Hello Joyce....
I have recently run into a John Gasper Claus. No info on him but he married
Mary Ann Buck 17 May 1790 in PA. She was b. 1768, d. 1803 in PA
Would you happen to have a John Gasper Claus in your family?
Thanks....

Hi, The Claus family name in its present form probably originated somewhere in southern Germany BUT there is Mohawk connection. A Claus family including Daniel and my ancestor Johann were tenants of William Johnston in the Mohawk valley in upper state New York prior to the American Revolution. The Clauses fought alongside Joseph Brant(Tyendinaga) and the Mohawk people against the rebel cause. After the termination of hostilities the Mohawk and Loyalists like my ancestors sought refuge in Canada. Daniel Claus became Director of Indian Affairs and was much admired by Joseph Brant for helping his people find land to settle in the Grand River area near present day Brantford. Several Mohawk families adopted the Claus surname at that time.

My ancestors are also Claus, or Klaus, or Clause or Clouse. But we are not of Mohawk decent.
My ancestor, Michael Claus came from the border region of France and Germany. Because that border fluctuated so many times prior to his immigrating to America, on some census documents he listed Germany and others France. His naturalization papers show that he was a native of Germany, but citizen of France.
I have seen the Name History Research Center's report for the Claus name. It mentions nothing about any indian ties - but then again, since you select your country of origin when ordering those things, whose to say if they are really correct or just a fabrication.
If you have any ties to PA with your Claus ancestry, let me know!
Joyce

My ggrandmother was Mary Claus. She was born in Marysville, KS and had a sister Emma among other siblings. The Claus family later moved to Princeton, Bureau Co., IL where Mary married Oliver C. Knauts.(This is my line) Emma married August Eickmeier (may be spelled Eichmeier). I have original letters from attorney J.A. Broughten in Marysville dated Dec. 1, 1899 and Oct.31, 1899 to Mary discussing the sale of property there after her father's death. Included with one letter is a hand-drawn map showing the Claus and surrounding properties with the owner's names. Adjoining the Claus land are two properties owned by Wm. Thiessen. Wm. Thiessen also owned another property across the "State Road." Other landowners were John Weiche, E.S. Rowland, O. Larson, J. Muller, and Chas Banblow (or Banklow). So, the Claus the Thiessen families were neighbors and no doubt good friends. I don't know of any other relationship. Jean, e-mail me and I will send you a copy of the map.

Hi Rosie,
I know Delia. She is related to me. I knew her as Aunt Delia although that was probably an over simplification.
Delia was the daughter of Emma Prunier and Henry Closs. I've seen Closs, Claus, Close, Carlos as spellings. I remember going to her house as a little kid.
I've got a bunch more on the Closs and Prunier families. Emma Closs, sister of Henry Closs, married Charles Prunier, brother of Emma Prunier. Emma Closs and Charles Prunier are my Great Grandmother and Grandfather.
Hope to hear from you. I'm at roblove(a)concentric.net.
Regards,
Bob Love
