This was sent to me by a gentleman who live near Newtownhamilton, County Armagh, Northern Ireland
Allen Clark
allen.clark88(a)gmail.com
The 1830 Tithe lists for Newtownhamilton show a lot of Clarkes as follows; Adam, Andrew, David, James, John, Samuel and William. There was also Hugh, William, Alexander and Patrick living close by in the adjoining parish of Creggan. It is obvious that this was ' Clark territory ' and the name Clarksbridge confirms that. There is also a road in the area called Clerkes Road.

Is anyone currently researching this family and their decendents or possibly the Clarke's of Whitegate Cheshire who married into the Middlewich branch 1890,s
I have a huge amount of information about the Middlewich branch from 1750 - circa 1900 but struggling with the last 100 years or so ( 1900 - 2000 ) putting the jigsaw together, there are too many branches and no census data to access.

Hello there my name is Christine Bertoni nee Treleaven and I am researching a family tree for the surname "Clark" Clarke"
My grandmother had in her possession several copies of Deeds the first being:
WILLIAM CLARKE CLARK order in council for crown grant of 100 acres for himself and 150 acres for his family consisting of a wife and two ten children in the 10th township district Mecklenburgh signed at Kingston Ontario 1791 (this name appears with and without the "e" in several place on the document
JOSEPH CLARKE CLARK , order in council for a crown grant of land in the name of Joseph Clark Clarke (this name appears with and without the "e" in several place on the document including his signature. This deed was 200 acres for given to him by the Crown as a free grant as his father William was a U.E. Loyalilst. This deed is for property known as Township of Camden County of Lennox & Addington being Lot 47 in Concession 8. This document gives this land at his 21st birthday and it is dated April 1808 giving a birthdate for Joseph of 1787.
JAMES CLARKE CLARK , An affidavit stating he is the son of William and 21 years of ago and is to receive crown grant for land in the name of James Clark for 200 acres as the son of William Clarke Clark U.E. Loyalist of the township of Adolphustown dated January 1816 giving a birthdate for James of 1795. (this name appears with and without the "e" in several place on the document
MARY CLARKE CLARK born 1789 in canada Lennox & Addington married 1808 to BELYATTEE OUTWATER born 1785 in Dutchess County New York and she was also granted land and I also have information on her husbands side for their tree which contains names such as OUTWATER, PARKS, HAWLEY, RUTTAN, HUFFMAN etc etc)
JOHN CLARK order in council for land grant as son of U.E. loyalist given at age 21 making his birth date 1810.
My grandmother was Hattie Estelle Weller born 1890 in Rochester NY. NOTE:(her mother was visting friends there when she went into labour) her mother was SARAH ADDIE CLARKE CLARK born 1864 & her father Thomas E. Weller born 1864 and they were married December 23, 1885 in Halibiurton Ontario Canada. They had other children a male Milton Conrad Weller (who I understand contracted Mumps and did not bear any children?) and Evelyn Marie Weller who died in her twenties never married nor children. My grandmother Hattie married Wilfred Warner Treleaven my maiden name and there is a full published history of the Treleaven's dating back to 1507 and which I participated in the completion of.
So it is additional information about William before and after tha I need help with and was wondering if perhaps you have come across any of these names.
My grandmother and her parents lived in the Brighton, Coburg area. Any help would be appreciated as with many other amatuer genealogists all of my senior family members have passed away & my generation is the last one and I would like to complete this section of my tree

Hi again,
I forgot to add the footnote. Until I can prove that Mrs. Clara (DEXTER) YOUNG of Killingly, CT, was the birth-mother of my grandmother, I cannot prove that her grandfather, James CLARK, was my ancestor.
But, there are new clues. A "very distant cousin" in CT has received some old photos. One is of Mrs. Mary (CLARK) DEXTER. We compared it to a photo of my grandmother, and we both see a family resemblance.
(The researcher in CT is descended from an older half-brother of Mrs. DEXTER - with the LAVARE name.)

