Hi, I'm looking for any information on Margaret Cleary & her husband Daniel
McKnight who were both born in Ireland(place unknown). They had son Patrick
b. 1836 who immigrated to Canada between 1837-1860. Patrick settled in
Ottawa Ontario Canada. I don't know any more about Margaret or Daniel except
that they were probably Catholic and if they had any more children.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. please e-mail me at

Thanks to all of you who answered my query about Daniel Clary and
Eleanor Deveron's family. While I still can't find a direct, provable
connection to my Rachel Clary, b. 1767, at least I have some idea of who
to follow as her father. I have never seen William Clary listed in the
Rowan records but will keep trying.
I did find alot of mentions of Lt.Col. Daniel Clary, the SC Loyalist.
Apparently only son Vachel followed in his Loyalist leanings and he
served under Daniel as a Captain. If anyone wants, I'll post what I
found.

Both Clary and Armstrong were names quite common in NE NC from the 1700s.I
am searching for my Clary ancestry in Perquimans and Pasquotank counties area,
and in the contiguous area of VA - Sussex, Nansemond counties area. I can't
get back of Penelope Nixon Clary, born 1827, who 2nd married Charles Bailey
Brothers, born 1821.
I am also interested in migrations of NE NC families to the west. Most went
west to TN-KY or south; but a few actually turned MW to the Ohio valley area
and beyond
I am wondering if there is some evidence if those you are interested in
went from VA. Or, if the book had anything about this.
Thank you, Merlin Berry
I am still looking for information about my Elizabeth Jane Cleary who was born
in Wisconsin in October 1873, she married Maurice C. McMahon and lived in
Chicago, IL until her death in 1946. I wish I knew more about her family.

I am a descendant of John Clary, Jr and Rhoda Armstrong. I have quite a bit
of Clary information. At one time I had the Rowland book, "Clary Genealogy, 4
Early American Lines and Related Families". However we moved 5 years ago and
I haven't found it since then....I know it's packed in a box somewhere...at
least I hope so. I sent the info to the Clary website and I thought someone
else was going to follow thru on seeing about getting the book republished,
though I can't remember who. There is another book that mentions the Clary
family in Illinois. It is Edgar Lee Masters', The Sangamon. I have an
original of this book and it has a drawing of the gravestone of John Clary,
Jr. in the Old Concord Cemetery in Menard Co., IL. I believe a paperback
version of The Sangamon can be ordered from Barnes and Noble...maybe Borders.
I would like to hear from descendants of my Clary line and am certainly
willing to share all the information I have.

