Source: NHROCKIN-L(a)rootsweb.com Subject: [NHROCKIN] Clarkson,
Dudley, Trumbull, Clark, March/Marsh, Simpson
Is there anyone out there researhing the families of Clarkson, Dudley,
Trumbull, Clark, March/Marsh, Simpson, who might be able to help me?
I am
researching my Thomas Clarkson, possibly Thomas Richard Clarkson, who
died in
Rockingham Co NH. His will dated " 20th May 1799, I, Thomas Clarkson of
Stratham in the County of Rockinham State of New Hampshire, Taylor
[tailor]
mentions wife, Amey, and children, Richard, Mary, Anna, Elizabeth and
Hannah
Clarkson, executix, wife. witnesses Jacob Low, Henery Marsh, Nichs
Rollins,
and proved June 25th 1799.
From a very brief history of the Clarkson family written, I
believe by
Richard's daughter, Pamela, and I will give her credit for brevity sake.
Pamela [Pa-mel'-a "Mel"] says she was born, August 2, 1804 (This is why I
believe that Pamela wrote the article, as her birthdate is the only
one given
for the children of Richard). Her father, Richard Clarkson, was born,
October 2, 1782, in Stratham. Of Richard's four sisters, the oldest
married
a March/ Marsh?). Another sister married a Clark, one married a
Dudley, and
the other married a Trumball.
From the 1790 census, besides the parents, there was one son
under 16,
and four daughters, so I assume at this point that all of the children of
Thomas were born before 1790.
Pamela states that Richard Clarkson worked on a farm in Stratham
for a
man named Coker Fifield, to whom he become very much attached, and
named his
second son after him. In April 1803, Richard married Miss Mary Simpson,
daughter of William Simpson, a Revolutionary soldier. Pamela says her
Clarkson grandparents died before she was born, but she remembers her
Simpson
grandparents. She says her mother, Mary Simpson, was born in
Brentwood in
1780. I question this, as according to her brother, David's
tombstone, shows
he was born in 1785 in Durham N H (Strafford Co), and I find a William
Simson
[sic] enumerated in Durham Town in the 1790 census. David Simpson
moved to
Dixmont, Maine, and a descendant of his has written a very lenghty
article on
the Simpson family which will appear in the forthcoming issue of the
Maine
Genealogist.
Is there anyone researchng these surnames that could add a
tidbit, most
particularly on who the children of Richard married?

Hi Robyn,
While not personally having these rellies in my
family
tree, I have run into these types of "intrigues" before.
The possibilities of why people change their name when coming into another
country, are endless. For example:-
A lot of people used to name their children with a mother's surname as a
middle name, to carry on her name as well as the father's name. James,
very
well could have had a double-barrel surname of Clarkson-Smith, or his
Christian names could have been James Clarkson Smith/James Smith Clarkson
and he just decided to drop the "Smith" part of his name, maybe to start a
new life, assume a new identity maybe for family reasons.
Or another senario is, when boarding passage for Australia, his name
could
have been noted down wrongly in the passenger lists, sometimes these
records
were notoriously incorrect.
My husband has family from Wales that we were searching, in particular,
Griffith-Jones (as the surname), but try as we could, I couldn't come up
with the surname as a hyphenated surname, but I did find the birth of the
one I was looking for, by tracing back both parents names, and in Wales,
the child was registered with the Mother's surname being used for the
second
Christian name, THEN the name of Jones as Surname. Upon arriving in NZ,
however, the Christian name of Griffith and the Surname of Jones was put
together to form a hyphenated surname... whether this happened when
boarding
the vessle in the passenger lists... or later, through some fanciful
reason
or not, no one knows. It was later dropped completely, possibly because
"Jones" being such a common name, one could blend in if one "had to"
[:-)] So I hope this hasn't added more confusion to the issue.
I did a quick search of the name James Clarkson, to find that he married a
Marie M. Poulson in 1887 in NSW. Is this the same one?
On the entry, it was a James S. Clarkson...If so, note the middle
initial.....
I could find no issue from that marriage. Maybe he married again.
All the best with your search.
Kind regards,
Theresa

Hi Folks
Hoping to make contact with some descendents of a James
CLARKSON
(aka SMITH) b 1853 Lanark Scotland. James came to Australia from Scotland
in about 1887 with his younger brother David SMITH (my GGrandfather
). Why
James changed his name from SMITH to CLARKSON is very mysterious. Limited
information is that he possibly had a son Charles who married Elsie ??
Recently I made contact with an elderly cousin who definitely remembers
meeting these CLARKSON cousins who were living at Redcliffe Qld in the
1960s. If any of this seems vaguely familiar I would greatly appreciate
hearing from you.

Not long ago, I had an e-mail from ElRay Clarkson saying that I had his
Clarkson family in my WorldConnect file. I tried to answer, but the address
didn't work. So, if anyone knows this person, I would appreciate a correct
address. Since I don't have him in my files, I am sure I could use his
information.
My ancestor was John Clarkson who married Mary Webb, 1804, Shelby county,
KY. They show up as Claxton in 1810. The family was in Cooper Co. MO by
1830.

Can anyone tel me if there are Bartholomew Co IN cemetery records online or
where there are cemeteries in the Rock Ck Tp area? I am searching for the
Alexander G Clarkson wife Sarah. The family who moved to Rock Creek Tp.
about 1855. Alexander was born ca. 1822 and he and prob. died there bef.
1860 when his wife was enumerated as head of the household in Rock Ck Tp.
Elizabethtown P.O..
Sarah m. (2) 1863 to Martin Spry/e. She was born ca. 1823 (1900 census
says
b. Aug 1821) and died 16 Jan 1907 (WPA) as Sarah Spry/Sprye. The 3 children
of Alexander and Sarah were:
Amanda b. ca. 1845 and may be the one who married 1875 to John Marcum
Joshua b. ca. 1847 and may be the one who married 1869 Elizabeth Herron
Elias b. July 1849 wife in 1900 census was Arminta. Sarah was living with
son Elias at that time still in Rock Ck Tp. What cemeteries are in that
area? My 1876 Atlas shows none nearby Elizabethtown or even in Jennings Co.
Can anyone help me on this? Is anyone researching this family? I would
appreciate any tidbit.

Lou,
I am researching this family since Sarah and Martin are part of my extended
family line. Martin's son "Dudley" married one of my ancestors. I'll share
what information I have with you. Hopefully, you can fill me in on their
children as well as some of the other Clarkson's. Some of the Clarkson names
and some dates of birth I have were provided when I met with a cousin in
Elizabethtown. Marriage dates I retrieved from County records. I would love
to be able to share some additional information with her, since she was a
Clarkson - now 86 years old.

of a small cemetery in Elizabethtown called Springer. The only other small
one I can recall is "Donaldson's" very close to Elizabethtown. I know there
is at least one more.
Hope to hear from you in return. Good Luck!
