Nancy,
Phoebe Smith's sister, Mary, married a William Clarkson, so William might be
a brother to David. (See my posting to Carolyn Kent.) Julius'
granddaughter, Mary Beckley Bristow, mentioned her aged uncle David and Aunt
Mima, who had slipped into senility. I am not sure if David was a close
relative, or whether Mary used "Uncle" as a courtesy title.
Maybe we can at last unravel the tangled lines.

Carolyn,
It seems most of the early Bourbon Clarksons were from the Virginia Piedmont
(Albemarle, Orange, etc.), and they were likely related, but the connections
remain elusive.
1. The Charles Clarkson who married Elizabeth Mahan is probably NOT Charles
Smith Clarkson, s/o William Clarkson and Mary Smith (d/o Charles Smith).
Charles S., who married Charlotte Dunlap of Chambersburg, PA, moved to Boone
Co, KY, then across the Ohio, and finally to MO, where he died in 1872. The
Charles in question is likely the brother of John, whose antecedants are
unknown. This John probably was a widower when he married Agnes; there is a
1791 Bourbon marriage for John Clarkson and Catherine Hoyle, from which
union the three minor children issued. By the way, what was Agnes' maiden
name?
2. Julius Mattock Clarkson may be a cousin, but ? He died 1827 in MS at his
brother's, who may be yet another Charles, per will.
3. The Mary Clarkson who died in 1825 was the sister of my Julius. Her will
names another unmarried sister, Mourning. Their great neice, Mary Beckley
Bristow, recalled Mary's funeral thirty years later.
4. The Polly Clarkson who died in 1827 was the wife of Peter Clarkson, and
she was possibly d/o Benjamin Bedford.
5. By 1850 a Manoah Clarkson from VA had settled in Breckinridge; he may
have had a son John, who was old enough to be out on his own. Whether they
are any kin to your people, I don't know.

Julius Clarkson was born in Albemarle Co, VA in 1749 and died in
southwestern Bourbon Co, KY in 1831. He had nine children by his first
wife, Elizabeth Sandidge, and two more by his second wife, Mrs Margaret
"Peggy" Bell, widow of James Bell.
He was active in Primitive Baptist congregations in Bourbon Co.
I'm searching for Julius' parents and his relationship to other Clarksons
from VA who settled in Bourbon Co abt 1789. (Edgar Woods' History of
Albemarle is vague.) The names Anselm and David were favorites among the
family, and the line probably goes back to Peter or David Clarkson in New
Kent before 1700.
I have traced Julius' descendants through most of his great-grandchildren,
and some lines beyond that.
Any leads appreciated. Thanks.
