Hi Tina. Thank you for the info. The Charles and Robert names in the Oswego reference are Benjamin's children, not his brothers. But you are correct that my Robert might be related. I've been trying to find the names of Benjamin's 4 brothers because my Robert was born around the same year as Benjamin (according to census reports). What location is the 1851/52 census you refer to where Sarah Jane Grant was living?

At http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyoswego/oswegocounty/famsketch1.html there is a short biography of Benjamin Clark, born Pittsburgh Twp. who identifies brothers including Charles and Robert, father Henry, and grandfather John P. Clark.
I have an unknown Clark, born Pittsburgh Twp. who married Peter Grant. He was a widower when the 1851/52 census was taken, and three of his children were living with Charles Clark and Robert Clark, including my 3rd great-grandmother Sarah Jane Grant. I'm try to prove/disprove whether my unknown Clark was one of Benjamin's sisters. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

J. Howard Clarke, whose well improved farm of 164 acres is situated in South Franklin Township, Washington County, Pa., is a representative citizen of this section, where he was born on Nov. 15, 1857. His parents are John G. and Sarah (Herron) Clarke.
The Clarke family is an old and prominent one in this section, having been established in South Franklin Township by the grandfather, Joseph Clarke, who secured land from the Government at an early dat. John G. Clarke, father of J. Howard Clarke, is one of the venerable citizens of South Franklin Township, of which he has been a lifelong resident. For many years he was prominent in public life and is one of the three native born citizens of Washington County who have been elected members of the State Legislature, in which body he served with distinction. He married Sarah Herron, who was born in North Strabane Township, Washington County, and of their children the following survive: Catherine L., who resides at Washington, Pa.; J. Howard, who resides in South Franklin Township; Norman E. and Mary R., both of whom reside at Washington; J. Julius, who is a practicing physician at Pittsburg; Rankin J., who resides in South Franklin Township; Albert E. who is a prominent dent!
ist at Pittsburg; and Lulu A., who lives in South Franklin Township. In his political affiliation, Hon. John G. Clarke is a Republican. Since he removed from the farm to Washington, a few years since, he has been an attendant of the Second United Presbyterian Church. He still retains the ownership of his great stock farm of 401 acres, situated in South Franklin Township, where he was engaged for many years in farming and stock raising. He raises horses, cattle and sheep, paying especial attention to the latter, keeping from 500 to 600 of the Saxon breed, and is credited with growing the finest wool produced in Washington County. Although he has reached his 0th year, hr remains interested in his business enterprises and is still concerned in the public affairs of the country, in which he once was an important factor.
J. Howard Clarke was educated in the schools of South Franklin Township, Washington and Jefferson College and the Iron City Commercial College at Pittsburg, and was graduated from the latter institution. For a number of years his interests have been mainly agricultural, farming and stock raising, to which he has added the specialty of fruit growing. He has devoted large sections of his land to the cultivation of cherries, peaches, plums, pears and berries and those who have visited his abundant orchards can never doubt that Washington County can produce fruit equal to any other section provided scientific knowledge is made use of in the planting and care of trees and vines.
On Nov. 21, 1897, Mr. Clarke was married to Miss Sarah Brinton, who was born in Allegheny County, Pa., a daughter of the late Stephen Marshal and Mary (McGrew) Brinton, who were parents of five children: Samuel M., who lives on the old homestead at Pitcairn; Elizabeth (McCleary), who is deceased; M. Homer, a prominent citizen of Ellsworth, Iowa; W.M., who is now deceased, was a physician of Sharpsburg; and Sarah. Mr. and Mrs. Clarke have had four children born to them: Elizabeth B., S. Rebecca, Marshal B. and Mary B. Mr. Clarke and family are members of the Second United Presbyterian Church of Washington. He is a man of enterprise and public spirit, a Republican in politics, and for six years has served as a member of the school board of South Franklin Township.

