Notes for William Clarkson Sr.
William was born in Virginia. Through a process of elimination, I
believe that his father was David Clarkson. David married Elizabeth
"Patty" Redmon in Goochland Co in 1751. According to the Douglas
Register a son, William, was born to this union on Sep 25, 1774 and was
Baptized Jan 3, 1775. Between 1800 and 1810 the family moved to
Kentucky. By 19 May 1812 he bought 120 acres on Long Run, Shelby Co.,
from Caleb and Larkin Martin of Jessamine Co. for $600. Then on 10 Oct
1831 he bought another 44 acres from William Taylor of Oldham Co. for
$110. He moved his family to Jennings Co., IN and sold both tracts of
land to Hugh Galey in 1834 for $1124. Barbary signed this deed and her
attorney, James Whitaker, "talked to her privately and apart from her
husband" to make sure she was not being pressured into selling - a
beginning for women's rights. On 9 Feb 1837, he was an original land
purchaser in Jennings Co. where they settled on Graham Creek. When he
died, his inventory consisted of a clock, a little spinning wheel, 18
yards of carpet and the usual household and farm items. Barbara
received 4 acres and the brick dwelling house. However, she died
between 10 Aug 1841 and 4 Oct 1841. Her son Henry was appointed
administer and he gave her inventory as a horse, colt and household goods.

My information says that Maria Elizabeth McNaught was the daughter of Robert McNaught, a harness and saddle maker who married Elizabeth Seeber, and it seems to be in Chicago. I don't have any documentation, just some hand written papers about Roy, and Nester, Charles and Maria's children. How can I get your E-Mail address so we can correspond privately?

Charles Louis Clarkson and Maria Elizabeth McNaught were my Great Grandparents. Nester and Mabel Brookbank Ott were my grandparents.
Charles and Maria had 6 children. On the Census for 1900 they listed only 5 living. Charles L, Jr., Nester, Ralph, Grace and Roy.(Not Ray) However, I'm in E-Mail contact with Roy's Granddaughter. I'll see what she has to say about the name.
Charles was born in Germany 6/1846 and came to USA in 1854. Prior to that I can't help. I understad that the name Clarkson was someting else originally but nobody seems to know just what it was.
I have and Aunt Naomi who is still living and is 92. She is Charles and Maria's granddaughter. She was one of my fathers Sisters.
Please keep in touch.

I've just joined this list in the hope of making a connection with my CLARKSON ancestors who came from Lincolnshire.
My ggg grandfather is Richard CLARKSON. he was born about 1800. He married Eliza TAYLOR. They had at least three children, Mary Jane, Elizabeth and my gg grandmother Maria. Richard died in 1872 and Eliza died in 1870. They are both buried in Louth.
Maria CLARKSON was born in 1840 in Great Sturton. She married Robert Allan PEDDIE in 1861 in Louth. They had ten chlidren;
including my g grandfather Crofton who was born in 1863.
Does anyone have a connection with this family?
Best wishes

Wilma,
Many of the Cark/Carkson/Clarkston families found in MO came from KY. My line
went from Halm Co, KY under the name Clarkston to Taney Co, MO under the name
Clark. While I don't see a direct connection between the line you posted and
this line, the two share a number of given names:
..............................................................................
............................................
Nancy Belle Clark 1883 KY <= moved Tanet Co, MO
(m. Robert Roberts)
Francis Marion Clarkston abt 1836 KY <= moved Taney Co, MO
(m. Nancy Clemmens)
John Clarkston abt 1808 VA <= moved Harlem Co, KY
(m. Sarah McKinney)
Thomas Clarkston abt 1785 VA
(m. Ellander Feathers / Peggy McKinney)
..............................................................................
............................................
As I said, no direct connection that I can see but perhaps there are some
clues in it for you.
Phil

Karen..Got your posting re your Thomas Clarkson...Va, to Bourbon Co., Ky, and then St. Louis. As you say there is little to no chance that this will connect with my Sampson Co., N.C. Clarksons. I have encountered the Bourbon County reference previously..As I recall that is the Paris area. I have also encountered various Clarkson surnames in the St. Louis area. My paternal gf, Alexander Wilson Clarkson, who was the youngest son of Thomas Clarkson from N.C. moved there as a young man in the early 1870s, was married there, and their first child, a boy (named Thomas) was born there. In i880 the family moved to Decatur, Illinois. There Alexander and Mary had three more children, two girls and a boy who was my father. of the four children the only one to have children was my father. When you get a chance, karen, send me your email address. I recall a Dwight Clarkson who had Clarkson family that originated in Virginia. I'll have to look up his address so I can send it along to you.!

Wilma, I would certainly help you if possible. My Thomas M. Clarkson fought in the Civil War for the South and was severely wounded at Antietam in Sept 1862. He was not a young man even when the war began. I don't know where he died, but don't believe that he lived until 1870. His father was also a Thomas Clarkson and he died in Clinton, N.C. (Sampson county) There was another Thomas M. Clarkson who was born in Mercer county, Kentucky. H e was the son of a man who had been born in England. When I encountered info on him I quickly found that he was too young to have been my ancestor. If you can pick up a line on him, maybe he moved to Missouri. Good luck Jim Clarkson
