Hello,
Seeing the discussion on a James CLARKE this morning reminded me of my major
"concrete-block wall" in the name of James CLARK or CLARKE.
He (of unknown birth) "appears" in Little Compton, RI, ~1827, marries in
1829 in nearby Westport, MA. Fathers a daughter there in ~1836. And,
"disappears" in ~1844.
No one knows where he came from and no one knows how old he was when he
married in 1829. However, his wife, the widow, Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER)
LAVARE, was born in 1800 in Westport.
There is the possibility that he got on a ship in New Bedford, MA, in 1844.
This ship was heading out to the "Indian Ocean" and a James CLARK/E jumped
ship in NSW, Australia, in 1845. This James was a "greenhand," so he was
not a mariner. However, Rhoda's late husband was a mariner, as were many
men along the MA / RI border.
I have a few more "guesses." And, I cannot .prove. James CLARK / E was my
ancestor. The only child I know of was Mary Anna CLARK / E, b~1836 in
Westport, MA. When an adult, she married John DEXTER from Killingly, CT.
They had 3 daughters but lost 2. During 1880's, they moved to Melrose, MA,
and took in a baby girl. They adopted her in 1892, and changed her name to
Mary Anna Clark DEXTER. This little girl became my grandmother. It
is my (and others) "educated guess" that Mr. & Mrs. DEXTER were her
maternal grandparents. I believe their daughter in Killingly, CT, had a
pregnancy outside of her marriage during the summer of 1888.
Rhoda had 3 children from her first marriage, so her 4th child, Mary / Molly CLARK, had half-siblings. I've been corresponding with a descendant of Rhoda's LAVARE children for 10 yrs. We both believe that Mrs. DEXTER was my grandmother's grandmother. So, the mysterious James CLARK/E would have been her great-grandfather.

Thanks, Sue. Yes, I understood what you meant! Yes, Christopher has tripped me up, too. Our lines crisscross quite a bit in their westward migration, but are not related--at least not on the Clark side. Thanks for responding! :-)
