I am a new subscriber to the CLARY-L list. Here's my Clary line. I'd be
interested in learning more about my immigrant ancestor and meeting new
cousins.
1. To the best of my knowledge, my immigrant Clary ancestor was John
Clary, b. about 1660, place unknown.
The other ancestors were:
2. John Clary, b. about 1684 in Maryland
3. Daniel Clary, b. about 1710 in Maryland
4. William Clary, b. 22 Mar 1736 in Prince Georges County, Maryland
5. John Swearingen Clary, b. 23 July 1759 in Frederick County,
Maryland
6. John Clary, b. 2 Jan 1793 in Sumner County, Tennessee
7. William Carrol Clary (my ggf), b. 26 Feb 1823 in Sangamon County,
Illinois
8. Charles Carrol Clary (my gf), b. 10 Apr 1876 in Peru, Nemeha
County, Nebraska
9. Margery Marie Clary (my mother), b. 4 Jan 1912 in Omaha, Nebraska
John S. (generation 5) and his son, John (generation 6) were first
settlers in Clary's Grove, Illinois (near New Salem and close to
Springfield). Because Abraham LIncoln lived in that area as a youth, and
knew the Clarys, they get mentioned in several books.

Sorry,
I now understand some of the confusion lately in subscribing or
unsubscribing to the lists. Please note, the instructions for the digest
mode (CLARY-D) were in error. This was just brought to my attention by a
new subscriber. These were in the Welcome letter which all should have
received shortly after subscribing.
These letters have now been changed, but please note for future reference
the following:
If you're on Digest (CLARY-D)
then requests for unsubscribing and resubscribing should go to
CLARY-D-request(a)rootsweb.com <mailto:CLARY-D-request@rootsweb.com> and not
to what your welcome letters probably state, which is have the "L" instead
of the "D".
Thanks, and again I apologize.

Hello all,
After a number of years of research, which involved getting a lot of clues
and help from Ancestral File, I'm getting ready to add my own connections to
those lines where I have information. Before I do, I'd like to get in touch
with those researchers who have entered data on relatives of mine, so that
we won't be adding at cross purposes, which might lead to even more errors
that AF already has:)
So far I've been able to find relatively recent addresses (within the past
2-3 years) for several, but not all. One person I know is deceased, but the
others are still a mystery. If anyone knows current addresses, phone numbers
or email addresses for the following please let me know -
Mark SPENCER - last known address (1992) Kirkland AFB, NM
Elaine BEESON KIRK - last known address (1983) Fallon, NV

Subject: Cleary
What do you have to share? My grandmother was Elizabeth Jane Cleary, and I
believe she was born in Fond Du Lac Wisconsin about 1869. If I have the
right
Clearys, her father was Michael Cleary, and her mother Bridget, both were
born
in Ireland, he in 1830, she in 1840. Their first daughter Katy, was born in
New York about 1866, leading me to think they probably came over about 1865
or
66, all other children were born in Wisconsin, Ellen, in 1867, Lizzie, in
1869, this is who I believe is my grandmother. There was also a Therese
born
about 1873, a Michael, who was born in 72, and an Eddie who was born in 74.
I
am still trying to verify that these were indeed the right Clearys. I am
getting the info off of a Soundex, for 1880. On the soundex, Claray is the
spelling, but going through the Wisconsin gendex, I found that the census
takers in that period made many many mistakes. My grandmother told me she
was
born in Wisconsin, On the census for 1910, Cook County, IL, her birth place
is
listed as Wi, and her parents were listed as being born in Ireland. There
she
lists her age as 37, which would have had her born about 1873, but I
remember
my mother saying she lied all her life about her age, and her true age would
have made her older than my grandfather, Maurice C. McMahon, which I am
sure
she would not want known. My mother was born in 1907, and her name was
Helen, which is another name for Ellen. Her Godparents were listed as
Michael
and Bridget Cleary, and she named her first child Kathryn. So, the Michael
and Bridget Cleary from Fond Du Lac, seem to fit the family. If you have
any
information that you think would help me please let me know. Betty Martin

