No, its not an Irish name originally, although many will dispute this, but from North Yorkshire origin . As Far as I can Tell there were no Clasbys in Ireland before 1722, (which is the Date of the earliest surviving Irish record) The name Clasby, as far as I am aware, originates from Cleasby in North Yorkshire The name Cleasby is abundant in Northern Counties. Asculphus de Cleseby was mentioned in legal documents (temp Edward 3rd). The name migrated somehow to Ringwood in Hampshire where William Clasby was farming land in the time of Elizabeth first. The spelling change is attributable to illiteracy and local dialect differences.A descendant of his was William Clasby who married Abiel Gardner in Massachusetts in 1719, but prior to this I believe some of the Clasbys accompanied Cromwell into Ireland and settled there too, hence the many Clasbys claiming Irish Ancestry, although there is no existing reference to the name in Ireland prior to the early eighteenth century.(I sta!
nd to be
corrected?) Some say it is a corruption of Gillespie, but as the Clasby name was already well settled in England by this time, I have yet to be convinced. Other than Hampshire, there is evidence of the North to South migration throughout Lincolnshire Suffolk and Essex, but the majority of Clasbys definitely seem to have their roots in Hampshire.

Sorry for the delay in replying, I have been away. Edwards age on the
marriage certificate is stated as 22. Clasby seems to be an uncommon name.
Ireland seems to come up in the family, is CLASBY an Irish name?
Regards
June
