It took me a while, but I finally got to the local FHL and checked the LDS
Library catalog for CLARY books. There are, in fact, 22 books in the catalog
that refer to CLARYs, and yes, the Rowland book is one of them. Therefore,
everyone who can't wait for an attempt at a reprint is free to go to their
local LDS Family History Center, send off $3.75 for a short term loan and
have a month to search to their heart's content. Of course, if everybody who
expressed interest in reprinting the book did so, the last person on the
list might have quite a wait, but I understand that extra copies are made of
an item in demand. If you'd rather, you can also go to your local public
library and request the book on Interlibrary Loan. Charges vary, but as I
recall, I paid less than $5 when I ordered it a few years ago. If you're
REALLY in a hurry, catch the next plane to DC, as there are copies available
in a couple of libraries there. Hey, just a little attempt at humor there. I
know very few of us have those options.
Some of the other titles I found in the catalog include "Clary Genealogical
Research, [ca. 1677-1982]" by Judith Clary (apparently self-published in
1992) and "The Clary Family in the new State of Illinois" by Clarence
William Clary, b. 1892 (also apparently self-published in 1970). The latter
lists Rowlands as descendants. Mr. Clary also wrote "Historical and
Biographical sketch of the Clary, Cleary, MacCleary, MacCleery, McCleary,
McCleery family" (the man was certainly thorough!). This is described as a
typewritten manuscript made in 1960.
Alas, two other items of great interest are not available on microfilm.
"Family Connections" by A.D. Clary is a two volume set published in 1986 and
1993. "Clary Family History" by James H. Sharpe is of uncertain date,
perhaps 1990. This one includes BROWNs, so I am doubly disappointed at not
being able to get it. If anyone is planning a trip to Salt Lake City, I'll
pay for photocopies of either of these.
Several other items are genealogies of other families, with CLARY
intermarriage. No way to say without looking at them how many CLARYs are
included, but each is probably worth a peek.
Like any good librarian, I've looked up the references, now it's up to the
patrons to carry on from there. I did order a couple of these for my own
research, and I'll report how useful they are when I've had a chance to
study them.
One more note. I also checked the AGLL microforms catalog. All right,
they're calling themselves Heritage Quest these days, but old habits die
hard. The Rowland book is not in their list, but Clarence Clary's
"Historical and Biographical etc." is, which means it can be rented or
purchased by AGLL members. The LDS library does not sell copies of its
films.

I know I'm pretty far behind on answering this, but I've been out doing a
lot of research lately, some of which will be in my next response. Way back
the end of March, Vikkigray posted a question about my 2nd great-granduncle
Isaac Brown CLARY. It took me a little while to remember where I'd seen that
exact list of Isaac's children before, but I finally located it on
Broderbund's World Family Tree vol. 4, #1437. The reason I know the exact
source is that Isaac was a begetter of biblical proportions, and I have
never seen two lists of his kids that matched exactly. Part of the problem
was his penchant for marrying widows with ready-made families, but as the
last of nine children, perhaps he was just used to hand-me-downs.
While I agree that Isaac is covered quite adequately in the Rowland book
(far better than his next older sister, my great-great-grandmother Evvilina
CLARY, but I suppose it was to leave me something to do:), my real interest
is in their mother, Elizabeth BROWN. Years ago I ran across a note by
another researcher that she was a cousin of the John BROWN of Harper's
Ferry. This would make her father John Brown, brother of Owen Brown, known
as Old Brown, and a rabid Abolitionist in his own right. I've never been
able to locate the person who submitted the information on Elizabeth to the
IGI. If anyone here knows how to reach Elaine B. Kirk, I would love to get
in touch with her. I admit Elizabeth wasn't born a CLARY, but she was the
mother of a number of CLARYs and is of some interest.
Isaac was named for her family, and apparently a staunch defender of the
Union himself as he served not once, but twice in the Union Army, once in a
IA unit and again in the 13th KS Volunteers, where he rose to the rank of
sergeant. I spent a lot of time in the National Archives the last time I was
in Washington, DC, poring over the pension files of various CLARYs and their
brother-in-law, George W. LEWIS, Evvilina's husband. Isaac was also
apparently active in the Grand Army of the Republic, though I've not yet
found if there are records of the KS group still in existence. George was
proud enough of his Civil War service to have his unit engraved on his
tombstone. If anyone else is looking into the military records of the IA-KS
CLARYs, I'd love to hear from you.

If the Rowland book becomes available, I will buy one.
My Grandmother was Etta Falby Clary. She married Benjamin Franklin
Jackson. They lived and died in Lipan, Hood County Texas and are buried
in the Baptist Cemetery there. I will correspond.

You're right about the labor and cost involved, as I've copied large
segments of it from time to time myself (naturally, for my own personal use
and study, as the law states, but that would apply to all of us, I'd
assume). I always turned the book so that both facing pages would copy at
the same time on 8.5"x11" paper. You have to be careful on the index pages
because they have less margin, but it works on the rest of the book. I'd be
happy to pay for a full copy, though.
Getting rights to a reprint, or an electronic format reproduction, if
possible, might be more feasible. Heaven knows, there are enough vanity
presses involved in the genealogy market, so we shouldn't have trouble
finding one. I believe Linda mentioned something about this in an earlier
letter on this thread. I'd be happy to share in the cost if it could be
arranged, though I have no particular contacts, either personal or
professional. I am a semi-retired librarian, so at least I can offer to so
research.

I have spoke to the Rowland son and have his address and phone #. I'll be
happy to call him or if someone else wants to I'll send the info.

Let all who say they want it deposit the money wherever is detemined. Pay the
money before anybody spends the time copying it for you. That's business.

Count me in for a Clary Book by the Rowlands. I have one somewhere but can't
find it since we moved 5 years ago. I don't think I loaned it out....it may
still be packed away in a box. I know a couple of other people who want the
book also.
