Irene, I live in Louisville and I know the Louisville Public library has
old Louisville newspapers. I will have some time next week and I will be glad
to go there and see if I can find what you are looking for. Charlie

Hi
A friend sent me an extract from The New York Times dated 12 Nov 1877
entitled 'some old violins' It was a reprint of an article dated Nov 9th
1877 from the Louisville Courier Journal. It said that a Mr Thomas L Clarke
'of this city' was the owner of a 250 year old Cremona violin which used to
belong to a John McMurdo of Dumfries Scotland. It said that the Courier
Journal had published a history of this violin in March 1877. I would
really like to read this ...it might explain how the violin got to US from
Scotland and whether there is any connection between the McMurdos and Thos
L
Clarke.
I found a website and emailed the paper which is still functioning but got
a
reply saying that they don't have archives going that far back but that I
should "check with the library for further assistance"
I live in England ...where normally the publisher retains any existing
archive or we have a National Newspaper library. So I'm a bit baffled as to
what they mean by "checking with the library" Is there a national USA
newspaper library? ... or some kind of online resource available through a
public library? Or a library in Louisville?
Or does anyone have Thomas L Clarke of Louisville in their tree?

I know the libraries in NY keep the NY newspapers on microfilm. We have
many libraries, one for each school district. I don't know if the library
for Louisville does this, too. You might want to email them to find out.

The Clarke Families of Rhode Island, by George A. Morrison, pub. New York, 1902 is available for free download (as a pdf file) from Heritage Quest Online. It must be downloaded in 50 page increments. The greater part of the book is devoted to the descendants of Joseph Clarke, (1618-1694) brother of Dr. John Clarke (1609-1676). There is an occasional claim that Dr. John left descendants but none provide credible documentation. Other Rhode Island Clarke families are also covered.
The book is available from several sources for about $55.00.

Brenda and Eric and their parents Albert and Ethel (nee Dawson) Clarke sailed for Australia in January 1959.They left from Tilbury England aboard the Strathaird.
Eric was born in Sheffield England in 1948
Brenda was born in England in 1950.
Albert was born in 1922 and his trade in England was as a turner on a lathe.
Ethel was born in 1924.
They married in Sheffield in 1947.
They are believed to have disembarked in Melbourne but they may have settled elsewhere in Australia.
I'm not related to this family but rather I'm trying to help a woman in England reconnect with her school friend.
If anyone has any ideas or recognizes the names, please post here.
Thanks in advance,
Elaine

Does anyone have any Clarke/Clarks in their trees who were born in Kinderhook, NY about 1800-1830? I am trying to trace my great, great, great grandmother. She has been such a mystery to me. I found her marriage to Jonas Rockefeller, but it doesn't list her parents or witnesses. ???

Thanks for replying. He went by the name "Dan Clarke". He married Clara Belle Collier sometimes between 1928 & 1932. His father's name, as best I can gather, was James. He had brothers, Ira, James, Andrew, and Harry, and a sister, Minzie.
My father was an only child & is now deceased so I don't have much to go on. He never talked about his family very much. All of the individuals listed above are deceased.
I haven't checked census records.

Thanks for your reply. I don't have William in my files. Do you know who he marr? There were a lot of Clarke's in Essex in the early 1900's. I will be glad to share what ever I have with you but I need more info to go on. Have you checked the census records?
Ollie