To CLARY Researchers:
I cannot help connect the "Lily Bell BATTERTON" with the CLARY family
that someone asked for help with, but I can tell you a bit about the CLARY
Boys" that was mentioned in the posting. I am sure others on the list could
do this also!
The Clary's Grove Boys, " a rather rough and rowdy gang in the
neighborhood" are mentioned on pg. 79 pg. the book by Star & Ralph ROWLAND on
the CLARY Family.
The founder of Clary's Grove, Illinois, a pioneer settlement, was John
(Jack) CLARY6 Jr, ( John 1,2 ; Daniel 3; William 4; John S. 5) b 2 Jan 1793
Sumner Co., Tenn.; d 5 Mar 1860 Menard Co., Ill. He md 1812 Rhoda ARMSTRONG
in White Co., Tenn. who was b 1794 NC, d 1840. They were parents of 12
children. John md 2nd Mrs. Mary COGDALL.
There are 2 pages of information on this family in the book (I copied a
part of this book several years ago). I will quote part of it about Lincoln.
"In 1831, at age 22, Abraham Lincoln came to this area as the manager of
a general store in New Salem (about 3 miles east of Clary's Grove). During the
next few years, while working at a variety of jobs, young Lincoln developed
close friendships with the CLARY, ARMSTRONG, and GREENE families with whose
history we are now concerned. His athletic prowess led to his acceptance by
the CLARY's Grove Boys, a rather rough and rowdy gang in the neighborhood. The
future president built many of the fences needed by John CLARY, Jr. and his
neighbors, and as was the custom he stayed in their homes while working for
them.
"One of the earliest-known legal documents in Lincoln's handwriting
(quoted in A. Lincoln, Prairie lawyer) is a 1833 summons signed by Bowling
GREEN as Justice of the Peace and endorsed by J. CLARY as Commission of
Sangamon County."
The next paragraph says to see the index for other links to Lincoln, but
I did not make a copy of the index. This was a difficult book to make copies
from as the printing extended into the middle fold. I copied about 50 pages
of this book but did not get home with the title page when I did this so can't
quote the title exactly either!
From other sources I understand that some of these CLARY Grove's Boys
traveled to Washington, DC to attend celebration when Lincoln became
president. I think this reference to them is in a book of poetry named The
Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters where each poem is about a
different person in the graveyard. I read it years ago but do not have a copy
of the book. I would guess it is available at any library?
I do have another poem from this book named; "Hannah ARMSTRONG" (who md
John (Jack) Armstrong, brother of Rhoda) on pg. 453 of the CLARY book
mentioned above. It is famous because she wrote a letter to Pres. Lincoln to
discharge her sick boy, Doug, during the Civil War. When that didn't work she
went to Washington herself to see Abe.
Then, of course, one of the CLARY children was named: Abraham Lincoln
CLARY, b 1834. Here are the other CLARY children:
a) Royal A. b 1813 Tenn.
b) John Allen b 1815 Tenn.
c) Bowling b & d 1817 Tenn.
Rest of children born Illinois
d) Robert C. b 1819
e) Zachariah b 1821
f) William Carrol b 1823
g) Thomas b 1825
h) Martha Jane b 1827
i) James S. b 1829
j) Hugh Armstrong b 1831
k) Abraham Lincoln b 1834
l) Henry b 1836; died age 12
This is probably well known to many on the list, but it may be new to
some. I know lots of discussion went back & forth some time ago about getting
this CLARY book republished. How is that project coming now? JRC

Am posting my line in hopes of finding parents of Agrippa V. Clary. Based on

I have more current information but I don't know where it fits in. My
grandmother was Mary Emma Clary. Her parents died and she was raised by
an aunt and uncle who also had a Mary Clary. Mary Emma married John
Batterton and lived in St Peterburg, Ill. They had three children who
died of smallpox I think. Then they had LeRoy Batterton, Mrytle
Batterton, Florence Batterton and Lily Bell Batterton (my grandmother).
LeRoy and his wife (Libby) had two daughters, Rachel (she died at about
13) and Doris (who married a man ??? Crawford). Doris Crawford taught
at a college or University in Missouri and her husband was a farmer.
My Grandmother Lily Bell Batterton went by Lillian. She told stories of
an Uncle Jasper Rutledge who ate horseradish at a family dinner because
he thought it was mashed potatoes. Jasper was related to Ann Rutledge
the sweetheart of Abe Lincoln. She also said their was a group of
rather wild boys she was related to called the 'Clary Boys" Does this
sound familiar to anyone?

OK he was the son of Benjamin Clary and Eleanor, b. ca 1766 in Baltimore Co
MD (probably part of todays Carroll Co.) he was married 20 May 1793 to
Delphia Penn dau of Edward PENN. had issue: Polly, Eleanor, Delilah, Annaca,

Benjamin was son of John Clary and Elizabeth Haly.

Well the Daniel Clary you refer to (married to Eleanor Deveron died in
Newberry Co SC. So yes the family did move south to the Carolinas, more of
them went to KY and TENN and then northwest to IND, OHIO, Ill.
THe family that moved to Rowen Co though, was William Donovan CLARY, son of
John Clary and Elizabeth Haly.
(above Daniel's brother)...his son John died in Rowan Co 1805, this JOhn had
a son DAniel b. 19 DEc 1774,d. 1832 Rowan Co. other children in this line
were Daniel b. 1748, Ashford Dowden b. ca. 1752, James ? b. 1754, Ann b. ca.
1755 married Jesse Griffith in Rowan Co 18 Feb 1772. Some info on this line
is in the Rowland's genealogy on the family..

Is anyone on the list descended from or familiar with the children of
Daniel Clary and Eleanor Deveron? I'm reduced to ruling out suspects in
my quest for Rachel Clary's parents. Her third male child was named
Daniel and there was at least one Daniel Clary in Rowan Co., NC in the
1780s. Did any branch of the Prince George Co., MD Clarys go to NC?
