I've "rescued" an old photograph of Laura BALDWIN taken at the H. Hulbert
Studio in Armada, MI. Likely taken in the early 1900's, Laura appears to be
in her 60's or 70's at the time. Notes on back include "For the Girls" and
"Dad's sister". Based on limited research I was able to gather the
following information regarding Laura and her family:
Laura E. CRUTTENDEN BALDWIN was b. 16 Nov 1833 in Granville, NY to parents
William Marten or Merten or Martin CRUTTENDEN or CRITTENDEN (b. 17 May 1807
in Poultney, VT-d. 14 Feb 1891 New Haven, MI) and Mary Robinson CLARK or
CLARKE (b. 4 Jul 1810 or 1812-d. 6 Apr 1876 or 1879). Laura was one of 6
children born to this couple including, Laura E.; Jay; William Jay; Lucy J.;
Cassus or Cassius Hawkin; and Carlisle Lyle CRUTTENDEN, all born in NY or VT
between 1833 and 1853. Laura married Cornelius E. BALDWIN (b. 9 Apr 1824 or
1834 in Phelps, NY-1892) on 4 Nov 1865 and together they had a daughter Mary
Antoinette BALDWIN (1872-1892).
It appears that Cornelius BALDWIN had two sons from a previous marriage
including, Fred Calvin and Arthur J. BALDWIN born in 1859 and 1860 prior to
his marriage to Laura. Laura died 14 Sept 1909 of Influenza in New Haven,
MI and is buried in the Centennial Cemetery in New Haven, MI.
Census records provide the following info:
1870 census of Chesterfield Township, Macomb Co., MI:

Laura BALDWIN, age 36, Keeping House, born NY

Arthur BALDWIN, son, age 19, Works on Farm, born MI, parents born NY
Mary BALDWIN, dau, age 8, born MI
+ 1 Nurse + 1 Farm Worker
1900 census of Chesterfield, MI:

born NY, a Machinery Worker
Anna BALDWIN, wife, age 37, born Aug 1862, married 16 years, no children,
born MI, parents born NY/MI
Laura BALDWIN, step-mother, age 66, born Nov 1833, a widow, 1 child/none
living, born VT, parents born NY
+ 1 Boarder
I am hoping to locate someone from Laura's family so that the photograph can
be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or you know
someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley
My biggest brick wall is John Baylis Clarke/Clark, Sr. He spelled his
name without the "e" the few times that I have seen his signature. His
son, J. B. Clark, Jr, for the most part spelled it without the "e", but
several of his grandchildren spelled it with the "e" and their
descendents still do.
J. B. Clark, Sr. was born c1791 in SC and died 1855 in Anderson, SC. His
birthdate may not be right as I only have the 1850 census to go by. He
married Jane "Janey" Sammons (c1783 NC-aft 1860 Anderson), daughter of
John Sammons, Sr. and Elizabeth Walker Sammons who had moved from VA
through NC to Greenville, SC by 1786. It may have been a second
marriage for Jane since she was older than John B. Clark by several
years if the 1850 census is right. John Baylis Clark, Sr. was a cabinet
maker and probably a small farmer. John B. Clark, Jr. was a merchant
tailor.
John Baylis Clark Jr's civil war records on the Fold3 website reveal
that he was born in Greenville, SC so I know that his father, John B.
Clarke, Sr, was in Greenville, SC by 1824 and probably before as his
wife was from there. J. B. Clark, Sr, was first seen in Anderson, SC, in
1831 when he signed a petition, and then between 1836 and 1840 he bought
about ten lots in the town of Anderson. He and Jane had two children
Elizabeth A. Clark ( 1820-1857) who married Jesse R. Smith in Anderson
and John B. Clarke, Jr (1924-1888). Both must have been born in
Greenville, SC.
I'm looking for any Clarke/Clark connections to my John Baylis Clark
in Greenville or anywhere else in SC. He's been like a lone wolf; I've
never found any relatives. Any help would be truly appreciated.
