Subject: [DBY] WESSINGTON BURIALS 1858-1863
Hi list,
burials from Wessington. The burial register begins in 1858 and
apart from one person buried from Brackenfield in 1874 ,right up to 1879 all
entries are for Wessington. Theres mention of a CLARKSON burial. On WDYTHA
on Jeremy CLARKSON they opened with a pedigree showing the HOLE family of
Wooley Moor, not a million miles away. Although they concentrated on another
branch I wonder if the CLARKSON mentioned is connected.
Any way I digress.

JOSEPH W. CLARKSON, born near Charleston, S. C., August 10, 1829; moved to St. Lawrence Co., N. Y., in 1840; lived there nine years; came to Racine, May 9, 1849; farmed for two years; returned to Racine and engaged as a ship-carpenter. He married. April 23, 1853, Miss Sarah Morris, of Morristown, St. Lawrence Co., N. Y.; they had six children- George, Orville, John, Mary, Sarah, Ida.
Did I share this response from the Amherst County Historical Society?
from the Director of the Amherst County Museum and Historical
Society -- The Museum does not have a Clarkson Family genealogy book. She
did find a reference to Clarkson family Members in a History of Albemarle
County. Peter Clarkson bought land in Albemarle County in 1788. There were
references to Peter, John, William, James, and Manoah. The book indicated
that the relationships were not well documented, but John, William, and
James were thought to be brothers, sons of a David Clarkson. Peter and
Manoah were thought also to be brothers in the same family, but it is
uncertain. John had some connection with Amherst County. The Director
thought you might check with the Albemarle County Historical Society
(www.abemarlehistory.org) since the Clarksons were definitely located there.
I found that James was a Revolutionary War soldier from Amherst County. A
Catherine Clarkson (b. June 1760) married Thomas Jones (Oct 17, 1780) also a
soldier. In support of her pension application after his death, a Mrs.
Frances Carter, who testified that she knew Catherine since infancy and that
Thomas Jones had stopped at her home for breakfast on his return from his
first tour in the militia, just before the birth of one of her sons,
submitted a page town from her family Bible listing birth dates of her
eldest children. On the back is "John Clarkson" (no indication of why the
name was written there). Thomas and Catherine lived in Nelson County,
between Albemarle and Amherst Counties. It may help you to know that
Amherst County was originally part of Albemarle and that Nelson was part of
Amherst and therefore originally Albemarle.
Hope this can help someone, Mary in South Dakota (descendant of James
CLARKSON, b 1749 England d 1824 Essex County, VA)
