I am part of the Clary line. The "Clary Grove Boys" were, indeed considered roudys. In addition, Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Armstrong knew them well. In fact, Mr. Lincoln actually lived a while with the Clary's and others. In biography
books of Abe Lincoln, the Clary Boys are always mentioned. When Abe and Jack Armstrong had their famous match, it was the Clary Boys who put them up to it. All remained friends for a lifetime. It is said that one of the Clary girls married Jack Armstrong. There is now a Park in that area
that tells the history of the group.

I do not have the book, but know about it. It has been
out of print for quite a long time.
The people you refer to are part of my line, however, they came here from Ireland in 1653 and possibly 6 years earlier.
They began in Virginia (where many still live). Some then migrated to Maryland and later to Penna. Some then migrated to SC and to Missouri and then to Texas. We Clary's are everywhere.

Hi
I am sure you have this book but I will list it in any case -
Title: Clary Genealogy, Four Early American Lines and Related Families
Author: Ralph Shear Rowland and Star Wilson Rowland
Published: December 1980 - (Self)
Dedicated to: Mary Ethelyn (Clary) Rowland
Either Vachel Clary was a common name or a family name carried forward. According to my records, there were three men
1. Vachel Clary born in Maryland son of John Clary and Mary Deveron
2. Vachel Clary born in Maryland son of Daniel Clary and Eleanor Deveron
3. Vachel Clary, Jr. born in South Carolina, son of Vachel Clary and Mary Brooks, Mrs.
My second great-grand father William Delton Clary born in South Carolina married Mary Ann Young in Hamilton County, IL 14 Oct 1833
They had twelve (12) children all born in, Illinois predominantly Saline County,
William Delton was the father to my Great grand mother Nancy Griffin Clary Eldorado, Saline County Illinois
My point is the Clary's appear to have come from many different places starting in England (maybe).grin. Now there is more than you cared to know
Take cake Don Darwin

I have been unable to make any progress in identifying what would be my great-great grandfather. I am posting on the Clary message board, but my family seems to be consistent in the double "r" spelling. They also seem to have located in the Ohio area at least as early as the 1840/50's.
The info I know: THOMAS W Clarry (my great grandfather) was born 26 Oct 1852 in Ohio OR Kentucky OR Indiana (the census records vary), and died 22 Aug 1922 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. He married EMMA LOUISE NETTER Abt. 1879 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, daughter of CHARLES NETTER and CATHERINE PASOLD. Emma was born 27 Feb 1863 in Ohio, and died 27 May 1921 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. Any hookup to this family would be great, but my main hope would to know something about Thomas (siblings, parents, Irish?, English? ...)
Possibilities may be Merle Clarry born abt. 1826 in Yorkshire, England, and married to Fanny Kirsting. Other indications are that it may be a Charles Clarry born in Indiana abt. 1830. Thanks to any who can help.