Hello,
I probably haven't mentioned my mysterious ancestor, James CLARK or CLARKE, on this Board in a long time. *
He is a big mystery for many reasons. First, we have no idea where he was born, not even which country. And, he married in Westport, MA, in 1829 to a woman who was born in 1800. So, I can only guess that he was born 1790 - 1800.
He "appears" in Little Compton, RI, in ~1827, and marries nearby in Westport to the widow, Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) LAVARE. She had 3 children from her first marriage, and then they had a daughter in ~1836 in Westport. Unfortunately, James "disappears" during the 1840's.
James might have been the man who got on a ship in 1844 which was heading out to the Indian Ocean. He "deserted" in Australia in 1845. He might have been the James who was in the Province of Quebec around 1825. If this is all James, he was a "traveling man."
The daughter, Mary Anna CLARK, married a man from Killingly, CT (Windham Co.), John DEXTER. Researchers tell me there were CLARK / CLARKE families in that area at the time. So, one suspicion is that Mary visited her father's relatives and that's how she met John.
John and Mary DEXTER in Killingly had 3 daughters, but lost 2 of them. The surviving daughter became Mrs. Clara YOUNG. Around 1888 John and Mary left CT and moved to Melrose, MA. At some point they took in a baby girl and adopted her in 1892. That little girl was re-named to Mary Anna Clark DEXTER, and she grew up to become my grandmother.
This is a long, complicated story. I've told it many times on the Lists and Boards in past years, so there are more details there.
I have reason to believe that Mrs. Mary (CLARK) DEXTER had ties to her CLARK relatives, both in CT and in MA. She died in 1899, and my grandmother was re-orphaned. She spent till ~1910 in orphanages. When she married in 1911, she stated that her birth-father was William CLARK. We have no idea who that was.
My imagination can come up with many possibilities. But, my "educated guess" is that the Mrs. Clara YOUNG in Killingly had a pregnancy outside of her marriage in the summer of 1888. While my grandmother was living in the DEXTER home in Melrose, MA, while she was a baby to Age 10, she overheard conversations which told her that the DEXTER Adoptive parents "knew" who her birth-parents were. They never told her.
That's all I'll say for the moment. There is information and more details in the archives of the Lists and Boards - which I've posted.
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
(My grandmother knew the only child of Abner and Clara YOUNG; he was Earle YOUNG, and he visited his grandparents' home in Melrose on school vacations. She found him after they had both married and compared memories. Earle asked his mother, but his mother went to her dying days proclaiming that she didn't even know that her parents had adopted a little girl. This was another lie, and the 2 couples had visited with each other until the parents' deaths in 1899 and 1905.
Adding to the mystery is that, when Mrs. DEXTER died, her remains were brought back to Killingly to be buried. But, 6 yrs. later, when Mr. DEXTER died, his remains were buried in an relatively unmarked grave on the grounds of the Tewksbury State Hospital (MA).)

Hi Christine,
I can only offer an FYI. One of my mystery ancestors is a James CLARK or CLARKE who was probably born in the 1790 to 1800 timeframe. The big problem is that we have no idea where he was born, not even which country.
He "appears" in Rhode Island around 1827 and marries in nearby Westport, MA, in 1829. He fathers a child in 1836 there, and then "disappears" during 1840's.
We have a few "guesses" that he might have been in Canada around 1825 and then, when he disappeared, he might have gone to Australia. So, if it's the same man, he was a "traveling man." But, I seem to think he had ties to Connecticut, as his daughter met a man from Killingly, CT, to marry.
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
(James CLARK / CLARKE and his daughter, Mary Anna CLARK, are part of a BIG family mystery regarding the birth and childhood of my grandmother. As Mrs. Mary DEXTER, she and her husband adopted a little girl while in their 50's.)

I have been researching for over 15 years. This past year I started working on a history project for Knox County, Dist 19 Beaver Ridge [Karns], Dist 9 Solway & part of Dist 4 Anderson Co. TN finding the families that moved to this area prior to 1840. This family list is growing, I have 60 surnames and over 100 total that lived in the above districts . If you believe you have family that came from this area first check the 1830/1840 census on my Blog.
East Tennessee Footprints
http://easttnfootprints.blogspot.com/
I am interest in contacting family members that may be interested in adding a brief history of the families and will share what I have found if you see a surname that you may believe is a family line. Pryor to 1860 a lot of the sons moved to Texas and Missouri.
I am writing a book and plan to publish it this fall, 2010. Printed copies will be given to the Historical Society of Knoxville. I plan on including all the families that continued to live in this area through 1860. I will include land records, census, tax and court records if found. I will not be doing a genealogy study of the family lines but I plan on doing a family group sheet using census records.

My great grandmother Zonia (nee Sophia Helena Mirskia) was a Russian born actress who married an Aberdeen born actor named Richard A Clarke in NYC in 1915. She was born in 1892 and he was born in 1876 but gave his birth years as 1877 and 1879. She was a stage actress, he acted on stage and a some silent films, including "Betsy Ross", "The Iron Ring", and "The Spurs of Sybil" amongst others (too many to list here). There were two daughters, my great aunt Mary Lucile Clarke, and my grandmother Ruth Virginia Clarke. He may not have been Ruth's father.
In 1918 while Sophie Allan and Clarke were performing in the Boston run of "The man who came back" at the Plymouth theater, Clarke kidnapped the children and almost managed to spirit them away by train to Toronto where his mother, Mary Proudfoot Clarke lived. She recieved a phone call from him and I belive called the authorities. My great grandmother took the train up and got the girls and came back with her mother-in-law and no husband.
The girls may or may not have seen Mr. Clarke again after that.
We know that in 1930 he was lodging in Manhattan. We are told that he died sometime in the 1930's but aren't sure when. Sometime in the 1920's he was working in Kitchner, Ontario, according to some photos and play bills.
In 1918 his mother was in Toronto and perhaps he died there. We just don't know. We would like to know where he was buried.
In the late 20's my great grandmother changed her name to Zonia and married a man named Sargent. The children became his.
My great grandmother was very careful not to badmouth Mr. Clarke in any way when pressed for information. She meerly said that they were married and then they were not.
We don't know if Mr. Clarke ever re-married or if my great aunt has any living cousins. She and my grandmother ofcourse are deceased.

The only picture of Mr. Clarke I have are from photocopies of playbills and newspapers. So I appologize for the quality. I've never seen one where he was not "made up".

Did Wanda have any children by Donald Clarke?

Joe, are you from Chicago? If yes are you related to Angie Agnello that graduated Siena HS in 1960?
