My great granddad was Thomas Clausen--he died in 1985 and lived to be almost 100 years old. His mother was Mary Margaret, and she died at the age of 30 in Ladner's Landing, British Columbia, Canada shortly after giving birth to her last baby.
Tom's father was Charles Nicolai Clausen--supposedly, Charles Clausen came from Denmark, but I can't find any immigration records for him.
Charles N Clausen and Maria Thompson were married in 1885 in Victoria, BC.
I find that Charles Clausen was working at the Ottawa Hotel in Victoria City, Vancouver Island, and at a hotel in Ladner's Landing, according to the 1889 BC voter registration. (might be the same place, I don't know.)
I then see, in the that he is part of a crew on some kind of ship in 1891 census (the same year as the death of his wife.) He is listed, however, as being Swedish.
I have the 1901 census that shows C Clausen, of Denmark, as working on a "seal" ship.
A strange thing: 1880 US census shows a "C Clawson" from Denmark working in a hotel on Widby Island, WA state.
I also find that Charles Clausen married a lady named Sophie Peterson in WA state in 1884.
Family stories say that Charles Clausen was a member of Danish nobility, and that he was sent out of Denmark for "crimes" that he commited. I don't know how true this is. Family stories also say that he was married to two different women at once and that when one wife died, the other took the children, with the exception of Tom Clausen. Tom Clausen grew up in an orphanage. (The records I have found would prove this, if this is indeed the same Charles Clausen, and that he had a wife in the US and one in Canada.)
Does this ring a bell for anyone? I am having a lot of trouble finding info.
