SIR ERNEST CLARKE
Sir Ernest Clarke, who for many years played a prominent part in agricultural administration in England, died at 31, Tavistock square on Sunday.
Born at Bury St. Edmunds in 1856, the second son of the late J. J. Clarke, he began his career as a clerk in the Medical Department of the Local Government Board, leaving it in 1881 to become assistant secretary to the Share and Loan Department of the Stock Exchange. Six years later he was made secretary to the Royal Agricultural Society of England-a post which he retained until 1905. Many distinctions were conferred on him during that period, including a knighthood in 1898, and an honorary degree in 1894 at Cambridge, whose first lecturer on agricultural history he became in 1896. He was also given honorary membership of many foreign agricultural societies.
His great interest in agriculture did not, however, prevent him from achieving considerable success in what were his two other great pre-occupations - music and bibliography. Many articles from his pen have appeared in the Dictionary of National Biography, and other publications, and he was a vice-president of the Bibliographical and other societies, and a chairman of the Committee of the Folk-lore Society.
Sir Ernest Clarke married in 1880 Marguerite, second daughter of the late James Prevost, of Leghorn. Lady Clarke died in May, 1918.

In regard to William Clarke & Elizabeth Lawrence emigrated with children from Co Cavan, Ireland to Canada in 1843... couple questions/comment:
1: From Atlas, I found a Millbrook, in Ontario, Canada. Is that where your ancestors settled?
2: Do you have the names of the two older sons who were already settled in Millbrook Township? The Shoemaker: ? and the Farmer:?
3. Have you seen an 1841 Census Ireland where this family was listed and the names/ ages or births dates of the Nine children? If so, is there any child with a name Alexander or at least a middle name of Alexander listed? I seek Parents /Siblings/Emigrations on an Alexander Clark, bc: 1844 supposedly Scotland; his wife: Mary Boyd, b:Oct 1850 Paisley, Renfrew,Scot. The Boyd family emigrated from Scotland to Grantham, Lincoln Co. Ontario, Canada about 1870; then in 1879, believe April, they as a married couple with 3 children, immigrated to Attleboro, Bristol Co. MASS. USA. The rest of Mary Boyd's family: Parents: John Boyd & Mary Guthrie & 4 children, went to Lincoln, Providence Co. Rhode Island (RI), USA.
4: Do you have the name of The Ship, Ports and Dates on which your ancestors sailed from Ireland to Canada? When and where did George and John emigrate from Canada, and to what destination in USA? You indicated that you had a bit more information on these two Sons.
Thanks for anything more you could share. My current email: until 19 Oct 08: bernied(a)ns.sympatico.ca

My ancestors William and Elizabeth (Lawrence) CLARKE emigrated with their children from Ireland (County Cavan) to Canada in 1843 and settled in Millbrook-Cavan townships in Canada, joining two older sons who were already settled there. (One a shoemaker; one a farmer.) They had nine children, among them David, Andrew, Eliza, George (b. 1833) and John (b. about 1821).
Does anyone else recognize this family and know anything more? I have quite a lot of information about George (1833-1921), a Methodist-Episcopal minister, and a little about John (my ancestor), both of whom subsequently emigrated to the USA, which I'm happy to share.

She was the illegitamate daughter of my grandmother Martha Lucretia Jeffery nee Clode. I have her birth certificate but no father is named. Emily is shown on the 1901 census as living with both of my grandparents. She was never mentioned by any of my family, if fact I'm not sure they knew of her existance! I would love to hear from anyone with any info.

I am looking for information on my husbands late Father Eric Ivan Clarke. He was born in Watford on 7th January 1898 and died in Dowsby on 18th December 1956. We believe that he married (name unknown) and had 4 sons at least. We are not sure what happend to his wife but he either married or just lived with Margaret Matthews (we never found a marriage certificate but she did go by the name of Clarke) and had a further 4 sons and 5 daughters with Margaret. We also know that his Mother was Stella Clarke (unmarried at the time) - we think born in Suffolk as we can find Eric (shown as Erie Iran Clarke) in the 1901 census living with his Grandparents Henry and Deborah Clarke.
If anyone has any information please get in touch as we are struggling to find anything.

Dear Irene,
Thank you so much for copying the cover of the New Brunswick Magazine and
the article on Kemble Manor.
It certainly helps to set the framework for the social and political climate
in which my ancestors set up their farms in Hampstead in 1788 and also
confirms that this was indeed a settlement of Loyalists.
If I can ever be of any assistance here at the Archives in Ottawa, please
don't hesitate to ask.
Kindest regards,
Anne Clark-Stewart UE

Dear Anne,
I have The New Brunswick Magazine from July 1898 to November 1899. The
article you refer to was in the Sept. 1898 issue. It was "Kemble Manor" by
Jonas Howe and there are three CLARKE names in the list of Loyalists ---
James, Jabez and Isaac. You may email me directly if you would like further
information.

Hi Jennifer
DAP started because I cannot get access to my deceased adopted father's birth records. His adopted surname was Clarke. The law says that if he did not apply in his lifetime then the right to access does not pass on to his descendants. Descendants (such as a son or daughter) of an adopted parent cannot obtain the birth records of their deceased adopted relative, unless under s 79 of the of the UK Adoption & Children's Act, they can satisfy the Court that there are exceptional circumstances justifying disclosure.
The DAP Group believes that this is unjust and contrary to the intention of the 2002 Act to allow greater access to birth information. Consequently we are preparing a case that should come to Court at the end of the year to challenge this Act so that I and other people in my position can be granted access to this biological information.
If this affects you then we would like to hear from you. We are gathering information on how many people are affected in this way and adding your name to our list could add weight to how a change in the law can be brought about.
You can read more on the British Adoption and Fostering site
http://www.baaf.org.uk which highlights the campaign, and links to this page: http://www.adoptionsearchreunion.co.uk/search/dapcampaign/ you can then write to me directly and in confidence if you wish.
I hope to hear from you and any other people who have hit brick walls in their search for UK adopted person birth records.
Frances

Dear Carolyn,
I appreciate your suggestion, but I have already been to that site and to
the actual Achives to get copies of all of the family land grants in New
Brunswick. That's how I know where my relatives had their land.
I am looking for the article by Jonas Howe as it is supposed to contain
references to Loyalists who settled at Kemble Manor. I am trying to find
references to my CLARK family being Loyalists or expanding on the limited
information which was containded in the land documents.
The New Brunswick Magazine was first published in 1898 and there are a few
copies in the Archives.
I was wondering if anyone has a copy of this magazine or would be at the
Archives and could do a lookup for me.
It would be very much appreciated.
