A big thank you to Mary and Barbara for responding to my question regarding
Missouri Clarksons. It is logical that my Thomas Clarkson, b. abt 1810, may
have been related to these Clarksons. It appears that Thomas is a common
family name. Perhaps the missing clues are in Kentucky or Virginia. It is
interesting that one Thomas was married to Martha Patterson, and my Thomas
named his first daughter, b. 1847, Martha.
I have never determined where Thomas is buried. His wife was buried in
Tipton, Moniteau Co, Missouri, with her brother's family. Why wasn't she
buried with her husband who died 25 years earlier? His will can be viewed
online at the Missouri archives site:

While you are on the subject of Clarksons in Missouri, I am descended from
Thomas Clarkson b. 1810 in Virginia or Kentucky. He married Jane (Woodrum)
Jordan about 1846, and they lived In St. Louis, Missouri. He died about 5
Sep 1859. Jane had family in Moniteau Co, Missouri, and St. Clair Co,
Illinois. It is likely that she met Thomas Clarkson, her second husband,
either in St. Louis or while living with her brother in Tipton, Moniteau Co,
Missouri. Clarksons lived in adjoining counties including Boone County,
Missouri.
I would appreciate knowing the relationships of other Clarksons in Missouri
so that I can determine if they are related. Thomas was in St. Louis by
1850. It is likely that Jane was his second wife. If there was a first
marriage, it may have been around 1835, possibly in Kentucky The only
Clarkson that I have found in St. Louis prior to Thomas was Robert, a
carpenter.

Hello Clarksons-
I seek your help in finding some "Younger" information that may be recorded in a Clarkson Bible. My g-g-g-g-grandfather and his spouse, Charles Younger and Mariah Burnley, died in abt 1833 in Pendleton County, KY, probably as a result of a cholera outbreak. His estate sale record indicates that A. Clarkson purchased a "bible" and "one lot of potters ware."
Census records and Missouri death certificates have provided the following:
Emily Clarkson (daughter of Anselm Clarkson) died July 23, 1920 with the informant being Walter Clarkson (possibly her brother) of 4650 Pennsylvania Ave, St. Louis, MO.
John G. Clarkson (son of Anselm Clarkson) died June 30, 1920 with the informant being Agnes Clarkson (probably his daughter) of 4650 Pennsylvania Ave, St. Louis, MO.
Wesley C. Clarkson (son of Anselm Clarkson) of 1627 Glen Court (probably 1627 Glenechort Dr.), Wellston, MO died Sept 26, 1920 with the informant being Belle Clarkson of Chesterfield, MO.
My guess is, if the Bible is still around, it would likely reside with one of the descendants of these three. Since they died in the 20's, I'm still a few generations from those who may have kept the Bible and have genealogical interests.
Any help is appreciated...

Dear Clarkson cousins,
Wish I could help Mark Younger figure out where the Bible is, but I am
thrilled to have found out what happened THIS Anselm Clarkson, the younger brother
of my g3grandfather David Smith Clarkson.
Anselm was born c1806 in Bourbon County, KY, son of David Clarkson and his
wife Phoebe Smith. Moved with his family to Pendleton Co. KY c1816. Anselm
married a cousin Nancy P. Clarkson in Pendleton Co. KY in October 1830. He may
well have bought the Younger Bible and "one lot of potters ware" in 1833
(young married couple always need stuff, even back then!).
In 1841, Anselm and his family "went out" to Missouri, eventually settling in
Dade County. During the Civil War, Anselm and his family went to Arkansas,
but returned to St. Louis County--home of other Clarkson relatives--in the
late 1870s.
Anselm, widowed, is listed in 1880 St. Louis census (Carondelet Twp.),
with these children (another daughter, Elizabeth, may have died by then):
Mary B., born 1834
Emily A., born 1836
John G., born 1846
Wesley C., born 1848
Thus, you've "filled in the death dates" for several of Anselm's children!
Agnes Clarkson may have been Lula Agnes Clarkson (b 1885), daughter of John
G. Clarkson and his wife Frances Smith.
The Walter Clarkson mentioned may have been son of Wesley C. Clarkson (Walter
was born in 1899).
Another Clarkson cousin--Charles Smith Clarkson (died 1872 in St. Louis
Co.)--owned a great deal of land near Chesterfield MO, so it is likely the Belle
Clarkson mentioned is one of his descendants, since most of the other Clarksons
had died out by then. Will see if I can track them down.
Good detective work, folks! Thanks,
Nancy B. Bowen

