Hi again Clarissa
Was just reading up on Quakers - they didn't really get founded in England till 1650's - and if John Clary came to the USA 1642 he was unlikely to be a Quaker initially.
Kind regards
Annn

I don't have any male Clarys left to test. I have to go back to the 1700s and try to trace different lines. Lots of Clary orphans on my side. I posted here hoping that someone was related to John Clary and had a male Clary left.....so far, no luck.

I've also just quickly pieced together the 3rd Clary in a tree - again descended from Thomas Clary b1630.

Hi
The Clary haplogroup from Thomas Clary b1630 is R-M269, as is of course my brother's/father's etc.
2 of the Clary relatives that we are related to are descended (about 9xgreat grandsons) of Thomas - along different lines which separated early. I haven't yet done a tree for the 3rd Clary.
What is your Clary haplogroup?

Hi Ann,
Thanks so much for replying. What is the haplogroup of your Clarys?
John Clary was not Catholic. Likely Quaker though I have no proof. All the Clarys I know stayed in Massachusetts until 1819 when 1 clary moved to VA for health reasons. I have access to some letters written by this family prior to the 1860's. I have tried to find out if the other Clarys living in VA were somehow related, but have been unable to do that.
One letter stated they had no family living in VA and after a Clary died in the Civil War the child was returned to family in Massachusetts.
Again thanks for replying!

Hello
We may be distantly related. My family is certainly related to the descendants of Thomas Clary (b1630, in Virginia from 1653 and maybe earlier) as we have proved that with a Y-DNA test.
Do you know what religion your John Clary practised when he came to the USA - maybe the marriage records show it? I'm curious whether he was Catholic or Presbyterian.
Is Watertown and Hadley the only places he is associated with, or just the earliest known?
I am in Australia and my subscription doesn't allow me to view many of the US records, but I do wonder whether there is any connection between Thomas Clary and your John Clary. Apparently there are records to suggest that a Thomas Clary was in the USA in 1642 - but no-one knows if its the same one that later was back in 1653.
Kind regards
Ann Knight

Hello - here in Australia my family is descended from James Cleary b1852 in Ireland. My brother has just done his Y-67 tests with FTDNA and the 3 closest results out of a total of 4 are:
1. Jason Scott Clary (descended from Thomas Clary b1630)
2. Charles Hawes Clary
3. Brian Neil Clary
My brother is part of the Cleary/Clary DNA project.
Can anyone share the family tree for Thomas Clary, or whoever you are descended from? I have an Ancestry subscription for UK/Australia so am not sure if your USA tree will be able to be shared with me but I would surely appreciate it or a pointer to any information publically available elsewhere.
We have no real knowledge of who our James Cleary ancestor was beyond that he fathered 2 children illegitimately - we only have his name because he was wanted by the police for deserting his children (one of whom was my grandfather here in Australia). We would like to try and trace who he was which is why a lot of my family have done DNA testing now - my brother for the Y-DNA,and several siblings with 23andMe.
Grateful for any leads.

Just an aside. Years ago my business travels had me working in Ireland. I traveled much of the island and ever town or village that I stopped at I would look into the phone directories for the Clary name. One day my Irish counterpart asked me what I was doing and I explained that I was interested in trying to find more about my wife's family roots. He then very promptly told me, after I gave him the Clary surname, that "all those horse thevin scoundrels were run out or Ireland years ago". Well, after a bit more research when I returned, guess what? Some of the early Kentucky Clary clan were said to have been caught for 'horse thevin'. Just a thought when looking to deep into your history.

I understand your frustration with the name 'John'. I wish I had a dollar for every Andreas, Jakob, and Josef in my line! The information that I have for the Clary line was mostly presented to me by the Clary relatives that are active genealogy wise. The John Clary that is in my line is reported to have been born in Galway (sp?) Ireland 15 Aug 1772 with and 'Unknown Name' Clary father born (I'll assume in Ireland as well) abt, 1750. All of my John Clary's children are reported to have been born in Kentucky (Daviess County area). So no NE connections here. Sorry. But if your ever find a thread that points to this branch, let me know. Good luck on your search.

Thanks so much for your reply. Darn I have 13 John Clarys in my database, but none that match yours. I have 5 William's and again no match. My Clary line goes back to 1643 in Watertown, Massachusetts where there is a record of John Clary. If your Clary line can be traced back to MA let me know. The chances would be greater then. There are Clarys from both Ireland and England and I'm trying to figure out which is my line.
Thanks again.

While not my primary focus (CLARY) I try and keep up with this line; my wife's maiden name is Clary, so I have an obligation to try and fill in as many 'holes' as possible. The information and research that I have done indicates two (at least) major branches of the Clary line. One grouped in the South West and the other in the South East (Kentucky) My wife is of the Kentucky variety. So, depending on which major branch you are researching, my wife and one of her sisters had sons. My wife has no brothers. My records go back to a John Clary (1772-1853), with a son, William (1826-1886). If this is your line then I could perhaps ask one of my sons or nephews if they would like to participate.

I'd be willing to pay for a male Clary to be tested if I could find one. Looking for someone with a proven lineage to any of these Clarys:
Henry Eldridge Clary (~1823-1862) m Margaret Spencer
Henry Clary (1796-1829) m Sarah sallie Eldridge (1800-1824)
Joseph Clary (1756-1827) m Polina Frary (1761-1820)
John Clary (1722-1798) m Rachel Eastman (1725-1782)
Thanks!
