of dispute between Germany and Denmark for many decades. She immigrated to the US sometime between 1872-1875 but haven't been able to locate her immigration records. Why the question about "Tiling"?

Update. Anna married John G. Miller in Illinois. He was from Little Falls, Herkimer, New York. Hope this clarifies this and we make a connection.
