My biggest brick wall is John Baylis Clarke/Clark (The family spells it
both ways) He was born c1791 in SC and died 1855 in Anderson, SC. He
married Jane "Janey" Sammons (c1783 NC-aft 1860 Anderson), daughter of
John Sammons, Sr. and Elizabeth Walker Sammons who had moved from VA
through NC to Greenville, SC by 1786. It may have been a second
marriage for Jane since she was older than John B. Clarke by several
years. John Baylis Clarke, Sr. was a cabinet maker and probably a small
farmer. John B. Clark, Jr. was a merchant tailor.
John B. Clarke, Sr is first seen in Anderson in 1831 when he signs a
petition, and then between 1836 and 1840 buys about ten lots in the town
of Anderson. He and Jane had two children Elizabeth A. Clarke (
1820-1857) and John B. Clarke, Jr (1924-1888). I had always wondered
where John, Sr. was from before he moved to Anderson. Greenville was
on my radar becasue that's where his wife was from, but I had no proof.
Yesterday I found all of John Baylis Clark Jr's civil war records on the
Fold3 website. On one of the forms, the question was asked "Where were
you born" and he answered Greenville. I finally have the proof that the
family lived in Greenville at least in 1824 when John Jr. was born and
probably before.
I'm looking for any Clarke/Clark connections to my John Baylis Clarke
in Greenville. He's been like a lone wolf; I've never found any
relatives. Any help would be truly appreciated.
