I was at this cemetery today doing research on my family when I came across this marker. Thought I would share.
What I could read:
Joseph Clarke
Private Co. (Illeg)
13th Maine (Illeg)
Died Feb 5, 1912 (1812? I think 1912, as the cemetery only opened in 1847)
Aged 65 Yrs

Hi, thanks so much for your reply. Unfortunately your James Clark was born too early to be my ancestor. He died in 1911 at the age of 71, so I place his birth year as c.1840. A newspaper death notice that I found states his age as 80, so he could have been born as early as 1830, but even this is not far enough back to be the same man. Perhaps there is just something about the name and a propensity for wanderlust? :)
Thanks again for your help.
Kind regards, Kim

Hello. I was just looking for one of my old postings in the archives, and noticed a few other postings which mention New Bedford, MA. I was wondering if anyone has tied those families together.
Also, I have found out this summer that there were CLARK / CLARKE families in or near Killingly, CT, during the 1800's. And I wondered if anyone is researching them.
As I've mentioned many times I have an ancestor, James CLARK / CLARKE, who was probably born 1790-1800 "somewhere." A quick summary is that he "appears" in RI in ~1827, marries in a nearby MA town in 1829, fathers a daughter in Westport, MA, in 1836, and "disappears" during 1840's. He might have been the James CLARK who got on a ship in New Bedford, MA, in 1844. The ship was heading out to the Indian Ocean, and James "deserted" in Australia.
His daughter, Mary CLARK, married a man from Killingly, CT, and I have no idea how she might have met John DEXTER. So, one thought is that Mary had CLARK relatives in or near Killingly, and she might have gone there to visit them.
There is more information about this couple in the archives of this Board, and other Boards and Lists. I believe that John and Mary DEXTER were the maternal grandparents of my grandmother. While living in Melrose, MA, they adopted a little girl in 1892. I believe their married daughter back in CT had a pregnancy outside of her marriage in 1888. (long, complicated story)
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
P.S. When my grandmother married in 1911, she stated her birth-father was William CLARK. We have no idea who he was. My grandmother knew that the DEXTER's and other people knew who her birth-parents were, and they never told her. And, she was placed in an orphanage at Age 10, living to Age 20 in "homes."

Hello. I can probably only offer an FYI. One of my ancestors is a James CLARK, but he is one of my "concrete-block walls." I believe he also might have been "a travelin' man."
James was probably born 1790-1800 - somewhere. He "appears" in Rhode Island ~1827 and marries in a nearby town in Massachusetts in 1829. His wife was the former widow, Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) LAVARE, who was born in MA in 1800. She had 3 very young children, and they had a daughter in 1836. During the 1840's James "disappears." He could very well have been the James CLARK who got on a ship in New Bedford, MA, in 1844 which was heading out to the Indian Ocean. This James, a greenhand, "deserted" in Australia in 1845.
He could have also been the James CLARK on a small ship in the St. Lawrence River in Canada in 1825. No one knows where he was born. But, I have a "hunch" he was from a New England family. I have no information on this James after he arrived in NSW, Australia in 1845.
Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)
(I cannot prove James is my ancestor. My "educated guess" is that his married daughter and her husband were my ancestors. John and Mary (CLARK) DEXTER were long-time residents of Killingly, CT. ~1888 they moved to Melrose, MA. In 1892 they adopted a little girl, and that little girl was my grandmother. I believe that John and Mary were her maternal grandparents. I believe their married daughter back in CT had a pregnancy outside of her marriage during the summer of 1888.)
My James CLARK could have also had the spelling CLARKE. Anything is possible.

Hi, I just today found your query. I am familiar with this name of John Bertram Clarke. My mother told me that my father wrote under this name in the 1920's. I have 2 books that he wrote and copyrighted in Los Angeles in 1923.
In 1934, He published another book in New Hampton, New York.
I am eager to hear from you to share info. My father died when I was 15 months old.
Very curious re: the reason for his arrest too.

This sounds an awful lot like a connection to the story of a woman seeking a Clarke relative who was briefly here in New England USA, had a family and then disappeared. If I remember right, she thinks he might have joined the crew of a ship. I hope she sees your message as it could solve both your problems with this chap. He was no kin of mine, unless he was really, really collateral. I'll see if I have anything on her in my files. Good luck.

Hi all
I am searching for info on my great grandfather James Clarke. His death cert says he was born in Essex, UK but gives no family details. He married my great grandmother in Adelong, NSW, Australia in 1881. Family legend says he was an English sailor who jumped ship in Australia. I know nothing of him before his marriage. I can find several James Clarkes listed as deserters but can find no direct links to mine. I also wonder if he was actually a convict. His name is so common that it is impossible to trace him through census records. I am hoping someone might know the other/earlier side of his life... do you have a missing sailor ancestor by this name? Hopefully we could join the two stories together.

William W. Clark(e) was born about 1811 in the western part of
Massachusetts perhaps Hampdem. He married Frances W. Miller ( born 1810) who was
probably from the same area. They had four children, Frances L. 1835; Willis
Wellington 1840; Ellen G. 1842 and Charles H. 1844.
Willis was educated in Springfield, MA and joined the Union Army in 1861 as
a private in discharged as a major at the end of the war. The Federal
Census has Willis as Willis Clarke (note the "e"). At the time of Willis's
death (1911 ) he was the City Messenger for the city of Waltham, MA. In his
obituary it notes that his father, William, was a Master Mariner . Willis
married Sophie Eldredge ,December 1868 in Canterbury CT. and had two
children Grace and Adelman.1871 and 1873.
I am looking for any information regarding William and Frances Clarke prior
to 1840 and before.

I am looking for any connections to the family of Robert Oldham CLARKE who lived part of his life in Victoria, BC. He was born in 1860 in London, England - the son of John Heard CLARKE.
Robert was married to Margaret Mary LANE who was Irish. Their children were -
Albert Francis (known as Bertie) b 1887, who, in Robert's obituary in 1936 was living in the USA - no specific place mentioned. Bertie was married to a Mary Gordon SIMPSON in 1907. I have not found any children for them.
Victor William John (known as Jack) b 1888 apparently also lived in the USA. He married Ethel Maude SARGISON in 1911. They must have divorced as she married again in 1924 (and Victor was still alive when his father died in 1936). No children found for them either.
Other children of Robert and Margaret were two daughters, Ellen b 1890, and Margaret b 1896, who did not marry and another son, Edward Joseph Yorke who was born in 1901 in Victoria.
I think Edward was married to a Helen someone.
Edward died in 1942, Margaret in 1962 and Ellen in 1965.
Ellen, Margaret and Edward are all buried in the same grave at Ross Bay cemetery in Victoria. Their mother is buried in the Catholic section of the cemetery and their father (Robert O Clarke) is buried at the Royal Oak cemetery. He was in the Navy.
At least one of the sons had children as Robert's obit mentioned grandchildren.
I would love to make contact with someone from this family. Robert's father was a brother of my great grandmother, Sarah Ann CLARKE who married William OLDHAM.
