Are you refering to the Joel Cook who would be having children of age to
marry by 1800? My ancestor was one of his daughters. In 1851 she files for
a pension from her husband's (James Clarkson) service in the War of 1812 and
she says that John Taylor and John Ryley (Riley) were both at her wedding in
person, and they gave depositions. Do either of these names ring any bells
with you?

Carol.
Thanks for telling me where Craney Island farm was located I have wondered exactly where it was. I know where the Baldwin house is as I pass it from time to time.
The Reuben G (Gardner) Meredith that you speak of from Canterbery was my great grandfather and I know Canterbery quite well as I spent much time there growing up. Reuben G Meredith was the son of William Meredith of Louisa County
and the nephew of the Reuben who married Mary Clarkson. The children to Elisha and Anne Clopton Meredith were: Elizabeth Cocke, John, William, Sarah Ann, Elisha, Robert, Reuben, Samuel, and Thomas.
William Meredith married Sarah Ford Gardner and John's daughter married Thomas Gardner. I was under the impression that Sarah and Thomas were raised at
Avondale which is near Craney Island farm but I am not so sure now as I understand that Thomas built Avondale and their parents don't seem to be buried in the Gardner cemetery. There is very little that I have been able to learn about the Gardner's.
Mattie Ellen Brown Trube in her book Your Family and Mine traces the Meredith's back to Thomas Meredith and his patent of 1370 acres in the area of Mechanicsville in 1661. She placed a Historical Marker near where the original house
was along Route 360 just Northeast of Mechanicsville in about 1970.

Al, thanks for replying.
My husband's great-great grandfather was Reuben Meredith. I am somewhat
confused location wise. Somewhere I picked up a posting that said Mary
Lucinda Clarkson was born at Craney Island, Hanover Co in 1804. More
likely she died at Craney Island since it belonged in her husband's
family.
