I don't have any answers for you, but I did find a couple of Mercer's living near Nancy and William Clary in the 1820 Humphry Co, TN census:
Pg 159:
Mary Mercer no males, 2 2 0 1 0
Pg 165:
Levi Mercer 2 0 0 0 1 0 females:3 0 0 1 0
Pg 166
William Clary 2 2 1 3 0 2 2 0 0 1 0
[Note that the age of William should have been 54, but he is marked in the age bracket of 16-26, but Nancy is marked in the 45 bracket.] Ofcourse we all know these census can't be relied on 100%. I believe one of the 16-26 males is Edmond Vinson, illegitimate son of Nancy Mercer and James Vinson, but don't know who the others are.
Nancy and William Clary were married in 1794 - it is curious that no children were born between 1794 and 1800.
The Rowlands (Five Generations of Clarys...) make the summation that Clarissa Clary in 1840 Washington Co, AR could be the same as Nancy Mercer, or that Clarissa could be a second wife.
I have found an Agnes Clary (Nancy is another name for Agnes)living with her daughter Mary Clary and husband Michael Davidson. This Agnes/Nancy was born about 1770 in Virginia.
Census 1830 TN Fentress Davidson Michael 20001-1000101 Page 11 [note female over 45 also living with them could be Agnes]
Census 1840 TN Fentress Clay Agnes 0-00000001 Page 13
Census 1860 Cumberland Co, KY Burkesville
Davidson--Lucinda-25--f--TN--farmer & housekeeper $300-$100
Davidson--Pierson-22--m--TN--laborer$50
Davidson--Floyd-31--m--KY--laborer$80
Davidson--Margaret-16--f--TN--housework

I have been following communications about John Clary, Indiana.
My John Clary was b 1843 in Indiana to Putnam and Mary (Roller) Clary.
His obituary says he served in the Civil War in the 3rd Ohio Vol Inf
(possibly cavalry; there is a disallowed pension application for a John Clary
cavalry service) according to his obit (died 1916-1917) which also says he was
survived by a wife and 4 children. One child is said to have been Mrs. Alex
Preble of Cincinnati, OH.