Peter V. Clarke
The subject of this biography is the well-known proprietor of the livery, sales and boarding stable, located at 117 and 119 Fourth avenue, which is on e of the best barns in the city, being well equipped with a fine line of modern vehicles and about twenty good horses. Mr. Clarke was born in Clinton December 24, 1872, and is a son of Peter and Ellen (Spaulding) Clarke. The father was a native of Ireland and a son of Patrick Clarke, who settled in Center township, Clinton county, Iowa, in 1861, and continued to make his home there throughout life, his time and attention being devoted to farming. He died in 1889, when about eighty years of age. His wife had passed away several years previous. The mother of our subject was born near Boston, Massachusetts, and was a daughter of Patrick Spaulding. Her father died in the east and her mother subsequently came to Iowa and spent her last days in Clinton county.
Peter Clarke, our subject's father, was one of the early settlers of this section of Iowa, and was a pioneer merchant of Clinton, being the second to engage in the grocery business in that city. In early life he conducted a grocery store, and also carried on a saloon in connection with it. He continued in the former business from 1862 until his death, in 1875, his store being located on the corner of Third avenue and Second street, in the neighborhood of J.L. Clarke's undertaking rooms. He had four children, of whom two are still living, these being: P.V., our subject; and J.L., who is engaged in the undertaking business. After the father's death the mother married James Sheppard, who was also an early settler of Clinton, and was for many years in charge of the wood yards of W.J. Young & Company, of this place. Since that business has been abandoned he has lived retired at 619 Seventh avenue, where he has a pleasant home. Unto James and Helen Sheppard were born five c!
hildren, those living being: Lizzie, Gertie, Charles and Thomas.
Mr. Clarke, of this review, was reared and educated in Clinton, and at the age of fifteen years began his business career as clerk in a grocery store, where he was employed for two years. He then embarked in the livery business, in partnership with his brother, J.L., but on the 20th of April, 1897, he purchased the latter's interest, and has since been alone. He is an energetic, progressive and reliable business man, and is meeting with well deserved success.
Mr. Clarke was married June 17, 1896, to Miss Nellie Ruddy, of Clinton, and they have become the parents of three children, namely: Marrette, Edmund Peter, and Francis Raymond. Fraternally our subject is a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and of the Sheridan Club, and is highly respected and esteemed wherever known. With his wife, he is a member of St. Mary's Catholic church.

History of Washington County (Pennsylvania)

(Note: a picture of Hon. John G. Clarke is on page 766)
Hon. John G. Clarke, ex-member of the State Legislature of Pennsylvania, and a director of the First National Bank of Washington, for many years has been one of the most active and best known men of Washington County, Pa. His principal business until recent years was farming and wool growing, in South Franklin Township, but he is now living practically retired from business activity, his residence being at No. 90 South Wade avenue, Washington. He was born not far from Washington, January 24, 1829, and is the third son of Joseph Clarke and a grandson of Joseph Clarke, Sr., who patented the farm on which the nephew of John G. Clarke, Joseph J. Clarke now lives, in South Franklin Township.
John G. Clarke enjoyed excellent educational advantages, first in the public schools and later in Washington and Jefferson College. At the beginning of his individual career, agricultural activities lay nearest his hand and he became interested in farming and stock raising, but at the same time, gave considerable attention to the affairs which pertained to the welfare of South Franklin Township. After the formation of the new township of Franklin, in which he assisted, he helped in its redistricting and at the first election was chosen as a member of the school board. Being somewhat of an enthusiast on matters pertaining to public education, he continued his services on the board and for a long term of years was its secretary. As his years increased his public responsibilities increased also. Soon after its incorporation, he was elected to the board of managers of the Upper Ten-Mile Plank Road Company and served as its president for thirty-five years.
In the meanwhile, Mr. Clarke became an extensive wool grower and was one of the leading advocates for a tariff on wool, writing articles on the subject for publication in the newspapers and carrying the fight to Congress, three times being sent to represent the Washington County Wool Growers' Association, of which he was president for several years, to Washington, D.C. In 1886, he had the honor of making the only farmer's address in defense of tariff on wool before the committee on ways and means. This address was published in the periodicals all over the United States and excited much comment, being pronounced a clear and convincing exposition of the woo growers' case. In addition he was chosen to make the speech on behalf of the wool growers' of Washington County, when this body visited the late President McKinley, at his residence. That he had a keen insight into the conditions that existed and the results that would be brought about by the proposed tariff, was amply !
demonstrated by what followed the enactment of the Dingley Bill.
Politically, Mr. Clarke was reared a Whig and held strong anti-slavery views and upon the organization of the Republican party he joined its ranks. In 1886 he was the party nominee for the State Legislature, and in his election which followed, led the ticket with the largest majority. He took the duties of his office seriously, was always to be found in his seat and in committee meetings, and voted intelligently on all questions of importance to his country and State. He was particularly active in furthering those bills of vital import to the rural communities, served efficiently as a member of the agricultural committee, and gave his influence in favor of the bill for the increase of State appropriations to the public schools. He antagonized the repeal of the oleomargarine law. Mr. Clarke served with faithfulness and won a place high in the esteem of his constituents.
On May 26, 1853, Mr. Clarke was married to Miss Sarah H. Clokey, a daughter of Samuel Clokey, of Clokeyville, Washington County, and to them were born seven sons and three daughters. He is a member of the United Presbyterian Church at Washington, of which he has been an elder since 1864. Prior to that time he was a member of the East Buffalo congregation, of which he was made ruling elder when twenty-six years of age. He had always been very active in church work and has contributed liberally of his means to its support and to the furthering of charitable undertakings.