Clarkson cousins,
I'm posting this series of e-mails that pertains to both the Clarkson family
and the Younger family (both of which I descend from, but not this group, I
don't think). My cousin, Mark sent these along to see if anyone in our
group has any answers or further speculatins. This message may be too long
for rootsweb. The bottom e-mail is the original one and notes it as such.
Some rootsweb lists allow attachments now and I hope this is one as the
estate sale info is attached. Please copy Mark Younger when you reply.
Thanks everyone.

Subject: FW: Bible of Charles Younger purchased by A. Clarkson in 1833
Hello Bobbi (I saw you're the Clarkson DNA administrator) and Wilma-
I trust all is well. As you can see from the (lengthy) string of emails
below and the attached scan of one of the EE Barton papers, I've taken
interest into the whereabouts and possible contents of a Bible.
To help me keep track of the Charles's, I've labeled them as follows:
Generation-Name
1-Joshua
2-Peter
3-Charles (a) married Mariah Burnley, both died in 1833 (probably from
Cholera)
4-Charles (b) married Margaret Laughlin in 1839 and died in 1863 (Civil War)
5-Charles (c) married Sarah Perry (and later Margaret Limerick) and in 1939
6-Charles (d) married Sarah Flanagan (and later Nellie Eastridge) and died
in 1971
Questions:
-Why would A. Clarkson have an interest in a Bible?
-Did the Bible bought by A. Clarkson in 1833 have any "Younger" family info
in it?
-Does the Bible still exist? If yes, where?
-Why no mention of, the then 13-yr old, Charles (b) throughout the estate
references and estate sale?
-Is Charles (a) and Charles (b) really the father and grandfather of my
great-great grandfather, Charley?
-Where was Charles Younger (b) from 1833 to 1839 when he married Margaret
Laughlin?
-DNA aside.how likely is it that one of the Charles's is
illegitimate?.especially since the name Charles seems to have some
significance.
I really don't expect anyone to have answers.just wanted to share them with
you as I prepare to post something on additional message boards in case you
have an interest.
Blessings to you and yours,
Mark Younger

Mark: The Missouri Death Certs online are so helpful. I've solidified a lot
of connections there.
As to asking for Clarkson help, I think that's a great idea. I would be
specific in my Subject line, as per the subject of this email. You can
broaden your request later, if you don't get a response.
You might also join the Clarkson genweb list and see if there is anyone out
there watching those emails who might help. I'd also put a note on the
Pendleton County and any other County lists where the families lived. [I
left a note once on the Greene Co., MO, county site and within a few days
had a response from a cousin whose aunt (a second cousin once removed, I
think) remembered her grandmother telling stories about a sister (my gr
grandmother) and had a sack of photos my gr grandmother had sent her sister
over the years 1870-1910. There were fantastic photos of my grandmother and
her sisters and parents that my branch of the family had never seen. They
gave me the photos! You just never know what you'll find.]
Good Luck!

I think I misspoke on Anselm Clarkson, son of David. I think I said A.E.
Clarkson, and that was wrong, he was Anselm (Ancil, Ansel, etc.) Clarkson.
David Clarkson and Elizabeth Clarkson were both children of Anselm Clarkson
of Bourbon Co., KY. Elizabeth Clarkson m. James Jo hnson Jan 29, 1779 in
Louisa Co, VA. Jean Moore Johnson was their eldest daughter.

Wow! .just like that you've helped fill-in some of my info or, at the very
least, provided some clues. I didn't know Wm Burnley married Jean Moore
Johnson.
You're right, my surname traces back to the Charles Younger you mention from
the 1830 census. Mariah Burnley (supposedly William's daughter) was his wife
and died around 1833 along with Charles as the result of the cholera
epidemic. My lineage surrounds the "10 to 15 year old male" in this same
census, which means he's the child of someone other than Mariah Burnley.
William Burnley took care of settling the estate of Charles and Mariah
(according to docs provided by a Pendleton County lawyer, E.E. Barton, who
recorded family research in the early 1940's) and may have taken the young
teen, Chas Younger, as part of his family.but who knows? I've found Wm
Burnley in the 1820, 1830, and 1850 census records, but that's it. By 1850,
the teen listed in the 1830 census has married Margaret Laughlin on Dec 9,
1839.
I'm new to genealogy and don't subscribe to any sites that cost money, so
I'm very interested in anyone's info (accurate or not J) on George Younger.
I've been fortunate to connect with a "Younger" family historian and will
likely forward your info to her.she is probably interested in your
Burnley/Clarkson info.
Also, I did a quick census look for Clarkson's and saw where
Ancil/Ancel/Ansom Clarksons move from KY to MO with possible Clarksons
showing up in St. Louis in the 1830 census.
Enjoy your summer and thanks again for the info!

