Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I made a mistake earlier today when I said Carl Sandburg wrote "The
Sangamon". (Senior moment) The Sangamon was written by Edgar Lee Masters and
was a part of the River of America series in the mid-30's.

I have a picture of William Price Clary on my ancestry family page. It was furnished by Ken Clary who is the great grandson of William J.Clary. He lives close to Mineral Wells, Texas and has a little park for campers there. You should be able to google him.

Margaret,
Just found this feed again... LOL
I imagine the Clary's were just like any other Farmer
Rancher family.. When it is warm enough and dry enough
to plow and then plant the crops they would get up about
4 in the morning. Feed the mules or horses breakfast and go feed and milk the cows. While the animals were eating the farmer would go to the house and the family would be awoke for breakfast. The farmwife cooked. Then fresh eggs, fresh beacon or ham, grits and home made bisquits with fresh butter dripping from them with homemade Jellie's, Jam's or some fresh honey they stole from a bee tree. After breakfast was finished, the wife cleaned up the dishes and would put on a pot of red "Pinto" beans, sometimes chicken and dumplins.. The farmer would go to the barn and harness up the horses or mules, which ever he prefered to work with. Then he would hitch them to a plow and head to the field and work until about 5 or 10 minute's to 12, then head to the house for a warm main meal lunch. While he was eating the horses or mules were also fed and given water to drink. After a little rest or nap, the farmer would go to the barn and hitch up the horses or mules and return to the field!
and plow until about 5:00. Then he would go to the house and take the harness off the horses and mules, feed and water them. The wive's usually owned the chickens and they would gather up the eggs and feed the girls/hens and go to the house and strain the milk and start supper which was usually left overs for lunch... Now the wives would be washing clothes on a rub board or sewing or housework.
Later on when the weeds were beginning to grow in the fields the whole family took to the field to chop cotton, or peanuts. The wife also owened the garden and orchards. Those also had to be plowed early and the grass and weeds chopped... So I think our ancestors worked their buns off and didn't have a lot of time for bad behavior. But they were also just like us and every once in a while they liked to play pratical jokes or just have a little fun... I am so thankful for our ancestor's and how they helped build up America...

Carl Sandburg's book "The Sangamon" described the life in the area by
saying "Life in early Illinois was hard on women and cattle". For anyone who
has family in the Sangamon Valley area specifically Menard and Sangamon
Counties, Sandburg's book has a trove of info about some of the families.
There is a drawing of the gravestone on the John Clary, Jr. grave. When we
visited the Old Concord Cemetery over 40 years ago the stone was completely
visible. When we visited about 6 or 7 years ago, the stone has sunk into the
ground and some of the writing on it wasn't visible. So glad I took a
picture of it 40+ years ago.

I don't know the story, but I have a picture of William Price Clary's store and a not so good picture of William Price Clary. My mother has letters that Abraham Lincoln wrote to William Price Clary. I don't know if I could get her to share a copy or not, but I could ask if anyone is interested.

I'm trying to find some information on the Clary side of things starting with George W. and going back.
I have George W & his wife Margaret Conrad.
I have his father James Clary and his wife Susan Bigler
At this point the Clary side of things stops cold. There is a ton of information on the Biglers so that's easy, but the Clary side is a dead-end. I have seen a couple of variations on spelling which might have something to do with it.
To the best of my knowledge they all lived in NE Ohio / Pennsylvania.