Hi again,
I just reread my post and realized I mentioned Rhoda's maiden name but not her married name that she had when she married James CLARK (or CLARKE). Her first husband was Epaphroditus LAVARE, a mariner, who died at sea probably when his wife was pregnant with their 3rd child, or just after their daughter was born. They had 2 sons, first.

Hello Diana! Does sound as if we have a match. I'm not entirely familiar with getting around Ancestry and am not sure you'd have the opportunity to view all of my responses. I wanted to be sure you received my info as well. I spoke to Megan on Saturday and I understand she told you some of the info I wrote to her. I'd be happy to send the same to you too. My email is jackandro(a)aol.com. I'm in DE and my in-laws live mostly in the NY area, including Rockaways. My sister-in-law tells me that their grandfather John O'Brien Clarke dropped the O'Brien at some point and used his confirmation name Aloysius as his middle name. His only child, Edith, was struck and killed by a speeding driver in 1950. She left 7 children between the ages of 15 and 18 months. My husband who posted the original query died 2-1/2 months after he posted it. So we were quite surprised to receive responses after all this time. I'd be happy to share whatever info I know or can find out from my in!

Hey
This is Anthony Brosnan, I'm the great grandson of Nicholas Clarke and Margaret Clarke (nee Kerrigan). I have only recently started to trace the family history after my my grandmothers death and happened to come across this page. Nicholas Clarke worked at Slane Castle as a farm servant and died in about 1967 in Drogheda. He was married to Margaret Kerrigan, a domestic servent also from Slane. They had five children but she unfortunately died during Child birth in her early 30's (about 1931). Their children were Rosie, William, Rita or Peggy (?), Mary (My grandmother, known as Maureen who emigrated to Birmingham, Eng in the 1950s)and Kathleen who lives in Essex, Eng.
Would love to know more about the family history so please keep in touch if you find out any more. Our email adress is brosnansfamily(a)tiscali.co.uk. Also if I can help you with anymore info let me know.
All the best, Anthony

Hi Judi,
I can't answer your question, but I'd like to mention the man who I believe is an ancestor:
James CLARK is one of my "concrete-block walls put together with reinforced cement." He was probably born in the 1790-1800 timeframe - somewhere ! He "appeared" in Little Compton, RI, in ~1827, and married in nearby Westport, MA, in 1829. He fathered a daughter there in 1836, and then "disappeared" in ~1844.
He might have been the James CLARK who got on a ship in New Bedford, MA, which was on the way to the Indian Ocean. He jumped ship in NSW, Australia. (He also might have been the James CLARK who was on a small ship in the St. Lawrence River in 1825.) If so, he was a "travelin' man."
He had married Rhoda MANCESTER, born 1800 Westport, who lived into her late 80's. When she married James, she was a widow with 3 very young children. Their daughter was Mary Anna CLARK who grew up to marry John DEXTER from Killingly, CT. I don't have proof, but there is a hint that John and Mary married in Stonington, CT. And, Mary's older half-sister also married in Stonington. I've never found out why but assumed there was some kind of connection for the LAVARE / CLARK extended family to Stonington.
John and Mary lived in Killingly and had 3 daughters, but lost 2 as children. When in their 50's, they moved to Melrose, MA, and in 1889 took in a baby girl and later adopted her. That girl grew up to become my grandmother. *
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
*
My grandmother's childhood is a long, complicated story, which I've told many times in past years on several Lists. My "educated guess" is that John and Mary (CLARK) DEXTER were my grandmother's maternal grandparents. I believe their married daughter in Killingly had a pregnancy outside of her marriage during the summer of 1888.
