Hi Brenda,
I thought I would send you some of what I have on my Clarkes to see if it ties in with your Matthew.
Charles Clarke - b. May 7, 1793 'of' Speerholme, Castlederg, County Tyrone.
m. bef. 1829, Martha Harpur/Harper
d. Jul 6, 1877, Speerholme.
They had children:

Griffiths valuation in 1859 & 1860 lists both Matthew and Charles Clarke living on a Corn Mill in Speerholme.
I look forward to comparing notes.

Hello,
There is a man who I believe is an ancestor, and his name is James CLARK or CLARKE. He arrived in NSW, Australia, in 1845. He got on a ship in Massachusetts in 1844. The ship was heading out towards the Indian Ocean and it was to be a 4-year voyage. James "deserted" in 1845. We have no knowledge of him after that.
This is probably just an FYI for you.
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
(This James CLARK is one of my "concrete-block walls put together with reinforced cement. He "appears" in RI in 1827, married in nearby MA in 1829, fathers a daughter there in 1836, and "disappears" in 1844.) (His daughter grew up to marry John DEXTER from CT. Around 1890, while in MA, they took in a baby girl and then adopted her. That little girl was my grandmother. My educated-guess is that the DEXTER couple was my grandmother's maternal grandparents.)

I am very interested in your information as I believe that the Matthew Clarke mentioned and my gg-grandfather Charles Clarke of Speerholme were brothers. Charles owned the corn/flour mill and, according to the Griffiths Valuation Charles and Matthew were there together. My father was born on that homestead in 1924 before they immigrated to Canada the following year. Is this the same family and homestead you were referring to? I would be happy to share information with you if you are interested.

I bought some old postcards to add to my postcard collection. In one such group I found a couple of family pictures taken around 1895. One is of a young man (around 25 years of age) with no identification. The other is of a young girl (around 4 years of age) named Martha F. Clarke. Her name is written on the back with a note that W. Hunter was the artist (photographer?) and the name of the town in Kansas. The town name is hard to read. If you think they are in your family, I'll be glad to scan them and send a jpeg to you. You can contact me at lafarr(a)cox.net. Hope these are your family. Lynne Farr

You can search John J. Clarke on Public Member Trees. The name of my tree is Clarke Family Tree. If you have any trouble, let me know. So, we're relatives. I have determined that Stephen James Clarke is John, Joseph's and Maime's father. There were other children who died. I have the newspaper clipping of the fire in New York which left them without a home and destroyed their place of business as well. It is possilbe one of the siblings died in this fire. If you want to give me your e-mail, I can scan you some pictures, the article, etc. Also, in one of the New York censuses, they are incorrectly listed as Clarks without the "e". My e-mail is mrsmehler(a)comcast.net.
Sincerly, your 2nd cousin? Phyllis Clarke Mehler P.S. Also have info on where they are buried.

Looking for anyone with info on Thomas Clarke and his family. Believe he is the son of Thomas F. and Grandson of John A. Clarke (originally Clerkin) who was born in County Monaghan, Ireland and emigrated to RI. Anyone who may have info or be related please contact me at jmduffy17(a)msn.com. Thanks.

I hope I am doing this right, please forgive me if I am doing this incorrectly.
Mr. Clarke was a Scottish born actor who married my great grandmother Sophie Allan (nee Mirskia and later Zonia Sargent) in the early 19teens in Manhattan where they both had acting work. He alternated his time between Manhattan and Kitchener and London Ontario where his mother, Mary (Ann?) Bruce Clarke Proudfoot was living. His father was John Clarke. I believe his maternal grandparents were Robert Bruce (1826-1887) and Mary Agnes Bruce (1827-1893), of Longside Aberdeenshire St Fergus from Gallow Hill.
Mr. Clarke was first married to Jane Fearnley, another actress in 1907.
Mr. Clarke was in a number of silent movies including "A soul with out windows", "The Iron RIng" and "Betsy Ross". He was also in stage plays and was apparently famous for playing a dope fiend.
During their marriage, my great grandmother had 2 daughters, Mary Lucille Clarke and Ruth Virginia Clarke. There is some question as to my grandma Ruth's paternity.
In 1918 while they acted in a production of "the man who came back" in Massachusetts, Mr. Clarke and my great grandmother fought and he abducted the children. He tried to take them by train to Ontario where his mother was living. She called the Mounties on him and the train was stopped in Albany. My great grandmother took the train overnight to Albany to get her children back after borrowing money from her company (possibly Poly's company). There was a set of court cases about this which hit the Hearst papers and both carreers suffered.
We last see traces of Mr Clarke acting in Manhattan in 1930 then he falls off the face of the earth. We believe he died by 1934 but can't find what happened to him. We think he married again, possibly to a Mary Brady but are uncertain.
Mr Clarke lived in Kitchener and London Ontario in the 20's where he had acting work. We have some publicity shots that were professionally shot in Kitchener.
We'd really like to know what happened to him and what happened to his mother.
We do not know if we have any family anywhere, probably in Scotland or Ontario.
My grandmother and her sister Mary remembered Mrs Proudfoot well. She had red hair and used to visit them. She used to tell the girls that their father used to tell them stories of being descended from Robert the Bruce.
There is some question as to whether the girls saw their father again after the abduction. Family lore says no, but some records say yes.
We're also curious where Mrs. Proufoot and her son Richard are buried.
Thank you.
