Thanks for the reply. You are correct. Our Robert W left Alabama after the civil war and we found him in St Landry Parish in 1873 marrying Fannie A Lassetter (no info on her except we believe she was from Ala.) He arrives in Texas without her and marries Margaret Harrison. They have on son John, thus our Clary family line in Texas. Because of his early demise we have don't have family history or stories handed down except for hearsay.
As far as Leonidas L. do you know if he was in the war? Do you have his records? There may be a clue. We have Robt with a Leonidas in the
Ala. 5th at the surrender.
>From earlier research we believed there were two Mary Sledge women in the 1860 census. A Leonidas in the northern division sumter co, and Leonidas L in the southern division sumter co.
Haven't had time to research the Samuel Clay. Interesting the first names are all listed and most bithdates are correct. Did Samuel Clay (Clary) die before the 1870 census? Is there a will or any probate records? Will try to research further next week.
There are several Sledge Family trees on rootsweb.com. Have you looked there?

Let me take another stab at this. I still think the Samuel H. Clay in the 1850 Sumter Co., AL census is really a Clary. I looked at it again and realized that the unnamed 1 year old person that I thought was a female is really a male. This is probably the 10 year old Samuel that is with L. A. Sledge in 1860. I still don't know how the Mary Clary that married Arthur Archibald Sledge relates but I imagine she does somehow. From the census and biographical notes I found the Sledge's were planters, slave owners, military officers, lawyers, and doctors. In contrast the Clary's seem to have worked for the Sledges as farmers and overseers.
Here is my abbreviated Sledge genealogy.
The parents of Caroline Matilda Sledge Clary were
Albert G. Sledge and Eliza Farmer.
His parents were
Joshua B. Sledge and Mary Purnell
Joshua's parents were
Arthur Archibald Sledge and Mary Clary
Arthur's parents were
Daniel Sledge and Winifred House (Her first marriage was to an Isham)
Daniel's parents were
John Sledge and Mary Rebecca Ivey
Both the Sledge and Clary lines were in Virginia in the late 1600's. The Sledge's are from England and the Clary's from Ireland.
Your thoughts and questions?

I have a Cen. for 1910 that has Benjamins Douglas married to a Nancy C. and My grandpa knows this Grandpa's name was Benjamin Douglas Daniels he always called his grandmother Nan. Thank You For this Info. I am going to seach it now to see what i come up with. Nancy-Nan-Nannie-Mamie (whatever her name might be) has me very curious. My Pa says he was always told she was Full Cherokee Indian. Unsure if that is fact or just family hearsay. I am just starting out to trace back my family that is my goal for 2009 to find out where both my mother and fathers families came from. Any help with this family would be wonderful. TJ Strong

Thanks, Hopefully we can help each other. Let me give some of my research before we speculate.
I am researching Leonidas Clary b. abt. 1835 - d.? probably in Sumter Co., AL. I believe Leonidas is the father of Albert Lloyd Clary b. 1872 in Alabama and d. 1843 in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, LA. In the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 St. Landry Parish censuses there is a Joseph Clary, first living with a Burleigh family then with an Emma Boutte, b. 1848 Alabama. In both the 1910 and 1920 censuses Joseph is listed as Emma's nephew and they are living next door to Albert. That would seem to make her a Clary, probably the younger siser to Leonidas. In 1877 there is a marriage record of an Emma Sledge marrying a Francois Boutte who apparently died before 1910. In 1930 Joseph is living with Albert and is listed as a brother. This is important because in the 1880 Sumter Co., AL record Leonidas and his second wife, Sara E. Wells Hall have this same Joseph living with them, along with four children from her first marriage and one from theirs, Lena, b. 1879.
In 1870 Leonidas and his first wife, Caroline Sledge, d. of A. G. Sledge have three children. George, b. 1854, Joseph b. 1867, and Ann b. 1867. I don't know where George came from but here is Joseph again. Caroline and Leonidas were married in 1865 and she must have died abt. 1877 because that is when he married a second time.
In 1860 Leonidas is in the census twice. Once from June he is living with Mary Sledge in the Southern District. In July he is found with the same Mary, this time in the Northern District, living next to A. G. Sledge and his family. Caroline is in the household so this is apparently where he met her.
I have had no luck with finding him in 1850 except for a possibility found in the Samuel Clay family. All of our names are present, including your Robert, and an unnamed female child that could be Emma.
I have found a marriage from a Robert W. Clary to Margaret Harrison in 1876 with a child named John b. 1877. Margaret was born in Arkansas. Robert was living in Freestone Co., Texas and died there in 1877. Do you think this is your Robert?
Long enough for now. I will add more after hearing back from you.
Wallace in Baton Rouge

Thank you for a reply. We hit a brick wall and were not able to determine Robert W Clary parents or siblings. We beleive Robert, James and Samuel (living with Lemuel Sledge) are linked to the marriage of Mary Clary and Arthur Archibald Sledge. From civil war records Robert and Leonidas surrendered together in the Alabama 5th. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated and we will gladly share any info we have on the Clary-Sledge line.

I am researching Leonidas L. Clary who married Caroline Sledge. I believe he is a brother to your Robert W. Clary. I believe the James Clary you mention is also a brother. Please reply if you would like to exchange notes.