Hi:
I see a Charles Younger in the 1830 census living next to William Burnley
(who was married to Jean Moore Johnson, whose maternal grandfather was
Anselm Clarkson). Charles Youner married to Mariah Burnley 14 Feb 1828 in
Pendleton or Grant Co., KY. If this is your ancestor, then Charles Younger
and A. Clarkson were cousins by marriage. I suspect A.E. Clarkson was your
man at that date. He was about 35 and probably still setting up his
household. His father David Clarkson is listed 4 away from Charles Younger
in the 1830 census.
I am also curious whether you know anything of Mariah Burnley's family or
how long she lived. I wonder if she is William Burnley's daughter by a prior
marriage. The 1820 census shows him with 3 daughters, but his will lists
only 2. William was born ca 1775-80 and married Jean Moore Johnson in
Pendleton Co., KY, in 1806. So, Mariah would have been from a prior
marriage. She could be a niece or some thing as well, I suppose.
There is someone who has taken the research back to George Younger b. 1665
Germany and beyond that in Scotland listed in the OneWorldTree section of
Ancestry.com. I'm not sure if this is in the free section. If you do not
have a subscription, I'll sent you the info if you don't have it. That's an
odd route to move from Scotland to Germany, then on to the US. You never
know about someone else's research.
Certainly it is a long-shot to look for the Bible through the Clarkson
family but I think I would try too. I am amazed at what I have found just
because I looked.
Have you checked sources in KY? I don't think that A.E. Clarkson ever left
KY. By the way, it's that time of year, I'll be checking my computer only
sporatically for the next week or so.

Thanks Crystal- I recently became interested in my family history as the
result of a breakthrough from one of these message boards that may take my
surname back to the late 1700's. Evidently, one of my 'Younger' ancestors
died in 1833, possibly the result of a cholera epidemic in KY leaving
several questions about his parents. When his estate was settled, 'one lot
of potters ware' and a 'bible' were purchased by 'A. Clarkson.'
It was suggested that my ancestor was a potter since the estate included
other potters ware. Perhaps A. Clarkson knew my relative? Or, perhaps he
just found an outstanding deal on some cool pots? :) Anyway, I'm most
interested in what happened to the Bible. I know it's a long shot, but I'm
hoping there may be additional 'Younger' information in the Bible that has
been transcribed somewhere. Any thoughts?
Let me know if you have any interest in the docs that list A. Clarkson...I
could scan and se nd if you like.
Thanks again.
Mark
PS- I'm about to go off-line and may not be back on until Sunday eve.

Hi Mark:
You caught me on the computer. I have 3 possibles that I can suggest:
1) Anselm Clarkson (Jr.), b. ca 1736 VA, died in Bourbon Co., KY, in 1817.
He was the son of Anselm Clarkson (1710-1762 of VA). Although he did not
live in Pendleton Co., some of his children did and he may have made
extensive visits. Anselm (Jr.) and his sibling Clarksons moved to Bourbon Co
before 1790. None of his children were A. Clarkson.
2) Anselm Clarkson (Jr.)'s son David moved to Pendleton Co from Bourbon Co.,
ca 1810. He had a son Anselm Clarkson b. ca 1795.
3) Anselm Clarkson (Jr.)'s younger brother Julius Clarkson (1749-1831), had
a son A. E. Clarkson, also Anselm (1783-1863). I have only seen A. E.
referred to with both initials. He married Mary Trabue in 1807 Woodford Co.,
KY. A.E.'s son, A.G. Clarkson b. ca 1820 who m. Amanda Garnett ca 1839.
Depending on the dates of your correspondence, maybe you c an figure out the
most likely. Hope this helps. I'd like very much to know more about the
correspondence.