Gertrude Webber, 86, church member
BIRMINGHAM- Gertrude N. Webber (Nee CLARY; 86; of Birmingham, died Monday Dec.
14, 1998, at Kingston of Vermilion, following a lingering illness.
She was born Aug.27, 1912, in Florence Township, and moved to Birmingham in
1963. She was a 1930 graduate of Birmingham High school, and was a member of
the Erie County Championship basketball Team from 1929-1930.
Mrs. Webber was a member of Birmingham United Methodist church, where she was
a member and former treasurer of the United Methodist Women, and assisted with
church supper and the Harvest festivals. She was also a member of the 12
O'clock Club in Birmingham. In 1950, she was matron of Wakeman Chapter 460,
Order of Eastern Star, now know as Halcyon Chapter 347, O.E.S; Collins. She
enjoyed cooking and baking.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years; Karl; daughter Carolyn Beam and
Beverly Tenney; both of Birmingham; four grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her
parents, mark E. and Edith (Butcher) Clary, sister Elizabeth Kothe; and
brothers George, mark, Elmer, Clifford, and Harold Clary.
Friends may call Friday from 2 PM to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm at the Gerber-smith
funeral Home, 16 Cooper Street. Wakeman, where Halcyon Chapter 347 will
conduct a memorial service at 7 PM. Friends may also call Saturday from 10
am. until the time of services at 11 am at the Birmingham United Methodist
Church 15018 South Street, with the Rev. Jan Sprauge, pastor officiating.
Burial will be in Birmingham Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to the church.
At this point I have found little info on my Great-Great Grandmother,
Minerva Arminta McClary and nothing about her parents, John Wesley McClary
of Kent County Maryland and Annie Delaney of Chester, Maryland.
Minnie [Minerva] was born 27 March 1875 in Indiana. She married first to
Joel Clark [of which I know nothing] and then James F. Nelson.
Minnie died 20 January 1920 in Versailles, Connecticut. I do have a copy
of her death record.
Minnie and Joel had one son, William Joseph Clark, born 26 January 1896 in
Kent County Churchill, Maryland.
I would love to hear from anyone who see anything that looks familar and
would gladly share any info that I have.
Sue
to all who helped last night,
more information on Desideria (Désirée Clary)
Desideria was the daughter to the merchant Francois Clary and Rose somis.
1794 Desideria got engaged with Napoleon Bonarparte. Two years later the
engagement was broken by Napoleon and Desideria became fiance to general
Duphot (Something which she later on denied!). Duphot got killed in a street
fight and on the summer 1798 Désirée got married to Jean Baptiset
Bernadotte. After a brilliant career (as well in the army as in the civilian
life) Bernadotte was brought to Sweden to become king.
Désirée became crown princess. In 1811, 9:th Jan. she arrived to Sweden, but
as she disliked the cold weather in Sweden she soon returned to France.
She became queen of Sweden in 1818, ut she didn't go to Sweden until 1823.
She was crowned 1829 and became a widow in 1844. She lived her last year of
her life in a withdrawn and isolated way. Many times she stried to get back
to Paris. In 1853 she came as far as Karlskrona, where she regretted her
decision and went back to Stockholm. In 1860, 17:th of Dec. she died 83
years old at Stockholm's Castle after a visit to the opera.

Taken From "A Little Book of Irish Family Names" by Ida Grehan:
Under the entry for CLARKE;
"This name has the same remote origins in Ireland, England and Scotland.
The Latin word 'clericus' originally meant clergyman and then came to mean
clerk or scholar. In Irish, the word 'cleireach' was anglicised in
translation to CLARKE. Until the end of the 19th century, the names CLEARY
and CLARKE were interchangeable in some parts of the country...."
The explanation continues, along with an illustration of the family shield.
